Steam service runs as Local System which does have some restrictions, while the client itself runs under my user account and would be subject to UAC if I had it turned on. I run my home systems for my convenience, so easy driver updates or all in one programs like http://www.ninite.com/ appeal to me. The places I contract to I never see Steam installed and haven't ever had to worry about it, except to want a better distribution network for my packages.;) - HEX
Same way it does on Windows, asks to install the updated driver and get elevated for that task. Personally I wasn't thinking of Linux, as I game (and mostly work) on Windows. - HEX
Since Steam now provides programs, including one that updates your drivers, why not release the major drivers on the platform directly? Take advantage of the Steam (torrent hybrid) distribution method and get auto updates. - HEX
I'm here too, and frankly I do better working from home (administering/migrating/packaging Windows servers/desktops no less) than I do in the local job market. Detroit/Michigan is some good press and a whole lot of nothing, especially thanks to the gutting of the film industry. Detroit automotive also won't listen to anyone NOT from Detroit, except maybe Germany, they completely ignore working with California and other tech folks. I'd leave the state but I've got family and friends here. - HEX
Off topic, but how does Puppet do with Windows clients, both server and workstations? Can it handle the standard packages I'd deploy via AD? I've been perusing their website but only see that Windows can be a client, not seeing the extent of it yet. Thx for any info in advance, I'm a rollout and installation pro from the Windows side of the data center and always looking for more config/app management skills. - HEX
I can recall some exciting work which involved placing an electric motor in each wheel hub and returning energy from braking, and having a small diesel engine running at a constant and tuned RPM topping off the system. Why not do this for a small compact car instead of messing with what would be a soap bubble compared to what much of the world deals with on it's roads. No way one of those would survive even the local roads around Detroit (and elsewhere of course), and highways are a necessary evil that these would never be allowed on. - HEX
You have a crash cart with a KVM (for the rare occasions you need to locally access two or more machines simultaneously) and that attaches to all the specialized cables for interfacing with your blades or full size servers, make sure it has a shelf for holding drives/ram/batteries and a bin for more specialized PS2/USB to Server convertors. Otherwise you sit at your desk and remote into EVERYTHING: VMs, Linux, Windows, iLO/etc. - HEX
Those are not excuses, they are statements of fact, just like his racist views are facts. A minor point, but it was a cultural racism, not a biological one, he was never concerned with "stock" as you put it. He married a Jew because she was "well assimilated" to the New England ideal. Personally I was glad to learn that he moved beyond his upbringing and experiences in New York/Brooklyn and moderated his views before his early death. There are plenty of other figures throughout history that did great things and never considered if their racist views were wrong, including if I'm not mistaken a few of the Founding Fathers. - HEX
HP Lovecraft was a product of his times, and he recanted these views before his death. He also married a Jewish woman, although at the time he did so he still had some strong feelings against immigrants. There are a few really good documentaries on him that go into this aspect of his life.
Also, he's a huge influence on my own work, the Maniac Loveseat series I do especially. - HEX
Slightly off topic, but the listing of capabilities and the "competition" aspect made me think of how the various robot fighting shows could use a reboot with obstacle course arena and fighting. - HEX
I don't think this will be a little heard whimper, instead it should get fairly big press coverage. The Chinese government starts playing games with rare earth prices putting almost all modern electronics prices at risk, we'll probably see huge graphs depicting possible iPad price increases, or even better pictures showing the size one would be if it used non-rare earth components. It will probably show up in the Presidential Race before elections as a talking point. - HEX
What struck me when I first heard that Windows RT will look like Windows 8 but won't run the same apps was that it'd be perfect for systems that traditionally run special purpose software on top of Windows. So as the title says, Kiosks, Point of Sale, and Control systems where they can trade on the fact that standard Windows vulnerabilities like viruses won't run on the ARM. - HEX
Since the drug companies won't create "children's doses" or other preparations of their profitable drugs this whole "compounding pharmacy" loophole with less FDA oversight blows up into infecting people with meningitis. We need these other preparations, often times they are lifesaving, but we need them with the same oversight given the manufacture of the original drugs. - HEX
So does this go the other way too? Are Romney supporters accidentally "Like"ing Obama's page? Or do they just not use smart phones as well as not using their smarts in general? - HEX
Sometimes I just want to write a longer piece on my desktop before moving to the web and see a WYSIWYG HTML view. Right now I stick to PSpad on the desktop, WordPress HTML mode (not WYSIWYG), and Google Docs depending on what I'm typing up. I feel I'm missing an editor on Windows that handles HTML/CSS and publishing (preferably to WordPress) better than PSpad. - HEX
exactly what I thought, reminds me of those "we'll all be swallowing Atomic Pills" and "flying" cars to work. Seriously, can we maybe get some actual sci-fi authors to weigh in? At least they extrapolate in an entertaining manner, this was like reading a newspaper insert from 1950. - HEX
A general response to both this post and the other reply: If I can't see a personal selection of apps/widgets/etc across my desktop multi-monitor setup without hitting a keyboard combo or mouse hotspot, then it's the UI that has failed, not my use of it. Why can I not have both interfaces visible at the same time and be able to treat the whole UI as s single entity? Also reference this interview "
Usability Expert: Windows 8 on PCs is Confusing, a Cognitive Burden" or the shorter synopsis here or here. For myself I'll be sticking to Win7 for the foreseeable future, and as a Windows admin I'm more interested in the newer Server versions than I am Win8's desktop, even though older windows and scripting is where I do most of my work. - HEX
I tried, I really did, to use Win8 on the desktop both without Start Menu replacement and with one. I absolutely could not stand what felt like an unnecessary extra step between switching back and forth. I don't care if it works on a small touch screen, it doesn't work on my desktop, get rid of the extra step AND give me a Start Menu. - HEX
Never trust the client.
Never put anything on the client. The client is in the hands of the enemy. Never ever ever forget this.
Seriously, how does Blizzard, with Warden watching the client PC, forget that the client and ANYTHING coming in from the outside internet is coming from a possible enemy. - HEX
I uploaded a video on September 9th of all original music by my best friend's band. I am still waiting for the "current" dispute process to complete. What disturbs me the most is that as someone who wants to create new, original content I can have the "best time" for my video to draw hits and thus the most monetization redirected away from the producer. I haven't bothered with searching the Copyright Center on this video since frankly it's friends/family watching it and not a huge monetary draw for anyone, but what if this happens with original content with a huge amount of hits? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnI1QZfbRjs

Another networking issue that is probably never going to go away, I'm just surprised it isn't used more maliciously than it is. - HEX
