As an experiment pick a dozen living writers, email them and ask them if the publisher, as opposed to the writer, owns the rights to their work. I'd be amazed if every single one of them didn't say "hell yes".
Tom Steinert-Threlkeld has a great rundown of the numbers behind this weekend's Olympic coverage. The highest day of coverage was on August 10th and it saw about 3.42 million video streams with 66.7 million page views and an average time spent on the site of 15 minutes. Pretty good numbers but as the BTL piece notes, that's only about 2% of a typical YouTube day. So it didn't exactly take the world by storm.
I for one am shocked by such behavior from such benevolent corporations - they always act in the public interest!
In light of such an insightful post I would just like to point out that John McCain has a comprehensive economic plan that will create millions of good American jobs, ensure our nation's energy security, get the government's budget and spending practices in order, and bring relief to American consumers.
1. Lose the damn copy protection.
2. Use Steam or develop a system where people aren't chained to a CD or Jewel case with a cryptic serial number on it.
3. Release honest demos.
4. Don't get bought by EA, they have no honor.
The article addresses all of these issues.
My only complaint is that most of the games released by this developer are very derivative. Games list.
I tried the end of the world demo on Steam and it is just Katamari and the rest look to be clones of other games.
That's true, but global warming isn't about cleaner air. Global warming is the y2k of this decade.
So you are saying it is a very real problem (those extra digits didn't appear by magic) that with proper warning, foresight, and pre-emptive action can be mitigated such that it causes fewer problems. Well then, I must say I agree.
These guys are literally restricting free speech, as in "don't say that out loud." This will work as a way better example of US censorship than my usual 2600 DECSS example. Thanks MA for the forthcoming karma in other censorship articles.
Not even Apple users have the same problem. Users of other OS have been conditioned to get their software from a place they can trust. Free software users have learned not to trust non free software like Flash itself.
So where do Apple users get their Flash updates from then?
It stands to reason that such a talentless and disposable band would stoop to such dishonesty. Show the band how you support such underhanded tactics by making sure that you never buy any of their albums (not that you would anyhow).
Don't download it either, sucks when people don't even want your stuff for free!
I think you miss the point with #4. There is no revenue in recorded music anymore. I know I'm not buying any, and nobody I know is buying any. Anyone that knows how to is downloading it for free. Some folks think they are clever by saying they will eventually buy something when it is the right price and right quality. In the meantime, they are downloading as well and not paying.
Let me get this straight. Diebold fixes the election, and all you Americans do is point at them and whine a bit, then Comcast takes away your pron and all of a sudden you're willing to fight to the death?
Without the internet how many people would even know about Diebold?
You can copyright a game. I remember a few years ago, Hasbro sued Kellogg for having a card matching game on their cereal boxes as part of a Finding Nemo promotion, saying it too closely resembled their Memory card game. Wizards of the Coast even has a patent for "games, published in the form of trading cards...
No, you can't copyright a game. The Kelloggs thing was a trademark claim which was settled out of court so who knows how that would have went. Your other example is a patent issue. I guess it needs to be repeated, once more, that patents, trademarks and copyright are all different things.

The story is tagged Democrats yet the bill's sponsor is a Rebuplican.
Bill sponsor Sen. Andrew Lanza (R) countered with:
This [law] does not prohibit the sale of video games based on... content. This simply requires a labeling. And at the end of the day if a game is rated mature, or violent, this does not preclude or prohibit someone from selling it to a minor. I wish we could do that, but the First Amendment, I believe, protects against that.
No way a panel will last 16-18 years.. Try 2-3. You've got to factor in the price of complete replacecement. Hell, lets say he gets really lucky and they last 10 years.. he's still making a net loss.
From the Article:
These particular panels were guaranteed to deliver 90% of their rated peak capacity for at the twelve year mark, and 80% at the 25 year mark.
The payback time, assuming energy costs don't spike steeply, is a little under nine years. If we sell the house, we should get it all back immediately.
When the military agrees, the idea that we should not try diplomacy seems odd.
"This is a very unstable part of the world, and I don't need it to be more unstable," said the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Michael Mullen.
He added pointedly, "we haven't had much of a dialogue with the Iranians for a long time,"
Solar power sounds great and is very trendy. Why evaluate the possible consequences for our actions when we can plow ahead blindly? Going ahead with energy policy without considering the environmental effects has worked well for us so far!
How dare they approve zero projects before the study is complete!
If you're running a business, your first worry should be about servicing your customers not using Bittorent. Get another DSL/Cable/Wifi connection for your business and run your VOIP over that.
Excellent suggestion! Instead of a one-time cost of $50 for a gadget to salve the problem the submitter can pay $50 every month! That ought to stimulate the economy!

No. Other way 'round. These days, if you do profess membership in some faith, you're a cold-hearted bastard.
Well, 53% of Americans would not vote for an atheist for president regardless of qualifications.

At first I thought this was a rebuttal but maybe American's want a cold hearted bastard for president.

Tell that to MC Hawking.

Without all that pesky "due process" Media Sentry would have a perfect track record!

Apple Apparently Turned $570 Million Profit from ITunes Last Year
Quote: "So when revenue is brought back to the States, Billboard estimates iTunes' music download revenue at $1.9 billion last year"
That must be 1.9 billion imaginary dollars.

Heh, the first acronym in the list of 20 is POS. Supposedly meaning "Parents over shoulder."
Don't tell anyone it actually means "Piece of Shit." NC is running out of possible 3 letter combinations!
