Apple has a copyright on the term "Digital Hub"... and as their PC counterparts finally 'get it' 2 years later, they all scramble to co-opt the concept.

The above statement isn't flame bait... I think the future roll of a computer will be to serve as the central control for all the little gizmos we continue to surround ourselves with. I'm just glad the rest of the market is finally defining a future roll for the PC instead of trying to convince me that I need a Tablet PC if I want productivity from my 'puter.

Personally, my christmas present to myself this year was a media PC (well, the parts for one). I went with the ATI 9600 AIW Pro, which offers very good gaming under windows, a good PVR package for windows, and can work with Freevo and MythTV (although setup will be much harder than with a Hauppauge).

The AIW 9600 just offered so much flexibility at an affordable price... had to go with it.

just to clarify... you can not load music (mp3, aac etc.) files via the os and have them show up in the ipod's playlists. You can manage files by directory using only the OS's GUI, as long as you dont want them to be available in the ipod's playlists.

If you are reasonably adept at the CLI, you can shoe-horn files into and out of the active playlists directory on your ipod. This would be a laborious task, and there is no reason to do so, when the iTunes interface is so slick.

As for flexibility from your iPod, I'm shocked that no-one mentioned this: http://ipodlinux.sourceforge.net/

Flash is no problem, shockwave also good. On Macs you will get fewer game titles to choose from than on windows (assuming you might dual-boot for some games), but the better games usually get ported over, probably more than do for Linux. In general (not always), games get ported poorly from windows to mac, meaning that what ran fine on your 1ghz Athlon may struggle on your 1.2ghz G4 tower. Video card is supremely important on macs for that reason. If games are the main thing you do on your computer, stay with a PC. If you just want general productivity, an occasional game and a machine that is just plain 'cooperative' with you, then go Mac.
