Would you care to explain how a gun is used for DETERRENCE?
Pretty simple really, but I'll use small words.
If you know that I have a gun, you're less likely to do something that may end up in getting you shot.
For example, If you were a criminal type and wanted to rob a house would you be more likely to enter house A or B?
House A: Peace loving hippy mobile parked out front (tie died seat covers, stickers that say "make love, not war", etc)
House B: Has a sign in the window "This property protected by Smith and Wesson" and a gun rack in the back window of the pickup?
I know most bad guy types would more than likely hit house A, becuase the odds of getting their nuts blown off with a.357 are much lower in that house (at least the first time). Hense, they have been deterred from robbing the house B.
A 30/30 isnt going to do jack to a Bradley, or an Abrahms.
Nope, won't even annoy those inside of it. However, it will work wonders agiast the crew of one if you're smart enough to catch them slacking. And what do you call a tank with no crew? That's right - you call it "yours".
IIRC, the oath you took didn't have an experation date on it did it? Funny, mine didn't either. Is it "uphold the constitution" or "defend the constitution" - I might have to do a memory check on that one.
Because of people like you, *MY* children will grow up in a free nation and for that you have my thanks.
IIRC, those were for speeding violations on base only when I was in from 93-97, with 94-97 being at Ft. Lewis, WA.93-94 were done in Germany so we won't talk about speeding over there... Off post speeding was never an issue in WA. Of course, I never got caught speeding so I don't have first hand knowldge of this.
In my opinion, if you want safe drivers, make the act as unsafe as possible to start with. Remove seat belts, air bags and anti-lock brakes. Also, line the dash, stearing wheel and back of the front seats with 8 inch steel spikes and I'd honestly be suprised if you see people going even the speed limit in most places and will stop with PLENTY of room. No need for a black box if everyone driving has a brown seat.
From time to time, I'll buy a bunch of X-10 stuff from a vendor of mine in TX. Strangly engough, he refused to sell me one of those camera sets because he liked having my business.
The stuff is child's play to set up, and hard as hell to troubleshoot if you've got problems. I've been using X10 based items for 5 years now, and still several times a week, the computer will pick up line noise as a command and all sorts of funky stuff happens (wall switch units seem to be the worst offenders).
Happy to answer any X10 protocall questions anyone here might have - but truly I am a novice.
I've had that idea in the back of my head now for a couple of years. Inset the computer into the desk top with a nice plexiglass cover on it. Pop up CD/DVD drives. Figure I can get twice the computers in the same area as one takes up - in my future dream home the rec room will have a set up like this for gaming - with maybe 8-10 setups along the walls.
Of course, all this starts with being able to afford replacement boxen with Mini-ITX (or the like) and the time to do it all, looks like it's time to buy a lotto ticket. If you get you're done before I win the lotto, send photos!
In my experience XP networking can be as easy as just plugging in the cable and running the wizard.
There is a wizard for networking in XP? Never heard of such a thing on XP, but then again, we all get used to doing something on way and that's the way we do it. I come from a Unix background, so windows networking seems to be about plug and play as anything I've seen. Now... getting the linux box to talk to the roommmates Mac and the other windows machines in the house, that was a bit of a challange.
Interestingly enough, When I put the 802.11b card in my XP notebook and booted it up for the first time, it came right online wiht no configuration needed and I was able to see the internet with no problems. Then of course, I had to take it off the neighbors WAP and configure it for my own since I don't broadcast my SSID (like they do).
2. Clearly the penalty for copyright infringement is far to severe.
Since Itunes has set the value of a digitial copy of a song at $0.99 I think it would be fair and reasonable to fine anyone caught $0.99/song for any music they copied outside of their fair use rights, and only if it's a perfect copy.
starting a produtionrun of them to use on all the PCs at your workplace.
Acutally, that's not a bad idea. One weekend, install all the locks then be the only supplier for the keys. Sure, you'd get canned, but depending on how many PCs your company has, could be a nice little severance package.
On a slightly more realistic note... DIY stuff like this is one of the reasons I have so much fun at work sometimes. My boss and I go out, find problems and then find solutions to fix them. We've gotten to play with everything from 802.11b on PDA with our own software, Ethernet based relays, Xports, Ibuttons and we each have our own keys to the mill in the machine shop. Next years budget includes device tracking with RFID and fingerprint scanners for checking in.
no offense, but that is the kind of geek behavior that scares people away from geeks, rather than accepting them. most "geek-phobia" comes from geeks being ultraelitist and scoff at regular users who just don't understand and know better.
