First I was personally responsible for destroying America cause I'm gay. Now they want my Xbox too? Well they can pry GTA-SA outta my cold, dead hands.
Of the various test machines we have have put Service Pack 2 on we have had mixed results. All of the desktop machines we have tested had at least one or more repeatable "issues". None of which we found to be completely unfixable (with the exception of a nasty WiFi problem with Broadcom chipsets).
The reason we are not deploying SP2 right now is what happens when you install it on a laptop. No less that 2/3rds of the laptop test models took massive performance hits. At the moment we haven't been able to locate the exact cause and as such are simply shelfing SP2 for the time being.
Anyone else had the notebook performance problem with SP2?
Well shit. I was born, raised, and went to college in Arkansas, then I moved to Miami so I could find work. Now your telling me my job is going to be outsourced to where I came from?
GOD! Life isn't fair.
On the upside, I could always move back. I already speak the local language.

I'm a programmer by trade, and I know all of these things, and I use Firefox. Am I dumb? Apparently not.
Congratulations.
I know nothing about motor mechanics; if my car develops a fault, I take it to a garage. Am I dumb now?
Knowing nothing about the mechanics of such an expensive piece of machinery is a quick way to get ripped off. Even compared to a JiffyLube for $20, you can save half by doing it yourself. I may be a network consultant, but I am quite comfortable seeing to the needs of my own automobile and have in the past changed everthing from oil, to spark plugs, to alternators, to oxygen sensors. None of which are as difficult as I or other might have imagined. Pick up a tear-down manual for your car at AutoZone for about $14 and knock yourself out.
I know nothing about building. If I needed an extension built, or a wall knocked through, or whatever, I'd go to a builder. Am I dumb now?
Construction is another area of greatly marked up labor. Basic engineering principles are easy to master and will save you thousands. I learned most of mine working on a low-slope/commercial/industrial roofing crew in the summers in college. I have also picked up carpentry, mansonary, and electrical along the way. Trust me, DIY projects will save you loads of cash and are not difficult to master. Start small, work you way up. That hole in the sheetrock you have a picture hung over is a nice small place to start learning. The most satisfying project I have completed are the two walk-in closets in my master bedroom complete with loads of built-ins.
I know nothing about teaching. I may know the subject, but I know nothing about planning and preparing lessons, setting homework, or keeping a class full of students interested and engaged. Am I dumb now?
I am not a "teacher" but I tutored people in college and also created the format for a 2-week summer computer camp that introducted K thru 4th graders to basic computer concepts. I can say without a doubt I learned more while teaching other people than I ever learned while other people were teaching me.
Because by extending your reasoning to other fields, I am, and so are you, and everyone else here.
People here need to stop being so elitist, and denigrating people just because they know less about computers than some arbitrarily determined minimum level below which the person must be "dumb".
It is not elitest to say someone is far from well rounded. Specialization is the autobaun to obsoletion. My social circle includes no other "computer people" but I have taken the time to learn wines (nice course at a local university), cigars (even though I don't smoke them more than VERY RARLY, being able to talk to an aficionado is a great way to start a conversation with them, a possible future client). I am not inclined to follow pop culture but I read People, US, etc., so I have something to chat up those interested in it about. I have picked up on while living in Miami Beach, Haute Couture, Haute Cuisine, styles of Architechture (followed that through with an Architechture Lecture at a local university, facinating stuff, Miami Beach is the only place you will find Tropical Deco), furniture design, more sports than I can count, and having a best friend that is a film festival coordinator I have learned a load of things (namely occupations) that I never imagined existed. I never knew existed. Computer People need to expand thier world to other things (and that doesnt mean reading about it on the computer, that's cheating, get outside) and non-Computer savvy people most definatly need to learn more about computers as they are a tidal wave on the horizon that will (more than now even) infultrate the very fabric of their existence. I by no means think that I am even close to well rounded, I have a long ways to go before I can begin to consider resting. It is, however, unforgivable for a person to *choose* to remain ignorant.
