It wouldn't be NVidia's fault of MS decided to stop licensing the APIs to them (or priced them out of existence). Or are you really going to blame NVidia on something caused by MS?
Everyone supports it already? It's been out since at least 1996. It's been at least 5 years. I would hope "everyone" would be supporting the MS sponsored 3D API for Windows.
Besides, two words: Id Software.
4 Titles: Quake, Quake2, Quake3, Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
If you need more, Half-Life.
In other words, every major game out there that I know of supports OpenGL. And as was mentioned in a previous post, John Carmack has made a conscious decision to develop only for OpenGL. That also means Id can port their games to Linux and other *nixes that much faster.
And Microsoft isn't exactly crushing OpenGL with DirectX. The only way they'll be able to do that would be by buying the patents and then refusing to license the technology without a DirectX version.
You must live somewhere near the edge of the county like I do. You're right, from where I am it only takes about 45 mins. If you're living in south OC though, it takes an hour and a half easy. Hell, if you're trying to get from Irvine to Cypress at rush hour, 5-7p, it takes about an hour. I used to work in Irvine and I live in Cypress, so I do know what I'm talking about.
And between the disgust that is Los Angeles the city and the better parts that are in Los Angeles the county, those boundaries are very meaningful.
And you're mentioning of Santa Ana and Stanton in the same sentence as "wealthy" is quite disturbing. Under that statement, Irvine, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, etc, etc would be millionaires.
I do agree regarding the materialism, but how is LA any different? If you ever watch the news when they're talking about fashion, they don't come to OC, they go to LA. I don't personally pay any attention to it and find it kinda disturbing when people put so much effort into being "fashionable". But I, however, am a geek, so fashion matters to me not.
My sister lives in LA. I live in OC. Housing is not WAY cheaper. It's a bargain compared to LA. To hear her talk 350k for a house is a total bargain. Of course, I wonder how many people have posted that come from South OC. Yes, South OC is way expensive. It's almost like a miniture silicon valley (I'm talking Irvine down to Aliso Viejo). Of course, there are reasons why it's expensive (and no, it doesn't really have to do with people willing or having the money to pay for it, but more to do with there being nowhere else to live). However, more and more OC residents are starting to move back to north OC since you can't find anything in south OC for less than 500k anymore.
What do you mean by boring? My sister manages to find things to do just about every night. Oh, that's right, you're posting to Slashdot. You must be a geek. You're right then, it is boring here. Nothing better to do than play RTCW online all the time:p
Most fans weren't upset JUST because N'Sync got a cameo. Most were upset because they used their celebrity status to get that cameo. A lot of fans (and other REAL actors) have been petitioning Lucas for years to be extras in one of the movies. Some are even willing to pay Lucas for the privilege. Then this boy band asks and they are given a spot? Lucas has thousands of fans willing to fly themselves whereever, wear whatever, and do whatever in order to be in the movie. Yes, some are even willing to be in costume as long as they can be in it. This felt like a slap in the face to those fans.
Hell, instead of using CG extras, they could get those thousands of fans to be REAL extras. We all know it would look a hell of a lot better.
Actually, I believe it's addressed in Two Towers or Return of the King. Gandalf mentions something about having more than one staff. Ian McKellen (sp?) has also mentioned it on his website.
Then you should also know that that explanation is the public one. The poster before you got it right. It was changed because of Star Trek II. The reason was then later changed to match what you wrote.
And I would suggest that you do a little more homework regarding these thousands of deaths you just mentioned. The thousands of deaths you talk about are from either gangs or criminals that used illegally bought weapons to do their killing. Did you know that it is a felony to even touch a gun if you're a convicted felon? 25 years automatic in prison. Did you also know that it's another 25 if you use a gun in the committing of a crime? We already have plenty of laws to deal with gun toting criminals. Besides, and this in no way is meant to make those deaths look good, but more people die in drinking and driving accidents every year than by guns. Should we ban cars and alcohol next? They tried alcohol and that failed miserably.
What are they gonna do? Change their return policy to be that all sales are final? No returns or exchanges no matter what? The only places that do that are usually going out of business, which they'll be doing pretty fast if they do do that.
Case in point: I once bought a CD at Tower Records (this was quite a few years ago). It had a small chip in it so it would skip on one of the tracks. I took it back the next day and exchanged it. Sure, I didn't check the return policy when I bought it, but if they had told me that I couldn't even exchange it, I would've asked to speak with a manager. If that got no where, I would just tell them that I'm never shopping at Tower again and that I'm going to tell all my friends and relatives to do the same. Having your customer base threatened will usually get policies changed, even if only in your case.
Now, imagine if everybody starts having problems playing CDs on their equipment and starts bringing them back to exchange them thinking their just "defective". So Joe Consumer brings his CD back, exchanges it, and the next one is bad too. He brings that one back, exchanges it for a new one that they play in the store before he leaves with it. It plays fine on their equipment so he goes home thinking it will work fine. Hmm, it doesn't work on my computer, let me try it in my stereo. Hey, it works fine. I wonder if anyone else has a problem with these. He gets online, checks some things out, and finds out that it won't play on his computer. He's either A) going to just keep it and deal with it and do more homework next time, or B) take it back, tell them the situation and demand his money back, possibly having to speak with a manager.
Now that's just one person. What if hundreds of people start doing that. There is no way a store is going to be able to change their return policy to state that they don't accept returns on all CDs. Worse that could happen is they start putting signs by the CDs with protection stating that they may not play in your computers CD drive.
So you're saying that I can protest the government in public in China and Iran and not fear arrest, but I can't do that in the US? And let's not even try to compare McCarthyism to Reaganism. McCarthyism was about weeding out the communists in the public and giving them a bad name so that no one would deal with them (black listed). Reaganism was about getting rid of communist governments world-wide in an effort to make the world more free, but that doesn't mean you can't be a citizen with communist feelings and protest your Democratic government if you want. They are distinctly different. I will admit that we had a few very bad politicians a few years ago (McCarthy), but people seem to be getting enough intelligence to not let those people get into very high public offices (they are still sometimes elected as local mayors in small towns, but to my knowledge, nothing beyond that).

