Not that I'm knocking Blizzard for their quality in their games but the packaging can be a little more accurate.
Here are captures of the packaging for Starcraft. If you look closely, you'll notice some things that aren't possible in the game. Things like:
Siege Tanks shooting Protoss Carriers.
Goliaths using guns (instead of missiles) on an airborne target.
Scouts using missiles (instead of guns) on ground targets.
Arbiters don't cloak anything.
Now obviously, these are not at all like the game. They are probably Photoshop chop jobs made by marketing gurus who had no idea about the gameplay. Yeah Starcraft is a fantastic game, but could you at least make the packaging accurate?
I'm tired of all these MMORPG's where they pigeonhole you into being a humanoid character. I want a game where I can be a slime and get killed by a level 1 player 5 minutes in. I wanna be that bug that you kill 500 times to level up. I want to be able to survive as dragling until I'm a level 50 red dragon and then ravage the frickin' country side like Smaug out of Tolkien. I want a game where you can play as any char/creature you want. I don't just want to be the hero, I wanna be the level 70 badass boss that hordes of other characters group together to battle for some +100 sword of slashingness. If I feel like being good, I wanna be able to play as a demonic blob with a heart of gold. Where is a game like that?
I would have to say the console market is the best to play 2D shooters. My personal favorites are Radiant Silver Gun for Sega Saturn, Ikaruga for Dreamcast and Gamecube. 1945 Plus was awesome in the arcades. I'm not sure if it made it to console. Metal Storm for NES was great. Soon to be released Half-Life 2D looks like it will rock.
You know, on most Friday nights, I play Halo with 2 other married couples (me being a single guy). It's actually quite entertaining. If the significant others are on the same team, they come pretty close to having a divorce by the end of the night. My best friend's wife is crazy about DOAX V-ball as well. They always fight over the Xbox. She's also into puzzle games that you can find online. Needless to say, she's a gamer. But one can't help but wonder if she plays just to be closer to her husband.
I agree with you. Just look at Blizzard's Starcraft. It originally used the Warcraft 2 engine and the images were changed to represent space. It looked horrible. Then they pushed the release waaaaay back and came out with one of the best games for pc ever. I think a little delay will only help the final product in the end. Of course, there is no evidence that there is a delay, but just in case.
First off. Yes, we're trading old artifacts for new ones. Big woop. That's the way everything works. The next-gen cards will address this issue but more than likely, something else will cause a problem. This is how we progress.
In any case, I doubt it will detract from HL2 all that much. The artifact has always been there, it's just easier to notice now. Personnally, I don't run many games with alot anti-aliasing anyways because I feel that performance overrides graphics quality (mostly in multiplayer) when it comes to importance.
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology has required laptops for incoming freshmen since 1995 so I understand where you are coming from. I've sat through lectures where students played Quake, chatted on ICQ (with sounds enabled), and have actually visited porn sites (with sounds enabled). You would think that people would have the common courtesy to be discreet but there will always be someone who just doesn't care.
Of course, with reference to back-channeling a lecture, in all my programming classes, we had newsgroups set up. During class, we would post bits of code and discuss algorithms while the professor was lecturing. Most profs actually encouraged it. Personally, I think it's a great idea but only if the users stay on topic. It would have to be monitored/controlled by the lecturer so things don't get out of hand.
Then again, a nice bout of Quake always goes well during "College Life Skills" lectures.
Making Wizard Chess seems like it would be overkill. First of all, not many people are going to out of their way to pick it up as it is just chess with animations. If anything, it should become a minigame in the HP game.
Yeah, it will definitely suck in a few years when you want to play F-Zero for nostalgia but can't unlock everything because the arcade version is no longer available.
The idea does sound intriguing though. But if you ask me, I think your standard cabinet arcades are dead. It's cheaper and more fun to play on your favorite console at home. Now, notice I said cabinet style. If you to attract more people to the arcade, you have to make a setup that isn't feasible as a home option. Dance Dance Revolution is one idea. It has a large dance floor which is a million times better than the home pad version. Another idea is BattleTech and virtual reality. These setups are too costly for the average user but I've seen people readily hand over 5-10 bucks for 10-15 minutes of playtime.
Most of the arcades where I am from are dying or are dead. It's kind of sad really.
I really like Miyamoto, I think he's one of the greatest names in the gaming industry. I just hope he has enough insight and power to convince Nintendo to throw their hat into the online game arena.
There are alot of games on the NES that were great for co-op. If I had to wager, that's probably the best system for co-op, especially with the four-player adapter. In my dorm, we used to have 15-20 people in the lobby playing Super Spike V-Ball on a big screen tv with the Dreamcast and PS2 sitting off to the side gathering dust.
Some game suggestions... Contra, Super Spike V-Ball, Super Dodgeball, Blades of Steel, Skate or Die, various other sports games, Battletoads, Double Dragon series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Marble Madness, Super Off Road, 1942, Bomberman and Jeopardy.
Granted, some of the ones I mentioned are multi-player and not co-op but they are still fun nonetheless.
There's a lot of camels in Egypt...
Oh come on, everyone knows that CGNU is the best university.

I agree. Their implementation of bullet time is the best one out there. It's way better than Dead to Rights and Enter the Matrix.
He needs more stubble... All NY cops that are "world weary" need stubble.

It's all about the Mello Yellow rocket...
Days of Thunder 2: Stock Rocket Racing

I can see Acclaim all over this.
Ever go on a blind date and wonder if your partner didn't seem to be the person they say?
Have you ever tried to pick up a girl and only when you hit second base, you realized "Hey!?! You're a guy!!!!"
Ladies, ever pick that kind of butch guy with the squeaky voice, get him home only to find he ain't "packing the package"?
Or perhaps, you were surprised to realize "Bobbi" actually meant "Bobby" or "Vicky" was short for "Victor".
Well, ladies and gentlemen, worry no more! Our deluxe gender scanner can reveal those crossdressers in a matter of seconds.
Never be shocked again!
I can see all sorts of messages one can put on their body with reflective paint for all those scanner operators to see.

"The world is going to be flat going forward," said Mr Williams.
Ahhh... come on, they've been beating into my head that the world was round since elementary school, how do they expect me change my thinking now?!?!
Are you sure you bought it? Perhaps you just licensed it. Not that I don't agree with you.
