I thought the gubmint got all the power it needed from those alien black hole gravitational generators they have stashed under area 51? You know, the ones that power their secret time-space bending stealth saucers to the secret moonbase where not-dead JFK rules the earth.

You are being sold a bill of goods. When your 'employer' sends you to West Gopher where the median salary is $10/hr you better be prepared to spend the rest of your life there because any other employer is never going to give you a 100% raise to come work in a place with sidewalks and mass transit. Assuming of course you actually get sick of doing fun things like cow tipping and hanging at the DQ.
This is a typical Forbes "Isn't it great to find a place that pays third world wages in the US!!!" column.
I'm sick of surveys like this that purport to rationalize why we should all be happy to move to west bumfuck for $9/hr. We DON'T WANT to LIVE there. Instead of sending all the jobs to Bangalore why don't tech firms pay people a good enough wage so that they can live somewhere urban or at least at the median cost of living in the US?
What next? A column from Forbes telling us how great it is for IT workers to live in Mexico?
You can make it say whatever you and a sufficiently large enough motivated group of your friends want it to say. Oh it's wonderful if you want to learn about Mole's Law or the lifecycle of apples. Things that are scientific facts (like evolution wink wink) but that's it. For anything vaguely related to current events history politics religion and so on Wiki is pure crap.
Yes a legit OEM CD (from Dell) relicenced entirely correctly from a well known vendor, eDirectsoftware.com. I have the CD and an original OEM hologram.
Everything else on the planet requires you to register and logon. But MS in it's infinite wisdom decided that making it 'transparent' would be better. And in the real world this translates to making it more error prone, fragile, complicated and generally unsupportable.
HEY MICROSOFT: IF LOGONS ARE GOOD ENOUGH FOR MY THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS RELATIONSHIP WITH AMAZON THEN IT'S GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOUR $79 OPERATING SYSTEM, YOU FUCKING RETARDS !!!!!!!!
I've never seen a U-Scan run anything higher than older versions of NT, some run 9.x. Fat freakin chance trying to upgrade them let alone trying to take them out of service in a supermarket to upgrade them. I think that if CUSTOMERS just raised enough hell with Microsoft and told them what to do they'd have to buckle eventually. But going back 20 years we've all believed the "It's really just a cheap shitty desktop" hype and gone along with every piece of shit 'improvement' they've ever tried to jam on us. If we want to run 9.x and then let's do that. I do. I run several machines at home that use 9.x because I JUST DON'T WANT GO OUT AND BUY ALL NEW SCANNERS, DIGITIZERS AND SCSI ADAPTERS BECAUSE THEY'RE BOUND TO THE OS RIGHT NOW.
Ditto patches. I think someone needs to evaluate concretely the value of patching every last crappy fix they shovel on us versus the downtime risk of the exposure. If we spend an hour a week fixing their shit is that better or worse than the potential risk based downtime of not fixing anything.
Otherwise there's no rational excuse to get a new machine. What do they actually do more or new than last year's model? Nothing Last year's PC do as much as this years and this years machines are all first time sales not replacements. Such as kids going off to college, etc. But if Microsoft would just build shittier software, ever more bloated, slow and crashtastic then we'll surely have to go out and buy all new hardware.
Then build better antimalware tools. It's simple. I have a bunch of machines under my 'domain' and no matter how much you tell people what to do they don't. So don't make people download updates, don't make people run the scanners, don't make people decide whether to run the realtime portion and don't ask them to interpret a warning message when it finds something. Or just go back and build a better OS and browser like I said.
I can hardly wait till Microsoft takes over the desktop security space. Because that of course will fix everything.
ABC is a bunch of pikers compare to this lot. I've stopped watching the first two completely. The last 45 minutes of any movie is more than 50% advertising breaks with at least 2 breaks in the last 15 minutes alone. And while History Channel (and TLC and Discovery) don't have as LOOOOOOOONG breaks they have more of them. Every 3-4-5 minutes on average.
