Most people think that "Linux" is the name of an operating system.
And most people are right. The first line of linux.org reads: "Linux is a free Unix-type operating system."
The official said the research that Poindexter and his Total Information Awareness program (TIA) were conducting had become just too 'unorthodox'." Ya' think?
Since when is unorthodox automatically a bad thing? I thought Slashdotters were all about being unorthodox. I also think that a war on terrorism is well-suited to unorthodox strategies and tactics.
The English government may have switched to metric but its citizens have not. Same here in Canada. I weigh myself in pounds and measure myself in feet and inches. I'm currently in a graphic arts program and the first thing we had was a course in the Imperial System. I had to learn about inches, feet, ounces, pounds, and thousands of an inch. Why? Because the biggest and richest country on earth sells paper in inches, and ink in pounds. It doesn't matter that Canada uses metric and that I am a Canadian. I have to learn the American way or I can forget about making money.
2191.78 Years for the RIAA to Sue Everyone That means I'll stop using P2P in about...2191.78 years.
Assuming you'd be dead last in the RIAA's list. The point is they don't actually have to sue everyone before people get scared. Once they start suing people successfully people will begin to stop. Some users have already disabled uploading on Kazaa. Even the EFF is recommending that.
What the Museum does not look for in a donation:
It's difficult for us to turn people away when they have taken the time to contact us about a particular item. Sadly, we must do this when the item in question is something the Museum already has or has decided does not meet our criteria. Some of the items the Museum can no longer accept include:
IBM PC
IBM PC Jr
Commodore PET
Commodore 64
Commodore VIC-20
Apple II (+/c/e)
TI 99/4
Timex Sinclair
I'll second that. One of the original reasons I started coming to Slashdot was to learn more about Linux. I don't like using Windows and couldn't afford a Mac. I thought Linux would be the way to go but after reading Slashdot for awhile I've promised myself *never* to use Linux. You people are all insane. Take it easy. It's just an operating system. Luckily, however, I came up with a solution. Everytime a Slashdotter rants about "Micro$oft", or "Windoze" I put a quarter in a jar. I'll have that new G5 any day now.
It may be more than just 'inconvenient.' The RIAA produces 90% of all recorded music. People seem to think the RIAA represents the major labels only but that simply isn't true.
You can't have your cake and eat it too in this situation.
A common error. The only sensical ordering of this is "You can't eat your cake and have it too." Because, obviously, I can have my cake and eat it. But once I eat it I can no longer have it also.
Better yet, why wouldn't anyone-other than a geek-use IE? It's there, it works, it looks pretty, it's quick. Throw in the Google Toolbar 2.0 and you've got yourself the King of the Browsers. Speaking as someone on the outside looking in, I'd like to explain to/.'s that it's only you who think this way about a browser. It's only a browser. No one cares. If you told me your TV was a Magnetbox and I had a Sorny what difference does it make when you're sitting around the water cooler talking about the Simpsons? You both saw it, it was great. When I'm trading URLs I don't really care what you use to see it with as long as you see it. End of story.
AI hasn't moved forward an inch since the 40s but you'd never know it from what you read online or see in movies. The smartest computer around is no smarter than an ant and that's a fact. In short, I doubt this is the 'start of the attack.' Check out "What Computers Can't Do" and "What Computers Still Can't Do." Two great books on how AI has failed.
But when Graphic Design is your business $1000 is not a big investment. It's a tool that you have to buy. A mechanic's tools are worth thousands. I like Quark. Quark works. It's a great product. Funnily enough, I've never needed the source code either. But again, that's for someone who is called on to produce documents. Someone who just wants to mess around doesn't need or want Quark anyway. And free=affordable only if your time has no value.
I just can't get upset at the idea that the government may see what I checked out at the library. I don't care if they know that I like to read WWII history books and old computer magazines. The only people that would be upset over this are people checking out bomb making books and I don't think libraries stock those anyhow. So how's about everyone just calm down?
In general there is reasonably good agreement. In a recent test the QuesTec system judged that 32.1 percent of pitches were within the "strike zone", while the umpire called 31.4 percent as strikes.
What this says to me is that the human is doing a fine job and the computer is not needed here.
A mechanical device that can manage and acquire targets? Run the Nav system? Run Communications? I'd like to see that.

Either that, or just make a loud clicking noise.

Check out his Lego machines then.

WTF are you talking about? Do you even know what the RIAA is? Maybe you should check this page to see who makes up the RIAA. It's not just the majors.

Read it again. You don't need to own a Windows box. You only need access to one. What's the problem?

Last time I checked, when you buy something it's yours. This is getting stupid.
When was the last time you checked?
Not if the file is a dummy.

Toilet paper is designed to be thrown away because it's main purpose is to clean you and then be thrown away
So what you're saying is "Toilet paper is designed to be thrown away...because it's designed to be thrown away." Brilliant.

This is Communism.
This would make sense because I believe it plays DVDs too. So it must be able to spin both ways.
God.
