MS is actually a very conservative company they will pick a long time insider. It shouldn't amaze anyone if they pick someone with an accounting or legal background. 16. Because they don't care on Why Does Windows Have Terrible Battery Life? · · Score: 1

It's not priority with them. First off any system that purports to do all things for all mankind on all platforms is going to have an enormous amount of inherent bloat and carry alongs because it's too hard not to write highly generic high level abstractions and interfaces at every step of the intrasystem process scheme.

Secondly, Windows has never been designed as a mobile or portable system. It's a bolt on like nearly everything else. Hell, networking is a bolt on it's not built in. So mobility is yet another extension that sort of jams itself here and there into the rest of the system. It's essentially running a desktop system with a bunch of frills on top of it that run mobile but underneath it's the same old same old leviathan.

Third - MS has always relied on the power of hardware over efficiency. Wintel is more than a term, it's a dysfunctional marriage. MS has always jammed as many features together with the expectation that Intel would paper it all over with bigger faster hotter CPU's. MS systems run junk in the background because their CPU's allow them to.

Fourth - they're just not all that interested in your demands. They're interested in their demands. Battery life isn't anything they care about.

  17. Re:The New New York is Screw York on New York City Considers Articulated Subway Cars · · Score: 1

They've been 'building' the 2nd ave subway since 1962. 1957 really if you look at the original plans. It's like the flyover of 495 into the midtown tunnel which has been under 'construction and repairs' since 1966 and all they've managed to do so far is deploy road cones.

I guess no one remembers the debacle of the replacement IRT trains in the early 1980's when they contracted it to a Japanese firm and DAY ONE they discovered that Japanese seats are too narrow for big fat American asses and they were taken out of service for 2 years to replace the seats.

I guess no one remembers the Great 7 Train Improvement project which took the express line out of service for 7 years.

I guess no one remembers the articulated bus experiment where all these European articulated buses were bought to 'improve' things and within a year the few that hadn't completely broken down were taken out of service because it was too expensive to maintain them.

I guess no one remembers that IND and IRT trains are fundamentally different because IRT trains run in tunnels that are too narrow for cars in the rest of the system. This is why everything has to be done in parallel, duplicated.

Each turn of the crank of Word is a new and different product. The migration from Word 2003 to 2007 to 2010 and beyond is as steep as moving from Word to OpenOffice. It's boringly predictable that when discussing the manipulation of a document over the phone where each person has a slightly different version of Word (that is, no on screen document sharing) it's pointless because so many of the controls and how those controls operate are different. But hey at least it's not Excel which is even worse.
