A better question would be: What is preventing millions upon millions of people from switching to a free OS? Quality would be my guess. I just installed Fedora Core 2 on a second hard drive and kept Windows on the first. Fedora tells me that it detects my sound card and then asks if I can hear the test sound. I can't so Fedora tells me "Sound won't be available on this system." End of story. Great OS guys. How is this any less frustrating than Windows? Not to mention that installing Fedora was next to impossible. Partition this, partition that. What a mess. Then I download Firefox to install that. I get the archive, open it; now what? There's nothing to click; no install file. Am I supposed to just know what to do next? Guess I'll be putting my MP3s back on that HD. Dumb. I'm seriously disappointed.

Huh? Since when do these three criteria determine if something is alive? As far as I remember from high school the criteria were: locomotion, respiration, ingestion, self-reproduction. Genetic traits and markers have nothing to do with life at all. Viruses are nothing but genetic material but they aren't alive. At any rate, Spam doesn't move on it's own, it doesn't breathe, it doesn't literally eat, and it doesn't spontaneously reproduce. They're just messages sent over a network . Let's get serious.

Listen, a document that focuses too much on form and thus takes away from its function is just as poorly designed as a document that focuses too much on function and ignores form. It's a balancing act. Either way you're left with a less than optimal document. What good is a usable page if no one wants to use it?
Ever google for an online store and reject the first couple of results because you didn't like the way they looked? They might be the most usable pages in the world with well designed shopping carts but if it doesn't have that look you expect from an online store you'll keep searching because you think it looks sketchy.
