Just because someone is using DSL doesn't mean they are using PPPoE

The DSL provider in my area uses an ATM network that the modem syncs in to, to connect to it's assigned PVC, and from there all IP addresses are requested through DHCP. Static IP addresses are also an option, but still using DHCP, as they assign the PVC to a DHCP pool that has one available IP address, being the IP address that you will always get.

On the other hand, the cable provider in my area uses dynamic IP addresses as well.. I have never ONCE seen *any* cable provider offer only static IP addresses. Our local cable company changes 60$ more than a consumer account for the base level business account, which is the first account type to offer a static IP address.

This dumb article makes an assumption that all cable providers provide static IP addresses.. WTF? and either way, any site that reports a unique visitor count had better be doing it over a given time period, i.e. 10,000 unique visitors in a given month

don't "we" commonly measure code in terms of how many errors per KLoC it contains? How does any of this pale in comparison?

Some information derived from an old leaked MS email: The internal rule in Redmond is "4 bugs per KLoC".

that's one bug per 256 lines of code..one bug every couple of functions, for the smaller functions.. several bugs per function, for the more intensive functions.

and it's not like OSS is safe from this either. Sure, having error prone hardware will make perfection even more impossible, but seriously, you are far more likely to receive faulty RAM out of the box than to run in to an issue with one of these suckes.

This is MUCH more akin to something such as Dell (or any other vendor, picking on the biggie here) releasing an OEM version of their OS in which the administrator account's password is always the same, or something along these lines -- but wait, usually XP Pro doesn't have any admin passwords on OEM installations, it merely sits in the background, waiting for me to control+alt+delete twice at some home user's logon screen, and log in as administrator without a password. This has been an issue since XP Pro.. it isn't a problem with Microsoft, and it generally isn't even considered a problem. This is an issue with OEM's releasing Microsoft OS's. This issue isn't with Linux, it's with a Linux provider, and as such is completely irrelevant to the entire scenario (unless, of course, you are doing a Microsoft funded study of Windows VS Linux security)

It does this. The "Windows Classic" theme disables the DWM (Desktop Window Manager) which does all of the animation effects and I transparencies. It will set you to a similar (if not equal) look to Windows XP's classic theme.

However, a good note to make is that even though alt-tab (and windows/super key+tab) has a half second animation when switching in the "Windows Vista" theme, during this "lag time" if you type anything, it will act as if the window was already 100% activated, so you can, for example, alt+tab + alt-f4 right next each other, or w/e, unlike some OS candy I've seen that forces you to wait for the animation to finish.

I am beginning to feel like my productivity has been improved by vista, as a primary result of the eye candy. I can not pinpoint why -- maybe because I feel excited to use my computer again.

Oh, and if your graphic card sucks but you think your CPU can handle it, you can force software direct X features and/or force certain features on that it does not believe your graphic card can fluently handle.

And on top of that they've added in even more stuff MSN doesn't have, which is pretty much a standard for aMSN, beating even MSN Plus perks.
