  1. Re:I still don't get it.. on Desktop Linux on x86 - Adapt or Die · · Score: 1

How about this: The new Macs, apparently, can run Windows as well as OS X. Dual-booting the two would seem really attractive for would-be switchers. The type of people who want a really good, solid OS, and Windows for gaming and the occasional nonported software.

Now, the solid OS option in a dualbooting situation is mostly Linux right now. But with the new Macs, the "solid" option can be either Linux, or OS X. Personally, this would be enough to turn me over to Macs and OS X, and possibly away from desktop Linux.

(Note: I'm nearly 100% certain that Jobs or someone said the new Macs will likely run Windows and they will do nothing to stop it, they will only stop folks from using OS X on nonMacs. Makes sense since it's the hardware they sell)

    Offline mode is still problematic.

    A) If you have an internet connection running, it will not run in online mode. It may also not not let you do it if you have a LAN-only connection, or at least it takes awhile to check and see if it can connect to the Steam Servers. As well, should the Steam servers be overloaded and you try to log on, you have no ability to play offline as the key info is deleted. You have to log in successfully and quit Steam totally once, and not log in again until you intend to use it online.

    B) If any update is not complete, you have to allow it to complete before going into offline mode. This could be problematic for a dialup user who just pops onto it to have a game with a buddy, sees an update being required, and chooses to delay it.

    C) You still need to be connected online to install in the first place

They figure that they'll eventually get it so useful information is displayed in the place of billboards. Weather forcasts or email or whatnot.

That's just one application of that technology though, and it's still probably not being commercially produced.

I do see your point about the variable map sizes, the variations are quite interesting to see (and the demo doesn't include the 64 player map). At that I was just basing my little report on the technical things I saw, mostly. I really do like the gameplay, especially how they improved the support classes like the medic.

As for the settings, I did muck around a bit and run it okay at high settings, 1024x768, with shadows and something else at medium (like yours). It's still not quite good enough on 32 player servers that I've tried AA, but I'll do some tweaking and see what I can get.

The load times are especially horrendous (minutes), and it has to do "shader optimizing" each time you load after changing your video settings, which takes even longer.

It does have a fairly nice draw distance though.

The full version will only have 12 maps, however, and this demo doesn't look incredibly bright. Maybe I'm just a pessimist, I must play more =)

Nintendo seems to be aiming for (and may succeed in a degree) two things:

    1) Non-gamers will play their games. The people who don't care for the GTAs and Halos of gaming (or may be bored of them), the type who would like something that's intuitive, easy, and fun to play. Oddball things like Nintendogs, Electroplankton, and whatever the heck the Revolution is should only help that.

    2) Gamers may want the Nintendo Revolution in addition to one of the other consoles. It's likely that, with the low power estimations they've been giving us (though they tend to be quiet), the console will not be that expensive. It is also likely that it will have some off the wall controller or the likes, and it will definately have ROM downloading. These things could make it attractive to normal gamers, even if they already have an Xbox360 or PS3. Not a replacement for those, since it can't stand in the normal gaming sense, but as an addition.

That and they're indeed completely nuts =)

... are that many of them are pretty dern alike, and there are limited genres within. Yet, this is why they sell. People like buying every GTA game, every run-and-shoot platformer, all the nearly identical FPS games. Until there start to be strategy games (I love Galactic Civilization and Sim City 4), moddable games, online games like Tribes/Tribes 2/Battlefield/BF2/Others that have a real good amount of depth (and should be possible with the increased console RAM), and etc., several PC gamers will stubbornly own just a PC or both.

I don't see how these types of games aren't possible anymore. TVs are at HD, allowing strategy games to work better. At least one of the consoles is using standard USB (hello keyboards/mice). They'll have harddrives, they'll have lots of RAM, they'll have downloadable things. I'm just hoping we don't get more of these simplisitc console games this time around (not that all are like that, just >90%), which is exactly what I hoped last time.

Also why I'm looking (bit doubtfully) at Nintendo, since they make completely insane things that work only as console games and aren't like shallow versions of PC genres.