So you consider installing something like Client Services for Netware a rare occasion? Reboots should be used only for hardware and kernel upgrades/patches.
Forgive if I'm wrong, but didn't Linus start out with Linux being only on i386, with no intent to make it cross platform? I know it's cross platform now, but wasn't Linus' original intent just to have a good Unix like OS on Intel x86 architecture? From what I understand, it wasn't until other people got ahold of the code that it started to become cross platform.

With the restriction that you can't modify the code without notifying the author of the changes you've made (not a bad thing, but still a restriction).
You are correct. Except that when he was asked politely what was in his jacket (he admitted himself he was dressed like he was gonna cause trouble) he told them he left his grenades at home. Would you as a cop seriously not have reason to suspect he might have weapons at that point? I would, and that is enough to warrant a search. Remember, illegal search and seizure is a crime except when there is reasonable suspicion.
Monopolies themselves aren't illegal. It is the abuse of a monopoly that is illegal. As one analyst said during the trial, they should admit they have a monopoly, since they do, but try to convince the judge that they are not abusing that monopoly.
The only reason AT&T and Standard Oil got split up is because they were ABUSING their monopolies.
Unless you consider that most people that use lightsabers are Jedi and therefore they probably use the Force to help them control the blade. Then there's that whole fiction thing too:)
Well, your opinion is wrong. If you knew your Star Wars history, you'd know that Lucas knew what he wanted to do. He didn't know if the films would go over well. Hence, no ANH on the initial release. It would have looked odd to see Episode IV on the supposed first movie in a series. The ANH was added once he got the go ahead for the sequel, TESB. I also seem to remember that Siskel and Ebert made comments about the addition of the Episode IV subtitle.
That's a bad analogy because you can take the radio you got with your ford out and replace it with something better. By having IE so deeply integrated with the OS, it is impossible to remove without breaking a few things. Would your ford break if you took the radio out and replaced it? I didn't think so. Sure you can use a different browser, but IE is still there. Would you like to have to drive around with two radios just because you couldn't take one out because the car company decided to tightly integrate it with the rest of the car? I didn't think so. If I don't want to use IE, I shouldn't have to have it taking up space on MY hard drive on MY computer.
There's a difference between Star Trek and Star Wars though. Lucas not only controls it, but he's alive. Roddenberry controlled Star Trek (and it was pretty good at the time), but now he's dead and things have gone to hell. Things really started to go in the last season of TNG (which just happens to be when Roddenberry died). While I don't think Lucas will make anymore movies past episode 3, I'm sure the toy makers and comics will try to go for as long as possible.
I just wish it had been here sooner. I checked out a couple other reviews, but I wish I had read this one first. It's right on the mark. I caught the blatant bad stuff (like trying to intercept the other ship during the doomed orbital burn), but missed some of the other things (though I was wondering how a green house with Earth atmosphere could exist in a tent blowing in the wind with Mars atmosphere outside). And who ends a movie with The End. Does that really leave any room for a sequel (assuming there will be one, though I don't know why)? When I saw that, it took the cake. I usually wait through the credits a bit but I was out of my seat almost before the credits rolled. I may have left before they got to the rest of the crew realizing they were going to starve. I just wish I hadn't wasted 2 hours of my life watching this movie. Wait for it to come to TV. If you don't want to wait for that, just make sure you don't pay for it, make someone else do that:)

So this gets modded up to Insightful (from Funny) and the reply gets modded down as OffTopic?! What the hell is going on?!

No, it was probably the people buying software, taking it home, burning a copy of it and then returning the original that was costing them so much.
