If you want to see dot.com Bust 2.0, this will contribute to it. Do you remember the dot.com era? Most of those people with no technical or coding background who tried to learn how to code in 1 year (or less) and obtained some flea-bag certificate were the first ones to be let go. And yes, there were a lot of them. Without having the fundamentals of data structures, coding style, documentation skills, and good logic and problem solving skills, those new "coders" will have a very short career, if any. Most companies learned their lesson from dot.com 1.0.

How in the heck can a religion do this? It seems to contradict everything Jesus stood for: Peace, love, and helping people, not killing countless millions and building an empire in the name of God. What a bunch of hypocrites! It wouldn't surprise me that the Vatican will try and copyright (trademark, too) the name Vatican or even Jesus Christ one of these days.

Even when I don't exercise, my metabolism is so fast that I can eat the crappiest foods for a week and not gain a pound. I have to say that I'm blessed to have a fast metabolism.

I do agree, however, that the number of healthy foods in regular grocery stores have diminished drastically over the last couple of years (at least in the Chicago area). I have to go to Whole Foods for the good stuff (and pay through the nose).

Air, train and road travel is practically eliminated.

Second, the food replicator needs to be invented, which, again, is from Star Trek. Famine would be wiped out for good.

  12. Bad, bad, bad idea!! on A Proposal For Unionizing Bloggers · · Score: 2, Insightful

Unions are the cause of a lot problems in the U.S. In Illinois, you are required to join a union if your job function is unionized. They're huge bureaucratic entities that are corrupt, they waste time, and they especially waste money. I've been in a union (UFCW), and it sucked. Unions are always talking about striking while at the same time take a large chunk of money out one's paycheck. These "union dues" or extortion fees would never, ever be seen again. And the biggest problem with unions is that it is very difficult to get rid of a crappy worker.

I'll be damned if I have to be forced to join a union because I write blogs. Unions were needed at the beginning of the 20th century because there were no laws to protect the worker. Today, there are laws in force that do protect the worker. Additional laws for bloggers would not be that tough to do. Plus, there wouldn't be any extortion fees to pay.

Even if SCO loses for good, there is Novell. While it's great that Novell will get the rights to Unix, in the meantime, Microsoft has a vested interest with the company. There may be a day when Microsoft will just buy out/absorb Novell, and MS will own the Unix rights. And MS being a company with really deep pockets and ever more resources, may actually pull off lawsuits ala RIAA against any Unix/Linux user. MS funded SCO indirectly to "help" with the lawsuit. It seems that MS knew SCO was going to lose. Thus, a partnership with Novell with a sweet deal it could not refuse was made. MS does not lose here. MS wins either way. I don't believe this is over by a long shot.

  14. End of the Little Ice Age? on The Heretical Freeman Dyson · · Score: 1

I don't believe in all of this global warming stuff. I have heard both sides of the story and have concluded that no one knows anything, especially the non-scientific community who tend to be ignorant and don't do any research themselves. If anyone remembers the late 70's, scientists were predicting that an ice-age was going to happen within 20 - 50 years. Well, it's been more than 20 years and nothing has happened. According to this wikipedia article, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Ice_Age, we could be at the end of the little ice age.

One other thing to note is that we don't have any accurate weather data going back thousands of years. Everything is hear-say and pure speculation before the 19th century. So, how can we make any conclusions about our future climate if there isn't any hard evidence to go by? We can only speculate as to what is going to happen in the future based on data that is too "new" (within the last 2,000+ years as opposed to the last 1,000,000 years). I guess we can look at sediment and arctic ice layers, but again, most of the evidence are speculations.

  16. Re:Companies use salary to circumvent labor laws on Takin' Care of Business and Working Paid Overtime · · Score: 1

I work for a company who's main motto is something like this: Put customers first. Thus, if anything goes wrong with the software/hardware system in which customers are directly affected, it is our responsibility to find the cause, fix it, and ensure any customers affected are properly compensated. In the end, if working 60 - 80 hours per week is required, we do it.

Sure it sucks, but the only choice that we have is to quit. But, even though we have to work a lot of extra hours, very few complain in my IT department because the perks we get are actually pretty good: compensation days, free breakfast/lunch/dinner, stock options, 100% tuition reimbursement and bonuses. In other words, my company takes care of us.

I'm not sure what companies you've worked for, but you would have been fired on the spot in my company, even if you were a programmer-extraordinaire. The main reason being that you didn't fit the company's model. No lawsuit would've helped you because our code of conduct handbook would've been used in the court system because of one line: 'you failed to put customers first'.

On a similar note, to consistently work 60 - 80 hours per week every week is a problem and a trend I'm seeing in corporate America. Corporations are running lean IT departments in which IT individuals have to wear several different hats for several different roles: programmer, project manager, business liaison, etc. These companies aren't hiring anyone either. Though most companies aren't like my company, I can see why these class action lawsuits are popping up. But, in the end, class action lawsuits will ultimately hurt the IT individual because now companies can get rid of their IT departments and outsource them citing cost overruns.

So, if you add it all up, that's about $34 (2 tix, 2 pops, and 2 popcorn bags)! I'll wait for the DVD.

The majority of movies also suck nowadays. There's no imagination. They are either remakes or based on some comic book (although Spiderman II was pretty good). Why remake movies? Do the producers/writers think they can make it better than the original? Prime examples of crap remakes: Pink Panther, War of the Worlds, Shaft, Starsky and Hutch, Dukes of Hazzard. The only movie I would like to see remade is Plan 9 from Outer Space. It wasn't voted "worse movie ever" for nothing.
