formkey bugs have been pissing me off for longer than just the weekend. It happens at like 1 out of 3 posts for me. It is actually pretty annoying to be told you cannot post b/c you already did. Nevermind the fact that sometimes it tells me that I don't have enough in the post (I think that a 12 word sentence is plenty).
Advertisements.. Eat me. "Slashdot is 4 years old and I want it here in 4 years." If the fucking traffic has increased 10% then that is just that much more money that you are making. Don't feed me this bullshit that I have to pay to get rid of them. The god damn subscription fee best be $1/yr or else you are full of shit.
-- enough of my annoying crap --
Funny posts -2? You said half the time they aren't funny (yes subjective..) yet more than 3/4 of the time they are funny. Assigning them -2 isn't much good, just remove them all together if you don't like them -2 is just going to make a 5 post a 3 and most people are still going to see it.
As far as blocking AC's... I say put in a AC asshole filter. Only blocking the god damn idiots that post (anything w/your specified words).
Thanks for keeping up the site for the most part you do a good job. I will pay $1/yr to remove the ads, otherwise you are making more money off me than you would if I just had the damn ads.
really? You think? Old 486s and RAM would be useful to other people and not us? I haven't heard that before on a post like this.
I keep all my old hardware for no reason just as many others do. It sits in my closet and people marvel at the size of the collection. I think people see it and feel the need to donate to me.
Just send the people over there money. They don't need us building the damn computers for them. If they have money, they got what they need. Hell, they may even be able to afford some nice computers.

