Linux is not something that they can understand in terms outside of dollars/cents. It is something that the general public cannot understand either.
Ask people who use computers at work what their ENTIRE network is based on... "Windows9x/NT". They have no idea that it is possible to have a Unix-based network running behind this.
ok great, we all know it's free. This goes back to my point that MOST people don't understand this fact.
These people walk into their local software store, see Windows XP upgrade for $100 (or whatever it is) and see Mandrake and RedHat right next to it (at least in close proximity) for $25/65. These people know that Linux is not as easy to use at Windows but they see it isn't for free.
MOST people will assume that Linux is one single entity (not multiple distributions) and think that it is for cost.
So, now we have people writing stories to further this false info. Yay. This will continue to drive Linux into the ditch as far as the masses go.
is this what they do in the real world? I am trying hard as hell to find a job and people that have them get to run around shooting fucking rubber bands at e/o instead of doing work.
My last job I worked 100% of the time that I was there. I didn't have downtime to talk on AIM or surf the web (well, we weren't allowed to in the first place). The most free-time I would have was the hour of breaks.
Hey, anyone out there who is looking for a responsible, recently unemployed, history major with geek status please let me know. At least I won't be wasting your money shooting off all the spare rubber bands in the utility drawers.

It's a living soap opera led by Tim, Katz, and Rob.
We hate MS, Billy has gone and done it again, owning himself by allowing Windows to be taken over by Shatter.
OMFG, the world is coming to and end, Linux didn't make it as a desktop OS.
well, they may not work for mosquitoes but the little dog collar ones work well for all other types of pests (fleas/ticks/etc).
My dog (back in the day) used to chew herself raw every summer. We tried the large collars, the shampoos, the regular dog/flea/tick collars, nothing.
My grandmother (of all people) was watching HSN (of course) and ordered these electronic dog collars that were to repel pests. Vet said it would never work. She wore that thing until she died. Never chewed again.
Maybe it is bullshit for mosquitoes but it does apparently work for other critters.
so, if there is legislation that says that they can do it, is it possible for me to have my own disclaimer that says if they do it to me that they are responsible for the damage done to my connection/computer during the time that they are attacking me?
No, there is absolutely no replacement for hands on building. To put something together on the computer would not be anywhere near the experience you get from building an "igloo" out of Construx around yourself and screaming for your mom to come lift it off you w/o breaking it (heeh).
How about spending hours playing w/roller coaster kits and watching the roller coaster fall upside down time after time because it was just about impossible to make it do a loop.
I used to love building forts, using construx, etc. I was never a fan of Legos (parts were too small?) nor was I a fan of any "computer level builders". Roller Coaster Tycoon lasted about 3 days in my house as a college student. Even w/all the cheats it wasn't fun.
We need to bring back hands on experience. Computers rot your brain;-)
for many years underaged sex has been a major component of media/values (are they one in the same?)
Lately, especially considering the obvious attention it has been given.
P.A. seems a bit odd in his responses. I understand that this is "adult fiction" but he had to have known what a major component of his audience was after the first few novels came out. I read this shit in like 6th and 7th grade. At the time none of this young sex shit crossed my mind (nor does it really now, just that these people pointed it out). It just strikes me as odd that he continues to mention that we strolled off the main strip to read his material before we were ready...
YOU SHOULD NOT BE WRITING ABOUT THIS SHIT ANYWAY.
He said something along the lines of him being attracted to young girls (all of the female persausion), dude, that's making it stretch a bit far, I was happy w/tough, you shouldn't have read it.
It is understandable that the media-brainwashed public is upset over his fictionalized alt.sex.stories.fantasy.young but he is a little strange in his beliefs as well.
Why? Because as much as we all love MacOS X, how wonderful its GUI is, how fast it is, that is Unix based, etc, it does NOT run on i386.
Unfortunately I will most likely never be able to afford a closed hardware system like Apple. Their machines are great, their OS is finally great, but that still doesn't allow me the freedom of CHOICE, less expensive hardware, etc.
Macs are great and all but Mr. J is just as bad as Billy.
Nope, it's not an invasion of privacy. You are using a publically accessable program to break the law (whether I see it this way or not is not the point).
The MPAA didn't come to your house and serve you w/a fine, warrant, etc. They called your ISP, told them you did X and asked them to stop you.
The ISPs usually have a TOS agreement that you agreed to when you started the service. By downloading this shit, you broke that TOS. The ISP has the right at that point to stop you from breaking those TOSs.
It's not invasion of privacy until they actually arrest you for doing it. That would be crossing the line.
he's bored remember. He's not into all that science mumbo-jumbo. How dare you expect him to think that deeply into anything w/his ADHD and his Dyslexia.
Some people prefer other formats and would find it very easy to use a device like that to rip their CDs to.
Live music dies in MP3 format. SHNs are the only way to go. If I could pop in a CD, have it rip to SHN I would be VERY pleased. Currently I have to rip to WAV, convert to SHN, etc:(

I didn't see it for $24.99. I saw it for $64.99.
Most people are going to see XP right next to Mandrake or Redhat. When I was in Staples/Best Buy I see Linux listed for $100+.
Now, people know that XP runs all software and know that Linux is lacking in that department (if they know anything at all).
$300 for XP or $100 for Linux... It's an easy choice for a user.

hell, I get stoned and play GT3. I *swore* there were cars pysically next to me (that's what I get for playing w/the Logitech wheel)
I was 8. I don't really think an average 8 year old is going to raytrace an igloo.

I am sure that the fixes were more than "spelling mistakes".
Most likely making sure that OSX would run MS software (if I had to take a guess).

Just my worthless
I actually prefer the SNES version of Tetris. I just replaced a controller last week so I could continue to feed my serious addiction to that game.
Damn French. I bet the previous record holder (American) had a beer :)
I am so sick and fucking tired of hearing this.

some people like to know when a cool looking modification comes out for their computer. Nerds especially.
I am not a fan of it either but how does that make it not newsworthy for nerds?
How about instead of having a Mac-Clone case for my PC I get MacOS X for i386. Now that's a fucking brilliant idea :)
I deal w/fifty or more individuals daily for tech support.
40 are running Win98/ME, 5 are XP, 4 are Win95/etc, and 1 is MacOS.
that is an average.
