My father was just telling me what my grandfather had said about running out of oil and other natural resources, and how my generation was going to suffer. That was over 50 years ago. Maybe it will happen yet...or maybe not...
Google already partnered with some utilities, and a few device makers (about 7 months ago). Most utilities are slow to provide opt-in to their customers. But anyone can install and watch their whole house power and consumption.
For example, the TED installs at your house main. It happens to send data to Google PowerMeter in the cloud (an App Engine application it seems.)
Right now, it is only one-way. Simply provides monitoring. Nothing can be controlled. You see your 10-minute average power in an iGoogle Gadget. As well as weekly and monthly total consumption, with a couple basic comparisons. In fact, the TED had an API, so anyone can read the second-by-second power readings and build your own charting application, or load a spreadsheet, or use the built-in browser to see gauges of power, etc.
So, to make it easier for device manufactures to provide usage data (probably not just electric, but gas and water as well), why not a chip that can be embedded into your device designs.
So the Universe only has 100 trillion more years before it is all sucked into a massive uber black hole. And then, one big void. And then, the next big bang, and it all starts over again. We're actually on iteration number 42 of an infinite loop.
My big wish is that factual reporting would regain its place ABOVE the opinionated offerings seen on places such as FOXnews
FOX News is better than all the other news channels. Certainly leaning right, no doubt about it. But, overall, a much better window to view our blathering leaders and crumbling nation through.
MSNBC is a disaster. CNN is scrambling, trying to retreat, if only modestly, from its left-lean. ABC is trying to claw its way back off the ledge. CBS has simply given up.
Some of my favorite people from other networks are joining FOX. I love it.
Let's call it Universal Internet Reform, declare the internet as a basic right, and have the US Government supervise, monitor, and maintain all aspects of the internet. If you want to register a domain name - talk to the new government agency, the United States Internet Maintenance and Monitoring Agency, or NAMBLA.
You must be under 25. Nethack requires an imagination. Check out this description of Nethack, and a story of one persons ascention with the Amulet, http://garote.bdmonkeys.net/nethack/index.html
Ha ha. We're getting screwed on all fronts. Huge bailouts with giant price tags. Huge Health plan with giant price tag. HUGE cap & trade tax that is a slap in the face of an economy trying to get on its feet. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
I'll give the North Korean or Iranian governments a couple drones any day - instead of a nuclear bomb. AhmadinejadâZ cannot destroy Israel with a few drones. He can with one bomb. That guy is a nut bag.
find other countries that are willing to cheaply crap on their own environments
I need a job. I'll start mining the backwoods of West Virginia again.
Hawking said something again. Yawnnn,,,,,
And the cover shot of the sky with trees makes it all so clear. And the byline "Learn by doing: less theory, more results". Even more clear.
Of course not. "maybe not" was not a good phrase to use.

Dust. I did the same. I was amazed at the difference in the temperature readings after the dust was cleared...
I'm holding onto my Atari 2600 console, and basket of games to sell to one of these collectors someday. Alas, only worth about $23 on EBay. Oh well. http://cgi.ebay.com/ATARI-2600-Video-Game-System-controllers-and-games-/190421866960?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Video_Games&hash=item2c560719d0#ht_522wt_935
Minesweeper, sure.
NetHack. By my calculations, I've spent more than 1000 man-hours playing NetHack on various platforms.

For those who have not seen Google PowerMeter, tinypic sample here.

I think 4 minutes is more like it. Seems like it should be a little closer to midnight.
The fog shrouded giant robots hooked me. Well done effects.
How many hundreds of hours does it take to create something like this?
You guessed right, slim jim! I've been watching too much Olbermann, Maddow, and Matthews. They're rubbing off on me.
If only you had not posted as anonymous coward, I would applaud your assessment.
I get a daily chuckle at my ultra liberal nutbag colleagues.
Lately, they've been toning down their excitement for all-things Obama. I guess they aren't quite at the Pelosi level of nutbag-itude.

I'll give it 10 days before another incident shuts it down for a year.
Not so simple. It really isn't.
Who are the Chicago Bears? And who is Brett Favre?

Such a beautiful picture of a bee and a dandilion...and on slashdot. Awwww.
I'll take the "over" bet on this one. It will not restart successfully until after June 1, 2010.

I just hope it can all be undone in 3.5 years.

So what.