Because let's face facts that what it will be. Or more properly, a WindowsXP media edtion pocket PC that needs 1GB of RAM, an 80GB drive, 20GB of which will be the operating system? Is this really device you want?
While it's true that Macs have a better design, are easier to use, are safer and more resilient I suspect that once they become, if they become a larger segment of the market we'll see hundreds of security software companies crop up to fix marginal or non existent problems. We'll see real time spyware scanners and a bunch of new malware programs and endless churn of patches to fix things just because there is a 0.05% chance of it meaning anything. And then the experts will pile on chattering about all the things you should tweak and manage because COMPUTERS ARE DANGEROUS AND NONPRIESTS MUST BE TOLD HOW SCARY THEY ARE.
Color me cynical but I think a big part of the actual problem is the security software companies themselves. Not that they lie or that they create holes we need to fix but the perception that unless and until we manage 100% of everything in our systems realtime, heads down, apply every last patch that we're somehow going to skid off the infohighway into the pit of hell.
I've applied every last patch to WinXP ever told to me. And I can't say as there is any demonstrable benefit to doing so or that I'm better off other than thinking I'm better off. Maybe we need to rein in the security companies and tell them that quarterly or semiannual bulletins for 99% of the 'problems' is a better way to help us. Otherwise people are largely fixing nonbroken things and thinking it's accomplishing something.
Minefields are 2-layered. One for personnel and one for equipment. In other words the antipersonnel mines are used to protect the equipment mines. With robotic moving mines you no longer need an antipersonal layer. In fact you can move the mines around without a breach - just randomize them once in a while.
If anything cell phone drivers drive slower. Much slower. If you want to find someone AS AN ENTIRE CLASS YOU CAN LEGALLY HATE, then let's go after the soccermoms in their 6000lb land arks who will literally T-Bone you rather than yield - because hey! They're special as shit and they have places to go. Why don't we go after EVERY SINGLE WHITE BUICK which is driven by some fucking fossil who can't get out of his own damn way. And while we're at it let's go after all the black women between the ages of 21-38 driving Nissans or Hondas because they clearly are the most aggressive drivers on the road. Hey bitch - are you TRYING to park your car in my ashtray???
Or is the school, typically, pulling a policy out of its ass according to its whim? Because otherwise they're assuming a level of responsibility and maturity tantamount to being an adult which clearly a 15 year old is not. For instance schools ban gang signs because we pretty much know what "I'm gonna blast you" looks like. We ban banners that say things we ban all sorts of things. So its not as if the school is unable to make a particular case ahead of time on this issue. Otherwise they're going to hide behind the stupid argument of "Golly geewilligers! We didn't know these young whippersnappers could do that with their new fangled com-poot-ers and rock music!!!!!"
So again, unless the ninnynanner school which seemingly has a policy for everything and everything is covered by a policy - I'd have to let the kid go with a warning and leave it at that. After all, they assert in loco parentis. Isn't that would a parent would do?
Every confrontation is with some fucking jarhead who's pissed off he didn't wax an Iraqi on his last tour and you sure as shit are going to pay for that. The only thing about this that amazed me is that it didn't happen in Raleigh North Fucking Carolina. Check it out - this week we sentenced a woman to 200 hrs community service for killing a handicapped old lady in an argument at the check out line. But if the cops pull you over in your car and they determine you're 'resisting arrest' you're looking at anywhere from 3 to 5 different G or H class felonies. I think you should be able to get one good taser shot off at them - for free.
C'mon at least make up a better bullshit story than "It's for your own good". You guys are parking on WiFi LANs so that you can claim you're looking for

Millions of little Malaysian children chained to their PC's hammering out PHP code for pennies a day.
Wow -1 somebody's got the Mondays.
It's a great machine and Lenonvo is affordable and the time to ship was 1 week.

The Lenovo N100s (notebooks) have some mods that come in at $900; dual core, 1GB RAM, CDDVD. 15.4" screen. They come in around $900 give or take.
