MP3? I thought Ubuntu asked if you wanted that and then enabled the repository for you...and whats wrong with the fonts?
But I am surprised no one gave a rebuttal: I just installed windows on my computer, it didnt find drivers...so off I go in search of drivers, reboot, install reboot, install. Oh wait I didn't have a firewall, so now I have viruses and bots. Reinstall, make sure I am behind a firewall, download and install drivers, reboot, reboot, reboot. Another hour wasted. I go to play a mpeg2, and windows media offers to find the codec. Of course it cant, so now I spend an hour researching how to get codecs and then realize I need to configure media player to not send information home, and then decide to get another video player. Research that for an hour, reboot. Now I need to decide on a decent antivirus software, spend time researching that, and install, reboot, update. Then I need to write a letter. Oh, I dont have a word processor? Open Office, ok, so download that and install maybe a reboot for good measure. Oh whats that, I should defrag the harddrive now? WTF is that? Ok so I do that, and its slow. Go to device manager, check to make sure DMA is enabled on the drive. Finish defrag, and now how many hours have gone by?

And thats why Windows isnt cutting it on the desktop.
I have had the same Linux distro on 2 computers for over 3 years and updating through Debian testing. No defrag, no antivirus, no nagging from vendor software, and it just works.

No problem with KDE, just set it up. KDE doesnt have to look like OpenSuse, and Gnome doesnt have to look like Ubuntu, but KDE gives you greater flexibility and more contextual menus then Gnome, along with their awesome KIOSLAVES (well with KDE 3.x anyways). BTW you can double click in KDE and Single click in Gnome, if you want to.

There is plenty of supply to meet your demand, no need to save for later.

If I didnt have the MP3's I could get them in short order from rip of my cd, or a library, or have em dropped off on my server by a friend, or turn on any classic radio station for more then 20 minutes.

I was a big fan, I even have hours of boots, back when that was interesting, and I still like them, but think about it, even 20 years ago (1987) you didnt have to buy an album or cassette because someones big brother or friend would give you one. They were very common during the transition to cd. And about 8 years after that I think you could pick up a cd in the $2 used bin.

It is a bit more organized, possibly more stable (I run unstable repo's so I cant really compare, but I would say that Gnome does seem to work). Appears nice looking, but in the details its sorely lacking and doesnt tell me a damn thing about files, dates, metadata, and so on. In the end Gnome is like OLPC and thats why its on the laptop. Soon I had made my own using other Linux ready "business software" that did not involve programming and it worked great. If my accountant demanded I use that "branded software" I simply said I would go elsewhere, because that meant they were simply making me do all the work anyways.

    Look, for windows:
    1. Search the internet for a program that does what you want.
    2. Read some reviews and see if its a legit program, and not some crappy ad-ware/botware.
    3. do you want to pay for this program? A decision must by made here.
    4. Download the program
    5. Run spyware and antivirus software on it
    6. Click install.exe
    7. accept EULA
    8. Choose if you are installing this for all users or your self
    8. hope and pray that it doesn't affect other programs or change extensions
    9. Use it, and if you dont like it:
9b. uninstall it and hope and pray you dont have to clean up after it.

However with Linux, if you know the package you want you could do a command line apt-get install foo
    OR
You can open your package manager (synaptic in my case) and do a search for "search" and read the desriptions of the package, such as beagle, and click on it to install. DONE. Removal is just as easy.

Thats why windows is a pain in the ass, and Linux is just easy.
So dont spread FUD. The average linux user gets used to speeding things up, and learns a few shortcuts, like the command line if they are so inclined.

Too bad we are stuck with something so poor for really writing documents and being productive, but that never is the real reason we use this stuff. No matter what you learn it takes time, but this is just a little step to making it easier to use a tool that really isnt good for much more then writing a letter. There are programs out there that work with the user and do the computers task of dealing with all the other tasks, but not many people are exposed to them.
