Or better yet, not talk about their new product until it's actually out the door, which IBM had to do for a long time under their consent decree with the DOJ, since they used to regularly abuse their monopoly power in the mainframe market by claiming their new mainframe would have millions of new features that their competitors never even dreamed of and would be out in just one more year.
Should Sony have to abide by this as well (even though both aren't under the specific sanctions that IBM was)? It would be nice wouldn't it?
We whine when they delay and push back release dates of their OS over and over again but when they finally do come out with something "on time" (whatever that means) and it's not up to par we give them shit.
So they can't win. Everyone knew that already but seriously it's not going to cost them anything.
Consider their "limited release numbers" early adoption beta testing. They got them out there into the real world without having to give the units away and now they are getting the feedback they need to add to the new "revisions" that will still be out before the PS3.
It's a good thing though, the *only* reason I could ever see purchasing an XBox with Live would be for racing online. Now that I can't do that I might as well wait for Gran Turismo 5 on the PS3 w/o network play;)
If you look at my recent journal post you'll see that those that had the best opportunities to "help" Slashdot become "better" were ignored repeatedly until even *I*, the Slashdot loving whore that I was, gave up.
Zonk has a personal vendetta against anyone that defies his "vision" for Slashdot. His vision apparently includes posting duplicates to spite those that are just trying to help and blatantly ignoring those that are paying to try and make Slashdot better.
Slashdot doesn't give a fuck and neither should we.
I understand completely why you guys warn us to "not try this at home". But who warns you guys?
They aren't the ones risking their lives! It's the poor dummy Mortimer! Any dummy that's easy enough to coerce to hop out of a plane using only an inflatable life raft as a "floatation" device to drift to the ground isn't very smart.
I hope that Mortimer has a great life insurance policy!
Good Job France -- seems that the French/Freedom fry equality is true - they really do stand for freedom.
Oh good grief! This is a software decision for a single city's desktops. You are really going to try to Karma Whore with likening it to real war where people are getting killed?
How can you stay neutral when one side is funding your research?
This isn't something that I think can be answered as no matter what he says most of the readership here won't believe him (myself included).
Regardless of any study *I* have interpreted data for, I'm always looking to slant it in *my* favor. There's no way that *any* one person is able to present a set of data, paid for or not, in a neutral manner.
Even if they can, we won't believe them unless it's for our side;)
I'll just wait for Mario to snap and enter "Grand Theft Auto: Mario's Revenge"
For some reason I just don't think that tossing turtle shells will suffice in GTA;) The Princess, naked and not cartoonish, would be a nice addition in one of the expansion packs though;)
Consider a jury: 12 people too stupid(*) to get out of jury selection wonder why the scientific evidence is so bad.
While this is off-topic, I'm surprised you were modded up with that flame of a comment. I'm no fan of jury duty, along with everyone else, but it is that duty that gives some people a fair trial. In a time of lessening freedom I'm surprised that anyone would talk like that!
If you're talking about the hardships that certain counties place on their jurors, then we're discussing something else entirely.
As long as they portray it as bad parenting and idiotic kids acting out bits from a video game. Or a book. Or a movie. It's how you portray it.
Well sadly, TV episodes based on activities that happen elsewhere in *reality*, aren't always true to the way it really happens and even go so far as to completely misrepresent the way things are. Take for instance the recent episode of Law and Order: Criminal Intent (5/8/05) that included a bit on geocaching that misrepresented it as cache containers being buried and requiring a shovel to retrieve.
geocaching.com (the largest of the cache listing services) had to post something about it on the main page because of all the parks districts that might become offended if they believed that cachers were out in the woods with shovels:
Geocaching was featured on Law & Order: Criminal Intent this evening, May 8. Contrary to the creative license taken by the show's writers, we strictly do not list caches that are buried.
The TV shows will take whatever liberties they can to make it sell well, regardless of the possibile outcomes for those that actually partake in the *real world* activities.
No, I can't blame Tivo for the wireless speeds but it still surprises me that 50% of Tivo users are utilizing this particular transfer method.
Keep in mind, it is already doing some level of transcoding when transfering clips from Tivo computer, so it makes sense that transfers to iPod would not be too much worse.
I'm sure that it won't be much worse but with the transfers already being greater than real-time any additional time spent sucks:(
I wonder how long before it will be that the same places that outlaw talking on a cellphone while driving have to add iPods to that list? I've never been in a situation where I needed to watch tv so bad that I felt I had to carry one around with me everywhere.
You've never been in a situation where you might want to listen to music or catch up on some TV? I am all the time... Sometimes I bring along a book (which depending on the novel is usually more bulky than my Archos) or sometimes I chat, catch up on e-mail/forums, or surf the web from my Sidekick, but if I *know* I'm going to be waiting a long time (i.e. I'm at the dealership having something done to my car) I'm going to catch up on the shows that I would have watched on Saturday evening.
