  1. Re:The Fix on Is StarCraft II Killing Graphics Cards? · · Score: 1

FTA: "The between-mission scenes onboard Jim Raynor's ship aren't framerate capped. These are fairly static scenes, and don't take much work for the graphics card to display them. Because of this, the card renders the scene as quickly as possible, which then taxes your graphics card as it works to its full potential. It may sound illogical, but redrawing the same image over and over again can put just as much stress on a graphics processor as running a game like Crysis with everything cranked up."

This doesn't make a whole lot of sense, still sounds illogical to me.

My understanding of video cards is they see changes on the screen and renders the changes. This is why first person shooters, where the entire screen has to be rendered every frame because when you move the entire scene changes, requires a much better video card then a real time strategy like Starcraft, where the entire map would be static except for the few people that are moving around.

Now they're saying a static screen, essentially a menu screen, is causing video cards to go nuts and heat up because they're trying to render the few things that are moving around? I understand that there's no framerate cap, so it's just going nuts trying to redraw a blinking light, but that's still just a small 20x20 pixel blinking light compared to the 1980x1200 screen that Crysis requires redrawing with every step, 50 times a second.

Maybe these are very old cards that are having issues because modern cards will lower the GPU clock speed if they see nothing going on so there's even less of a chance of overheating.

  2. Re:Yeah... on Electric Car Subsidies As Handouts For the Rich · · Score: 4, Interesting

"Even if the car is electric, they still will not save money in terms of the total cost of ownership, over buying a regular old car that's fuel efficient. Look at things like the Chevy Volt versus a Toyota Corolla. Even assuming no gas, ever, the Corolla is still more affordable."

Same could be said about the Prius but look how well they're selling.
    2010 Prius MSRP = $22800 to $28070
    2010 Corolla MSRP = $15,450 to $20,150

    Price difference = $7350 to $7920 = $7635 average

    Prius mpg = 51/48 = 49.5 mpg average
    Corolla mpg = 26/34 = 30 mpg average

    195,000 miles / 49.5mpg x $3 average per gallon = $11,818 dollars
    195,000 miles / 30mpg x $3 average per gallon = $19,500 dollars
    $19,500 - $11,818 = $7682.

So basically, you'd have to drive 195,000 miles in a Prius to break even compared to the price of a Corolla. Until you surpass 195,000 miles the Corolla would have saved money.

This also doesn't figure the interest you could make on $7,682 while you're driving your Prius to reach 195,000 miles. If it takes 10 years to reach 195,000 miles that $7,682 at 5% interest would be $12,513.17.

In summary, the new Corolla will always be better than the new Prius. Of course this is assuming you're deciding between the two cars comparing gas prices only, not size of vehicle, status, smugness, etc.

I see from their website that they offer a online payment gateway which is nice but I actually don't want customers to enter credit cards on my website.

By using Paypal or Google Checkout or Amazon Payments I'm sending the customers to a website they do trust and they are familiar with and they will give them their credit card number.

and I thought of some more:
    4) instant access to funds using the Paypal debit card.
    5) 800 number where I can speak to a real person when I have a problem. Doesn't happen often but when the account is frozen (again) I want a real live person to tell me why ASAP

someone mentioned Amazon Payments which might be a great alternative since everyone's heard of Amazon and Amazon's fees are the exact same as Paypal's fees, 0 to $3,000.00 USD = 2.9% + $0.30 USD per transaction

This also meant that the court avoided a more far-reaching "look and feel copyright" precedent ruling. However, the case did establish that the analytic dissection (rather than the general "look and feel") of a user interface is vital to any copyright decision on such matters. In 1997, five years after the lawsuit was decided, all lingering infringement questions against Microsoft regarding the Lisa and Macintosh GUI as well as Apple's "QuickTime piracy" lawsuit against Microsoft were settled in direct negotiations. Apple agreed to make Internet Explorer their default browser, to the detriment of Netscape. Microsoft agreed to continue developing Microsoft Office and other software for the Mac over the next five years. Microsoft also purchased $150 million of non-voting Apple stock, helping Apple in its financial struggles at the time. Both parties entered into a patent cross-licensing agreement."

See the "Microsoft also purchased"? Wasn't really part of the lawsuit, it just "also" happened in 1997 "helping Apple in its financial struggles at the time". Apple was a sinking ship and Microsoft rescued them.

What's wrong with Microsoft helping Apple? Why can't anyone just admit what really happened? The news confirms it.
