GC and caching are done very differently. In java memory has a counter associated with it. When you have two pointers to that memory then it has the value 2 stored somewhere with the memory. When you change the reference the counter is decremented. Every once in a while the GC will come along and free memory with a counter of 0. If you dereference that memory so that you have absolutely no pointers anywhere using the memory then you will have lost that memory although it is not freed until later.

  7. Throw hardware at it. on Programming As If Performance Mattered · · Score: 2, Interesting

My software engineering prof. believes that optimization should never be done during a project. Instead he thinks the programmer should wait until the project is complete then give careful consideration as to wether to optimize or not. He says most problems can be fixed by upgrading to better hardware and hours of optimization is not worth 3-4k more in hardware costs. I thought he was crazy to preach this during lecture. What do you guys think? Would you spend a day designing a better algorithm or finish the project and buy faster hardware?

When I first heard of bluetooth several years ago I was excited that there finally was a new wireless standard coming around and we could stop using flaky IR. Years passed. 802.11 arrived. More pherperials used RF. I accidentally ran into my first bluetooh product much later, it was an addon card that came with a motherboard. Still there were no bluetooth products widely available. Sure you could scour the net and find some odd company to ship something to you but BestBuy didn't carry anything at that time. Maybe things have changed now but frankly I lost interest. I've learned that unless you must absolutely have something be wireless, don't go out of your way to purchase wireless products. The hassle just isn't worth it. There is a great lack of support in the industry and economy for bluetooth, and rightly so. Why get rid of the cable when my mouse will work 10x better with one? It would have been neat to sync my cell phone over bluetooth, but there are so few bluetooth phones out there I'd be severly limiting my choices.
