  1. how was this overkill? on Toledo Uncappers Getting Shafted · · Score: -1, Flamebait

if they were estimated to have stolen $11k each I think that they should have gotten what they did.

EVERYONE KNOWS THAT UNCAPPING YOUR MODEM IS WRONG. "Maybe the worst that would have happened was getting disconnected..."

How about the collective theft of all the other people that were getting screwed b/c these people were stealing THEIR bandwith?

Oh, he was only getting 128k downstream... I used to live in the Toledo, OH area and worked with multiple people using Buckeye-Express. ALL of them had NO complaints. If you had a problem you would call up (and due to the fact that it was ALL local) the problem was usually solved in short-order. So I think that if this guy was only getting 128k downstream he wasn't on the phone asking Buckeye questions.

I'm sorry, but I don't feel a thing for these people. If you stole that much money from someone, I hope that they would try to get you w/everything they could.

Search the web for "hacking cable modem config files", you'll find TFTP instructions, how to setup the cfg file, etc. HACKING is illegal and punishable.

Again, no sympathy. I just want my whatever bandwith. I don't want it to goto hell b/c someone else hacks their cfg file.

    They're not?

RedHat does it's own thing just like every other distribution. Unfortunatly they are more powerful commercially than the other distributions b/c of their name and their "backing".

By pulling their collective resources and talent I'd say they have a better chance of taking on Microsoft (not fighting for contracts from Walmart amoungst themselves).

If I were you, I would think about what UL is trying to accomplish. They are banding together to make a standard to compete...against RedHat, against MS, against X.

Umm, ok, so we used to have Slackware. The reason I switched from Slackware to RH back in the day was for the simple fact that I was having more and more difficult of a time running newer programs (gtk, libc6). So say one distribution gains more power and forces OLD libs to stay around... That stifles what we are trying to achieve.

What's wrong w/Mandrake? What isn't? That's my opinion and that's yours... That's why I don't want Linux distributions to merge.

Why is UL crap? b/c they are trying to band against what they believe is an attempt by one distribution to gain too much power.

I don't think that UL will gain much ground but that doesn't mean it's crap.

All the +4 and +5 posts complaining about Michael and the poor editing I am sure get noticed.

Does it matter if we paid or not? No, it's still Malda's site and he can do what he likes w/it.

The least they could do was change their title from "editors".

If I had money, I would contribute when my subscription runs out. It's not for the lack of ads, it's to keep /. going so I don't have to search elsewhere for SOME of the news I read here.

w/the bottom up provisioning that is already in place w/ATTBI, I doubt that there will be much of a problem moving over to Comcast (as long as Comcast keeps the provisioning model the same, which I can't see why they wouldn't).

From @Home -> ATTBI they tried to manually put everyone into the provisioning database, but couldn't w/anyone that had a proprietary modem (Motorola Cybersurfer Wave, COM21 proprietary, some LANCity's).

So when AT&T RoadRunner when to ATTBI all the users had to do was call and get the instructions, some of them actually recieved instructions in the mail (that most people here would have no problems following).

there is a web page called the SAS registration page. You goto that site (w/a proxy set temporarily) and the site grabs your MAC address from the modem and allows you access to the new network.

PRAY that Comcast keeps this. The changeover will be mostly painless.

Comcast was telling the CSRs that they would have more concentration on GOOD customer service and less problems... They WANT to keep customers, not ignore them till they leave.

Again, we can always hope :)

Explain to me how what you have is better? I had DSL for years before cable was available in NW Ohio. I would NOT switch back, ever.

I had RoadRunner for over a year. Rarely lost block sync, had INCREDIBLY fast speeds (close to 300k/s), and it was cheap (49.95).

I worked for ATTBI as a CSR and now unfortunatly I have to use them as my HSD service now that I have relocated to Minneapolis (AT&T area).

I still get 1.5mbs/256k, no loss of sync, and at 46.95/mo (w/my own cable modem and no CATV service)

So, w/DSL I had TWO different people I had to talk to if there was a service problem (Verizon and the ISP), neither talked to each other, and the one ALWAYS blamed the other.

80k/s or 200+ for the same price? There is no argument here.