"I am a whining loser that can't find a job and I am going to bitch about it on/. where tons of people will read my reply and think the exact same thing I did and mod me up."
Then they will sit there and think to themselves, "I just wasted +1 on this fool."
Honestly, I am happy for the guy and I could see him seriously asking this question only for feedback from the largest group of online people in his field.
I agree, the only real way to get to gamers is to start serious devleopment on Linux games. Until there is some steady games released on both platforms I can't see Linux winning in this.
If they did though, what's your basis for this statement? How many other "open" ideas has MS gone against and forced w/their own bullshit? ActiveX, Java, etc? Come on, be serious.
it says that you have to use POP3. Why wouldn't that include any client that supports POP3? There is nothing in a POP3 transmission that is hidden. If they were really forcing you to use it (which I highly doubt) then you could trick the server into thinking that you are coming from an Outlook client.
Personally I would complain to your ISP about the lack of service for non-MS clients (if this is truly the case).
Well then I am going to have to agree w/what Metallica did. OTOH I don't agree w/the rest of the shit that is going on. Most artists do NOT allow this sort of trading and are attempting to stop it.
b/c of Napster? lol. It is b/c of the artists and the companies believing that these services (and CDRs) are taking away their percious fucking money. WRONG. It is poor business practices, bad pricing, and the fact that no one wants to buy a fucking CD for 3 or 4 good songs...
Make a CD in which EVERY song is as good as the title track and then there will be less of a chance that it will not be bought. That's how it worked before and that's how it will always work.
Enjoy your freedom of music and support those that allow it.
yeah the bands themselves do it but the companies and bands have every right to stop piracy any way they know how. I do agree that this is not the best way to do it (creating better music is not going to stop it it will probably just help to spread it).
Personally I believe that the best way to do it is to allow free recording of every show that an artist puts out. A devout fan is more likely to BUY a studio album if they can already get a taste of what the band is capable of on stage.
I hate the idea of copy-protected CDs (and personally I will not buy them) but I have a feeling we won't have a choice. Boycotting them won't work (try boycotting any chain, etc) it is HIGHLY unlikely that numbers of bought CDs will drop in any significant amount. (Just as they haven't dropped due to Napster, Gnutella, whatever).
Individuals will NOT police services themselves. That's fucking ridiculous. People are accustomed to copying music (I know I have been making my own compilations for years why would I stop now).
Support bands that support free music. Don't support bands who are in it only for the money.
not very. BMG suffers a lot from young kids screwing them over. They have no right to enter into a contract and thus BMG has little course of action to take against one.
I really don't understand why BMG lets them get CDs but I guess the ones that don't pay are a lot less than those that actually do.
if it came bundled w/your computer I don't see how it isn't yours according to a "REAL" definition. Just b/c if came w/your computer does not mean that you didn't somehow end up paying for it.
They do that to be sneaky. Blah. If you paid for a computer w/an MS product installed you paid for Windows someway, somehow.
If Quake4 is released w/any bugs, runs slow on decent hardware (I consider a 400mhz computer decent), and is fucking HUGE (minimum req is ridiculously high) then I will be sorely disappointed.
If you need to assemble the god damn thing to make it run fast, do it. I am sick and tired of "great" games being released that are frickin' huge and slow and require a dual athlon to run.
I don't care if I can mod it, I don't care if you can debug it (there shouldn't be that many in the first place for how much it costs), and I certainly don't care if you think it should be easy for you to program.
Freeware is one thing. A seriously high-end game should run fast and not need a dual athlon.
If Quake4 is released it better play like Q1, or there will be yet another version that I won't play;)
yeah if you enable the remote access bullshit. If I was running it, I wouldn't.
I have service through roadrunner. Seems to me that they are blocking EVERYTHING. I cannot access anything on my computer (no ping, telnet, ssh, ftp, no nothing). Fine w/me. Come get me bitch.;)
Just make sure you don't enable the remote access crap, don't call them for technical support (ask your guru next door), or better yet, don't buy it in the first place.
Who the fuck does MS think that they are putting something in the license that says that they can control what I have on my computer just b/c i use their OS? Excuse me but I own my computer, I own my HD, and I own their OS. They don't own me.
stupid reason? driving 45mph in the left lane, not paying attention to the road, swerving in the lane and not passing the person on the right? how about the person yelling into the phone "I am going home right now, blah blah blah" while walking home from class. Or my personal favorie -- the person calling everyone they know but not getting anyone. Probably just to try to look cool and use their cell phone.
cell phones are worthless when used by idiots. they are not toys. don't use them like one.
my parents have a grandfather clock that needs to be "recharged" ever 7 days or so by pulling down long weights inside the base of the clock...
I find that TERRIBLY annoying. I could even imagine having to make sure that the damn thing was charged.
(as a side note: I don't wear watches, I find no need for them, I hate them almost as much as I hate cell phones and their users)
What good is a clock if it doesn't set itself automatically (ala over the net) and it needs to have new batteries (recharged) more often than every several years?
I can't even remember what I had for dinner last night nevermind that I need to re-charge my clock every 6 hours or whatever...
is that like you telling us your usually unwelcome opinions that are normally completely different from just about everyone here?
I really can't understand why you were asked for an interview Jon. Don't get me wrong, I understand that you post occasional articles on one of the most popular sites on the web but I don't see you as any sort of newsworthy source.
I have found plenty of GREAT information on the web. I am currently doing a research paper on the Cuban Missile Crisis and you would not believe the massive amount of information that is available online (declassified CIA documents, etc).
I definitly believe that people are turning more and more to the web for instantaneous news updates and research material but I seriously doubt that many people believe that EVERYONE is a real journalist.

maybe you should post w/your name instead of being a little shit and ripping someone apart. Think about that.
I forgot to think and never started again.

Go back and cry to yourself, not to us.
give terrorists ideas? excuse me but are you confused w/what Hollywood does? ID4 is a prime example. Air Force One another one.
Give me a break. Not all of us fall for that liberal rhetoric bullshit. Games don't cause violence. People cause it.
Ideas from video games, sheesh.

I do applaud the effort though

they are expensive, proprietary, and lack freedom.
/. readers -- one in the same I guess on most levels hehe)
;)
that's what most Linux users have against any software/hardware/OS. (or is that most
Yes, they are probably the best source for professional audio but the cost of an Intel based machine w/Linux is far better than a Mac.
Money is everything. I wonder if the RIAA uses Macs,

and to think. I renamed all my MP3s to "riaa-can-eat-me.mp3" ;)
;)
thank god for ID3 tags
It says "host cannot be reached, click OK to continue"
:)
yay. It only took me 10s w/Netscape to find the message
but then that would end the /. effect! What the hell, that would be as bad as removing "first post".
Oh wait.
why not spend $10 on a copy of Office from my college (or have a college student buy it for you) and upgrade to OfficeXP for the same?
Saved myself $10 and S&H.

yes, MS spread the seeds of this and their own crap is helping it grow.
