I really don't think the "appel of Linux" has anything to do w/alternative PHYSICAL appearances.
The draw of Linux is speed, stability, cost.
"Hippy hackers" aren't necessary going to come w/the product. Those that have already been working for a company that is going to begin using it are going to either a) already be familiar with it or b) will become familiar with it.
"Linux-geeks" are growing-up just the same as the actual OS itself. That's why we are seeing more and more in the real-world.
I disagree. The young consumers are following as they always have. The problem now is that the RIAA is charging more and more for music to "protect" the artists.
Problem w/this protection is that it costs the young consumers too much. A new album that comes out is normally priced way lower than others (see previous statements by record store owners that lose money on new releases due to this fact). The older albums are priced too high (which distracts the interest of these buyers).

nearly everytime something of this comes up I offer links to both etree and FurthurNET so that people can experience artists that allow the free taping of their events.
These two sources are probably the best way to experience artists in their element.
Just seems like people would rather rape and pilage the P2P networks instead.
it's not that. My roommate and I have a large MP3 collection that we use during parties. We have one of the widest and well-liked collections (so we hear).
We collect a range of music (whether or not we feel it sucks, there's always the "next" button) so that just about anyone that comes over can hear something that they appreciate. It keeps the serious drunkards happy.
The RIAA found that young consumers are less likely to forge strong bonds to the music that they buy and are unlikely to either buy previous albums from an artist or subsequent albums.
So. Music today basically blows. The major component of the music market are less likely to buy a ton of CDs from one artist and are instead more likely to just hop the bandwagon for a short time...
this is NOT "offtopic". It is "redundant" as we see this shit everyday. The editors choose links from sites that require you to enter information which is private.
So interesting that we are SO privacy oriented until it comes to getting information from a site that we link to...
Editors, listen to the SUBSCRIBERS and do what we ask. Find an alternate source of information that does NOT require us to sell our souls to the devil for access.
how could you not like it? Instead of having to open 5 different windows of Mozilla I have just one and easy access to each (I use E and don't have the option of a taskbar or icons).
I can have Slashdot open, my banking open, and porn (three different ones usually).
Also probably conserves on my short memory usage;)

So, the card is on the CD but it won't copy. Explain to me HOW I am going to be able to use this burned CD w/o the smartcard?
no, I'm not bothered about pirating stuff. People are going to pirate stuff anyway, including this. My problem is that I am not going to have an easy way to go about what I am allowed to do.
let's count how many posts say "the crackers will have this fixed in X days."
I don't understand where my ability to make backups for myself has gone. That's part of my right as an OWNER of a piece of software. I am ALLOWED to make a backup for myself.
With this, if the disc goes to crap or the "smart card" goes to shit what am I going to do? Can I call up Doc-Witness and say, "hey, send me my money so I can get a new CD?"
One, no, they are NOT going to edit the posts. They have made that perfectly clear b/c two simple facts that a) they refuse to stop fucking up, and b) b/c they won't apologize when they do.
Two, we continue to post about this and we are modded "Offtopic" or "Redundant" (which I find very appropriate in this instance).
I still think that we need a method of moderating posts. The "editors" should be banned from posting when they receive a -2.
actually, I am quite annoyed with it as well. I don't sit there and look at the bottom of my browser to determine what the link is. I happened to click the "middle" link. Then I realized what they did.

I have cable so 1 hr isn't a big deal but for a dialup user 9 hours is a bit extreme. You would think that they would at least OFFER another option for slow connections. Sheesh.

no, but it won't stop. People have been submitting these stories to get/. exposure more and more recently.
Can we start having an option to moderate stories down? Rate them 0 to 10. That way you can browse at whatever you want (either get them all or get only the top)?
I would think that er.no would be more appropriate ;)
define "geek".
The way you are defining it is negative.
Linux is becoming less geekish as it grows. It is no longer necessary at all to be a geek to use it, understand it, and implement it.
I really don't think the "appel of Linux" has anything to do w/alternative PHYSICAL appearances.

That was my main problem w/Loki in the past. As great as RR Tycoon was, it wasn't something that caught my eye so much that I wanted to buy it.
I am not a fan of the WineX ordeal but the amazing things that they are doing as far as getting games working is just great for the community.
I read recently that GTA3 is working under it. If I didn't have a PS2 I would most certainly be interested in that.