I'd rather utilize wasted time wasting more time by catching up with the week's TV episodes than sitting there bored. I'm more of a evening reader anyway. That's me though.
More than 50 percent of TiVo's 3.6 million subscribers have tried TiVoToGo, and nearly half use it regularly, Denney said. The number of regular users was higher than TiVo expected, and "it was surprising to us, to be honest,'' he said.
Based on how slow the transfers are for Tivo2Go I too am surprised that Tivo has that many people using it. Granted, I was only using it over wireless but I assume that's what most of the Tivo2Go users are using as well. It was taking *more* than real-time to transmit a show to the computer and then I had to run it through Dr. Divx to bring it down to a resolution that would play well on my mobile device. Will this automated transcoding process increase the time it takes to put it on the handheld even more?
I have mentioned before that I use the "Record to VCR" option to put shows on my mobile device as I have an Archos that will automatically record it in the best fit option if I so choose... Yeah, it's real time and it's a pain but it was actually faster and easier than using Tivo2Go. Being that I've moved to the DirecTivo I no longer have the Tivo2Go option (with a stock unit) so I am happy to use Record to VCR for now.
Perhaps its due to the fact you can maximize profits by having your price vs demand combination maximized...
No, it's because downloaded music can have the price set by the backend and it can respond automatically to trends. Why the hell wouldn't they start jacking the price on a single that for whatever reason got popular overnight (i.e. Kayne West after his public display of moronacy).
If they have everything set to a 99 cent pricepoint they can't gouge their buyers like they can if they have a "flexible" pricepoint.
You were right about it having to do with economics though.
Shhh. They can hear you when you post here! If you think that they won't push to "outlaw" all older technology that doesn't have "safe-guards" in place, you're crazy. While they might not win that doesn't mean they won't try everything in their power, including their increasingly successful smear campaigns, to get you to turn over your contraband.
X-Box has replayability simply due to the fact that you can play the same game over and over online and get a new experience everytime.
You know, it really depends on the game. To this day I can still fire up a game of Gran Turismo I and be just as happy with it as the first 104958215335 races I played. While I wouldn't mind online play I'm certainly not going to go about it via Microsoft's implementation (a pay-for network).
While I think that his language is a bit inflammatory, I think that it is something that needs to be done.
Well, I guess he can't win huh? It's difficult being in his position. He wants the work to get done and he wants to make people happy. I guess him saying, "People always complain that I'm being too soft. Not so this time," is the result of all the grief he puts up with.
Just let it go as long as the patches still come in;)
Either way, I know that there'd be a ton of people such as myself who would use it to avoid the glut of crappy fake-journalist blogs.
Why? Depending what you were searching for (especially local establishments that aren't chains) you might come across personal websites or blogs that offer far more informative listings for various businesses than you would find anywhere else.
Yeah, you may not want to hear my comments about a particular location, but you can at least be safe in the knowledge that regardless of the lack of a Google search presence for a particular location, you will likely find the link (if it exists) for any number of local places.
I believe that when you search for a local pizza place in my area (Carbone's Pizza Lakeville) you will find me first (with a link to their URL) and then 19 spots down you will find them, sorta...
From the beginning, people have talked about building an Internet that wouldn't depend upon the TLD hierarchy. It doesn't mean there would be two or three Internets, but that you would have a domain name system that wouldn't depend upon hierarchical naming. As long as there's coordination across hierarchies about ownership of domain names, you wouldn't necessarily produce any destructive results. One could query a hierarchy for the answer to the question "Who owns Lessig.com?" and then ask another hierarchy if we don't get an answer from the first one. So it is possible for different systems to evolve that would allow the Europeans to control one part and the Americans to control another without destroying the ability of the Internet to continue to function the way it does now.
Well of course that's the way it works (and likely would work regardless off government INTERFERENCE) which is why none of this shit matters. The issue that the EU has with the Internet being "handled" via a US non-profit is only problem with authority and control.
The EU wants to have its hands in everything instead of leaving it the fuck alone.
So, if they end up getting their wish and fracture the Internet, some work around will be created to bypass their bullshit control issue and everything will function as always. If not, because they somehow thwart reconnection attempts, then we'll all be fucked over because of jealousy, greed, and stupidity.
Sounds more American controlled than ever, doesn't it?
Make that 63 shows the first month and 14 thereafter and now you are required to have 217 for the year (regardless) because of their mandatory 1 year service agreement.
I'm not saying it's not a good idea to own a Tivo, I'm just offering the cost associated with Tivo.

How about 1GB with WAV files?
Perhaps they should add this to their Errors and Corrections area ;-)
Whatever, Mortimer, Buster, Foo, AKAImBatman, etc ;) All the same ;)
