That's what you pay for on a land line.. Telco's generate their own power at each Central Office. Around here (Arizona) that is typically a huge rack of batteries (usually enough to run for 24 hours) plus a large CAT diesel generator with a huge gas tank.

Our labs are quite overkill as well, but we run a distributed GRID package on them.
It is open to researchers and students who sign up.

so while you don't need a p4 2.8 to surf the web, the spare cycles are being used. The grid is becoming quite popular.

(EDU gets some nice discounts from vendors as well, so that's another reason labs are frequently upgraded)

Anyone else musing with the idea that gmail is about more than free webmail to the world? Maybe it is Google's shot at stopping spam...

I know, i must be some google fanboy, but maybe i am.

I'm just thinking that maybe the 'Report Spam' button saves to a central database. Once Gmail becomes very popular Google will have a very up to date list of the current spam and spammers.
Essentially farming us Gmail users for spam addresses, IPs', and language patterns.

They can then offfer out the constantly updated database as a (pay) service to anyone else.
They seem to do well with sorting large amounts of data for relevance..

  11. Solaris vs Linux on Sun Mulling GPL for Solaris · · Score: 1

I use both Solaris and Debian at work.
My servers are split about 50-50 with more going over to Debian everyday.

What i like about Solaris is that it is bulletproof.
There are a couple of 10 year old boxes that i inherited that still run fine!!

On the other hand patches are a pain, and a lot of apps are compiled from source, making updates a real pain to handle.

With Debian, i can update my systems with a few commands and be all patched up.

I would love to see an apt-get for Solaris as Suns package management is a real pain in the ass.

I love the piece of mind knowing i'm patched against the latest software bugs that Debian (or any other linux) can give me.
but i love Sun hardware and the uptimes that i have on some system.s
