-- learn what to do when you reboot and your ReiserFS comes up read only
-- research hardware problems (yes, of course i knew i had to unplug my PCMCIA NICs, load the appropriate modules, and then repeat the procedure later...)
not that i'm bitter.... had to go back to Win2k due to some work arriving in but i will return gentoo and dammit you will work!!!
*grovelling* tho if someone could explain the filesystem problem for me that would be great...
Actually English is the most difficult major language for a non-native to learn on the planet.
Utter and total crap. English is a very easy english to learn, because your english doesn't need to be perfect for you to be considered proficient. For normal, day-to-day communication you need something like 1000 words. One thousand words, and you can get by in any place in America.
And the last good comedy that came out of the BBC was Red Dwarf VI, which was *years* ago. (Sorry, The Office just makes me cringe).
can't agree with that one, having watched the wonder of Dave Gormans Important Astrology Experiment -:) If you haven't seen/heard of this guy go for it - he redefines the term obsessive compulsive
Rather than being forced to pay the TV licence I would prefer to have the option to pay a licence for the services I do use (the online content) and be able to buy the occasional BBC show that's worth watching on a pay-per-view basis.
sorry no - 'friad not. i'd rather have an independant channel that can produce and broadcast non mainstream programmes on *both* television and radio (not to mention their web presence) at a price that amounts to little over a few pounds a week. Pay per view is not the way to go - if you want to go down that line why not pay a few pounds more and support the BBC by using your local BBC shop. Granted there is a steaming turd beside every polished gem. Agree with you on The Office, someone likes it though and I suppose they have to broadcast it. Now if only I could replace those people with some with taste....
The Register reported on this previously. The limitations on access is not put in place by the BBC but rather by Olympic Committee regulations. The BBC is pretty good about its content and is probably more interested in internet technologies than most...
Another option is coLinux. Almost the same as using VMWare without the cost. From the site -
Cooperative Linux is the first working free and open source method for optimally running Linux on Microsoft Windows natively. More generally, Cooperative Linux (short-named coLinux) is a port of the Linux kernel that allows it to run cooperatively alongside another operating system on a single machine
I've been using it with the Debian image in recent days with few problems. Check out the Manager as well
Don't forget you can also try some of the other offerings from Sensible Software while you're there (Sensible Soccer and Mega Lo Mania highly recommended). Don't be afraid to give a donation while you're there - its great to be able to get access to this stuff - show your appreciation!!!!
Heck, why not encrypt the cd, have it access a server on the net where you put in your geographical location, favorite color, age, job position, mothers maden name, and your address, and they send you a floppy disk that has a program that checks for the original cd, then sets an "ok" flag in some directory, that will allow you to access the second digital key (each time you want to play the cd) from the internet, makes you take two steps backwards, turn clockwise twice, then hold the left mouse button, the - on the keypad, F2 and F10 all at the same time in order to listen to it.
performing this satanic ritual while listening to iron maiden will bring forth the beast with wrath - you have been warned
Those are GAME-BASED movies not MOVIE-BASED games.
so then is everyone looking forward to the Doom Movie?
Max Payne is the one i'm really looking forward too - that game is just destined for John Woo greatness (and may pull him out that creative slump that he's been in recently..).
this is probably the best answer to the question "Will Linux for Windows Change the World?"
I *am* one of those users who is completely windows based with aspirations of moving to Linux-land. i've been running coLinux for a few weeks now and already i feel like i've learned more than in any previous attempt. I've tried the dual boot, but at the end of the day I needed to be in windows to get things done. having the option of doing it in linux from Win2k gets around that (yes Cygwin, i know...). I've also tried the LiveCDs and found that trying to get anything done while my machine is trying to take off just isn't productive.
I think the other reason I like this project is that it gives me *less* choice in my Linux choices. Fedora, SUSE, Debian, Gentoo - not trying to start a religious war but at the end of the day they are just names to me. Better to sit at a generic console and work from there
So yes, it will change the world slowly one user at a time - any progress is good progress
just to give the source for that - The Dead Ale Wives, a group of Improv Comedians from Milwaukee came up with this horrible depiction of real life events (hell, it happens every time we game)Here is the google cache, the site seems to be down
in other news slightly related news (and since noone else has mentioned it I will), the next film from Marvel is the Punisher (with trailer available here! Hopefully infinitely better than the Dolph Ludgren original:s
theres also the fact that i don't *want* to use iTunes et all. if i'm buying music i want a cd, booklet, inlay, pictures of the bands pet fish, not a file that will disappear the next time i have have a HD crash.
Instead of mailbombing LA, why not try a different tact. After dumping the multiplayer section of Castle Wolfenstein, the source was thrown around and we've ended up with Enemy Territority - totally free, totally playable
It seems that they've been working on this for some time so the framework is already there. LA would not be releasing some TOP SECRET HIGHLY CONFIDENTIAL code as we already have SCUMM VM. There seems to be enough interest in the game, and since this is slashdot i'll assume there are a few programmers out there amongst the rest of the freaks, geeks and weirdo's that roam these halls that would be interested.
Again, not open source but what I've foun dvery handy for colating information is MyInfo. I've used for everything website design to D&D campaing planning. Also exports to HTML and pretty cheap too...
Not entirely what the poster was after, but interesting nonetheless RUNT is a pretty handy tool that can be made to boot from USB... If I remember correctly there was also possibly to configure ZipSlack to do this
I work as a network engineer, and routers and VPN devices usually come out of the boxes in EULAed bags... much like prepackaged software. You know... "Do not open this plastic cover unless you agree to the EULA"
