My idea is to provide an online database of a shows total duration and the when and how long the commercials are. This is communicates with a client video player. When the client records a tv show, meta data is stored about the shows channel, time it was broadcast and show name.
A user can then watch the show and mark when commercials begin and end. This information is sent to the server's database.
That data is then available to everyone who has recorded that show. They can choose to skip over previsouly defined commercials or watch the entire recorded video stream.
It would have to have a decent userbase to be useful, but I've seen worse ideas come to life.:-)
Could this be argued as a violation of 8th ammendment rights?
If he has rich parents, then sure. If not, he'll rot in jail and come out a hateful, hardened criminal
As an aside I want to go into a movie theater with an empty camcorder (no tape). Would I still be committing a crime? Could I go to jail? Would it even make it to trial?
The name Commodore carries so little marketing power among non techies. Maybe the occasional person will remember using a commodore a long time ago, but most likely they will equate the name with old technology.
If you don't like this law, use your vote to show that.
Um...Wasn't this bill passed unanimously? That would lead me to believe that it would be quite hard to vote for someone who didn't support this bill.
I would love to take a hollow shell of a camcorder into a movie theater and get arrested for this crime. I just don't want to be convicted, which I fear might actually happen...
We tried to convert the nation to the metric several times. In the 70's the metric system was touted as the wave of the future and soon everything would be metric. That never happened. It probably won't for a long long time, if ever. We simply have no use for a simple system. A complex one is somehow perceived as better solely on the basis that it is most common.
I've always wanted to pretend to be President Bush's spokesperson during a gathering of reporters.
According to President Bush, President Bush has never made a mistake. Also, should a mistake be made, President Bush will be unable to recall the mistake or any events that happened before and after said mistake. President Bush also would like you to know that any fact brought forth must meet with President Bush's approval. Failure of the fact to be approved makes the fact false. Only President Bush approved facts will be considered truthful.
Of course...I don't know if I want to be killed as an "enemy combatant"

Here's my prediction: When the PDA market dries up and dies, Apple will revive the Newton. They axed the Newton just when PDAs were catching on... (a sour former Netwon user who misses the 2100)
What if you are arrested but innocent and subsequently not convicted of the original crime you were arrested for? Would they have to destroy the sample?
Perhaps some cop looking for a promotion would just plant some DNA evidence at the scene to make sure you get convicted.
I'd have to say if a cop told me to give him a DNA sample, I'd respond "blow me":-)
Two of my friends have Canon Digital Rebels. We built a small rig using wood and machine screws that allows us to position the cameras side by side, lenses pointing slightly inward.
It gives us some pretty cool stereo graphic images. The only way I've found to get a true color 3D image is to put both images side by side, then look at their center cross eyed. Is there a better way?
I have to listen to this damn song a couple of times a day at work. For those of you lucky enough not to have heard it...the lyrics go something like this:
You take me out and pay for it
I tell you things you're gonna get
When it comes time to screw
I say not with you!
I can lie take your money and cheat
But don't treat me like a piece of meat!
Don't tell me what to do!
I'm going to go have sex with your abusive friend in a week or two.
Clothing: Nearly all laundry detergents contain a fluorescent dye that emits strongly in the blue when exposed to sunlight. The blue light counteracts the yellow tinge of old or incompletely cleaned clothing and thus makes clothes appear cleaner than they really are. The dye is designed to fluoresce in daylight.
The industry calls them optical brighteners. It's what they put in color safe bleach. Color safe bleach is really a misnomer, since it's not actually bleach, nor does it truly get the clothes any cleaner...it just gives the illusion of cleaner colors.
Your criticisms are almost unjustified because the two products serve different market segments.
My friends often listen to music on their iBooks while sitting on the couch, they currently have a long speaker cable from the audio out to their stereo system. They will buy this in a second.
I'll be grabbing one as a wireless printer server and WiFi extender.
Did anyone else not see this product coming? It completely caught me by surprise/
Now just who is going to buy this, a player that you can't let your mom or girlfriend (ok, that's not a problem for Slashdotters) or colleague borrow, that you can't use if your hand's in a cast or even in a glove (nobody plays MP3s on cold days?)?
Everyone will buy it, when no alternatives exist. How many DVD players out there can skip through the non skippable previews on some DVDs? What's the technical reason for that inability, there isn't one.
It will eventually be government mandated like HDTV recorders not recording in HD...

They have a DV drive that you can plug into a FireWire camera and record straight to the hard drive. I want one, but I haven't been able to find any reviews on the product so I'm reluctant to spend $700.
I was waiting for something like this. I wonder how reliable something like this would be if left on/used as a main drive for extended periods of time.
I tried to call 911 a week ago to report a car accident on the highway. I was standing within visible range of a cell tower, yet the call took over 10 rings to answer. After someone picked up, I reported the accident...but they said, "oh, I'm going to have to transfer you, that isn't in our area." My phone rung another 7 times before I got anyone on the line, who dispatched someone after having me repeat the situation twice.
I'm glad no one was seriously hurt, otherwise those 17 rings could have been really bad.
I don't think the feds are technically literate, but I also don't think they're fools. I have a hard time believing they charged someone with downloading kiddie-porn when all that really happened was he saw some pop-ups
I have a hard time believing our government invaded a country to get rid of weapons that never existed..stranger things have happened.

I do a fair amount of video editing and image manipulation, even still my two year old computer works fast enough for me...
Does the average Joe need the computing power they are given?