You say that like it's a bad thing. I think a healthy dose of fear of geeks can be exactly that - healthy. It keeps me from having to pull out the cattle prod and KY Jelly to get my point across.
Yes. Every SCA event I go to with belly dancers and drummers. Both are usually incompetent, and won't stop
Really? It's been many a year since I've played with the local SCA group, but I remember the dummers were top notch and images of the dancers still haunt my most pleasant day dreams to this day.
Memories like that make me want to pull my garb out of mothballs and see when the next event is.
and here all this time I thought this was a reference to Highlander... after all "There can be only one".::shrugs:: You've got your reality, and the rest of us have ours.
Man, you live in a cool County - I might just move there. Do the spend the $5.02 they collect on porn the library or something? That's really sweet....
Intereseting. I'll put the 20+ years of clinical research that Atkins and Spears have done against the studies you speak of in your comment.
There are some errors in your thinking and your facts. The Atkins diet does NOT remove ALL carbs from your diet. It suggests that you keep the below 35g per day. Protein and some fat will NOT raise your cholesterol to astronomical levels as you put it. In fact, research and clinical studies have shown that the Atkins diet can in fact be used to PREVENT high Cholesterol.
Having been on the Atkins diet, I found that I was able to replace my fat stores (good thing when they go away) with muscle mass, not loosing it.
Might be a good idea to do a little bit of real research before you buy the FUD on the net. The average American consumes the equiv of 1 cup of pure sugar in carbs a day and it's this excess intake of carbs that is not healthy for you. You never want to completely remove a food group from your diet, that's just plane silly.
when it comes to what I do in the privacy of my own home, I should be able to do whatever I want as long as it doesn't harm anyone else.
Depends on how you define "doesn't harm anyone else". I feel (and I'm probably wrong) that if you do something in your home that either directly effects me or will eventually effect me, I should have a right to say yes or no or at least to know about it.
For example - You smoke one joint in your house. I never see it, hear about it and it never effects me. OTOH - You smoke a lot of joints in your house, it's possbible that you might loose your job, and smoking pot daily has a negative effect on your health. Then I and the fellow tax payers, end up taking the cost associated with you smoking a joint in your own house.
Another example I like to use on this point: A woman decides to have unprotected sex with a man, in the privacy of her own home, get's with child then boyfriend leaves her. She goes on public assistance for food, health, rent assistance, child care, etc. I end up paying for what she did, in the privacy of her own home with another consenting adult. I'm not saying that she's a bad person, or doesn't deserve a little help back on her feet.
Let's face the facts that really, very little we do in the privacy of our own homes goes with out effecting other people for better or worse.
How the hell did this get modded as a troll? Unless the moderators have been smoking too much of this pot.
IANAL, but I seem to recall that it's only illegal to in possesion of it, buy it or sell it. Don't know that you can get busted for smoking it, else when people fail a drug test why isn't reporting it mandatory?
Ok, he's not particually popular anymore, but give Piers Anthony a shot. His Sci-Fi is pretty good, if maybe a little on the light side of the tech. Give "Bio of a space Tyrant" series a shot, "Ghost" and "Macroscope" also were very good.
I also loved FireFly, but that's just 'cuz I'm a perv.
So they invent this machine that connects everyone's minds together in this huge matrix so they can figure out problems of incredible complexity and in the process they save the planet.
How about "DeathKiller". If you going to use the idea, might as well use the name of the book too....
Its not science fiction, its very good, I enjoy it a heck of alot and have bought just about everything he has written.
A few things worry me about Spider's books, or his main characters more specific. I've yet to read one of his books where the main character wasn't either a musician, dope fiend, hippy or serious mac user (or all of the above). He's even got Tesla using what sounds like an IMac in Lady Slings the Booze.
I think he concentrates more on the emotions, feelings and people in his books than the tech. Even in DeathKiller (reprint of MindKiller and Time Pressure) that I just finished yesterday - there wasn't a LOT of science in it. Found the timing of this posting a little odd, finish a reprint book late one night and the next evening the author complains there isn't any new stuff coming out. Hmmm...
Oh well, I keep looking for books of his I don't have, just like Asmov, Heinlin and anything in the Bolo series.
I remember not long ago thinking how simple the system would have to be to have a smart car take over in situations where you'd normally use cruise control. Did a bit of poking around and found that a group in Germany built an automated car that was able to pass the German driving exam.
Pretty sweet stuff - will make my 13 hour drives to pick my kids up several times a year a lot easier to deal with.

work exactly as advertised and they work great.

YMMV
Not to dispair, lots of other people make hardware compatable with the X10 protocall.
check out SmartHome for the hardware and Misterhouse for the open source software.
