Look we can see the horrible difficulties that they have in rolling out a.5 release of Windows, which is more or less what Vista will be. And we're lead to believe that the way out is to start over, completely from scratch? This is magical thinking. They seem to believe that the problems inherent in Windows are so complex and so overwhelming at this point the only way to fix them is to abandon the whole thing.
Now let's review: MS still owns 90% of the desktop. So they still are slaves to their own success. Unless they can find another 500 million users out there who don't have MS desktops today......No clearly they'll have to drag them along. And guess what? They're part of the problem in the first place. What will MS do to support them other than bringing all their legacy problems into this Bright and Shining City on the Hill?
I can only suggest that they call the smart people at IBM and get them to create a new VM/ESA or z/OS that runs on the desktop and supports the Vista Aero UI and all of the apps. In other words finally create an operating system that handles the operation of the system and not everything instead of that.
In the thirty years I've been involved in IT I have to guess that we're approaching the point where hero-god-gurus don't matter much at all. Hasn't the industry matured to the point of being boring yet? When are we going to get past eccentric non repeatable brilliance and to the point of dull efficient execution?
Seriously the real danger is driving in thunderstorm while talking on your phone while simultaneously logging on to MySpace as illegal immigrants are slaughtering avian flu infected Pit Bulls to buy crack to fund their gang activities in the kiddie porn and terrorism industry.
The very Christian fundamentalists who violently oppose biomedical research are ensuring the Darwinian survival of the fittest they themselves deny exists.
They should publish clearly that anyone who does not purchase x$ of goods in a period Y will be prosecuted. They should also publish that anyone sitting in their coffee shop must purchase x$ of of goods in a period Y or they will be arrested and prosecuted as well. They also need to monitor how many napkins and straws people use as well as the quantities of milk. If you go over your allotment you will be arrested. I mean fair is fair, isn't it?
Actually it's the comments I sent to them more or less for their last stockholders meeting. See unlike/. nerdorama - MS is a real life corporation with accountability. And you can whine and you can moan that no one take you seriously because your 12th Best C++ programmer in Tulsa or whatever but first and foremost MS is a public corporation with a responsibility to shareholders. And we are sick and tired of Bill Gates wandering the world to innoculate children while he still held the reins at the home office.
Because it seems to be a suit that Myspace has men who are older than they say they are, not that they are predators and such. Here's a tip guys - if you just rape women your own age, according to the Houston soccermom league is fine.
Because honestly, my stock can't take any more do-gooderism. I think it's wonderful that MS is a bunch of guys who like George Bush, you might think is a dolt but you'd sure like to have a beer with. Yeah that's like cool and shit but first:
a) get any product out the door in less than 2 years past its due date b) get any product out the door that people are impressed by c) try to at least think about security architecture d) think of your customers instead of just fortress Microsoft e) create anything that doesn't give us all the creeps that you're just sucking dollars and rights out of us
Then yeah, we can all nerd out in the AV squad room.
Dear lord why are they making shit programs like this. Do you actually know someone who wants to use their computer to videochat at the same time they're talking to someone and IMing a third while downloading something? These IM clients have morphed into horribly bloated slow, cranky fragile pieces of junk. Just what we need - an MS lab project that they magically took the 'beta' tag off even though its the same junk as last week - to compete in the same space as all the other junk.
And of course it will be lashed into WGA and have about 3 million vulnerabilities that never finish getting patched. OK I'm getting closer to a wholesale Mac swap everyday.
"This blatant unethical borderline criminal behavior makes me sick. A) it's wrong and B) the fucking stock hasn't moved an inch since 1998. Who the hell do they think they're kidding anymore??"
Excuse me flack, how is this paranoid or 'kookie'? Tell Ballmer I said hey.
Seriously - I am a MS stockholder and I'm voicing my disgust yet the MS planted flacks here at/. are calling me a 'troll'. Well that pretty much makes my argument for me. And trust me MS'rs I won't be holding MS any longer nor buying your products. Have a nice day.
Mundie can say whatever he wants. Every single MS product is moving in the opposite direction of OSS. More specialized, more certified, more closed. And they're on the cusp of controlling the development of PC firmware outright.
This blatant unethical borderline criminal behavior makes me sick. A) it's wrong and B) the fucking stock hasn't moved an inch since 1998. Who the hell do they think they're kidding anymore?? Is this their new business model? Bribery and intimidation? Because it's not working.
Balmer might as well have said "You will no longer be able to BUY a PC - you will only be able to rent from your Local Microsoft (tm) outlet. We just take your credit card number and easily meter your usage."
This is nuts - every review I've seen says Vista is 80% new looks 17% DRM and 3% improved features. I'm not going to pay this tax I'm just going to get a nice desktop Linux or a miniMac.
Ballmer, yet another Bill Gates crony billionaire thinks that just sitting on his fat ass waiting for Google to wither up and die is the best strategy for Microsoft. But it won't work because Google is actually doing things that MS can't or won't or doesn't want to.
And the best thing they can come up with in Redmond is to create a turn of the Operating System crank with an unquenchable lust for hardware which will make everyone go out and buy a new PC, which will need OS and upgrades which will need a new PC and so.
Ballmer must go! Ballmer must go! My stock is where it was in 1998 god damnit.
Those 400psi water chillers on IBM TCM (Themo-Conduction-Module) mainframes did an awesome job of keeping them cool. I'm sure some research into it could yield smaller cheaper units with better thermal conductivity - perhaps some new fluid that's non electrical conducting and better heat characteristics.
MS stock has languished since 1998 Gates has been asleed at the wheel There have been no new products Everything is slipping even by MS's squishy standards No one believes what they say anymore when they talk about their priorities
It's all well and good for Gates to give away his money but I am damned sick of him giving away MINE.
Curiously this is not an unknown problem. MS is aware of it at any rate - machines that for whatever reason CANNOT successfully install WGA and therefore are screwed out of all subsequent updates. Did I mention these are fresh installs? These are machines that were scratch rebuilt mere weeks ago and are completely clean of spyware, virii and have relatively few applications installed? Did I mention that MS has ZERO response to this? No answer at all whatsoever. I have asked if there is a way to download and install WGA on its own.
I suspect they are silent on that point because there's a flaw in WGA which would verfiy any machine you managed to intall it on.
Sam Palmisano, CEO, Chairman and Chief Poobah of IBM recently went to India and announced with the President of India, they're pouring $6 billion US into the country there and that IBM India would soon have more employees than every other country including the US. Now it's #2 after the US. You can also expect to see stockholder's meetings there to emphasize the importance of India and the Asian markets.
Everything is cheaper in India. Then build out sufficient bandwidth to connect everything here to there. See it's not just about pesky American wages - it's also about pesky American real estate prices, utility costs and whatnot.
Grind out a really shitty product, then charge everyone for upgrades, particularly the made-up security upgrades that seemingly fix imaginary holes.

That's what at the heart of this. All those MPAA/RIAA bastards want deep bandwidth disounts or they will continue to sue everyone in creation