Leonardo Da Vinci never announced "I'm an artist, what do I care about engineering?"
C-span carried live feeds of the debates online. In fact, if you are inclined to watch the tediously boring day-to-day goings-on of our government's inner workings, you can practically OD on the various live feeds 24/7 at C-Span, C-Span2, C-Span3, or C-Span Radio.
On the occasion that I have been inclined to watch I have found their streams to be clear and of high quality (your tax dollars at work).
Last time I watched their feeds was a Presidential State of the Union Address. I found the forums to be filled with the expectedly colorful people, albiet conversing on a slightly higher plane than many online politcal forums.
You apparently did not appreciate the beauty of the CS layout. If you were searching for a specific product you simply flipped to the back, looked up device X in the product index, and every page number with an ad involving product X would be listed.
I'm sure the Space Center is an important national treasure, but I am more concerned about the lives of the people here, including my own. I wish the space shuttles well, please wish me well. I will be leaving for a shelter when the mandatory evacuation begins in 30 minutes. I'll be saying my prayers for all the rest of you Floridians, and hope to see everyone back here in a few days.
I think I'm going to cry. I was trying the Gmail Machine lotto. . . I was hitting refresh so fast all I saw was a blink of a page with a big yellow font that said "Winner!" with a text entry box below it. Then 1/5 of a second later, I tapped my touch pad and the page refreshed. I think I need a moment of reflection.
I'm not sure why many people find it suprising that Microsoft plans to enter the anti-virus market. If anything I am suprised that they do not plan to bundle it. Microsoft included an anti-virus tool in MS-DOS 6.2 and above, but never included one with Windows95 and above.
Several people here complained that the unit could only act as a bluetooth headset for a cellular telephone but could not transfer files via bluetooth. Mind you that the speed bluetooth runs at would be painful for moving more than a couple songs, but, here is a bluetooth player about the size of the Diva GEM. The Xlive player takes full advantage of bluetooth's capabilities. Xlive XBM-100 512MB Bluetooth MP3 Player There are three sizes, 128, 256, and 512. Like the Diva it allows recording of FM Radio. It does not allow the use of an SD card like the Diva. Its one greatest feature, IMHO, is that when used as a bluetooth headset to your phone it can record your telephone conversations.
As a consultant with a two hour minimum, I personally thought those turbo buttons were a God-send. I have billed a two hour minimum, after two seconds work, many times for a machine that simply "started running really slow all of a sudden."
My dad has a KLH 286 he uses to run his business. I bought him a 2Ghz Celeron eMachine and he won't give up his 286. I cringe everytime I see him boot that thing into DOS and churn out bid proposals on his Tandy 9-pin printer.
It just goes to show you, you don't have to have the fastest or fanciest machine to get the job done. Sometimes, however, it is good to realize that the screaching eyesore in your office is ready for the grave. (I mean really, have you ever trying to have a conversation next to a wide-carriage dot-matrix printer.)
Tottally the eyes. They look glass. The first thing I noticed was the too perfect eyes, there is no red in the whites and they just look like glass eyes. They succeeded in turning a friendly old man into someone I would cross the street to avoid.
American courts tend to lean toward freedom of speech and the first amemenment right. I would say sueing for libel is a much more British thing to do. Thier libel laws are far more entertaining. Just ask Oscar Wilde.
Also if Ken Brown continues to publicly assert that Torvalds stole ideas and/or code, and it can be proven that he did not. That is libel.

The BlackBerry is popular because it is NOT a computing device. The people using them are most certainly not the Slashdot crowd. They are white collar professionals in an enterprise enviroment. The dozen or so of my friends that carry them have few computer skills and are managers and such at various companies. Also, amoung my friends, none of them chose thier blackberry. They were given one by thier company so they would have a cell phone and now also company email whereever they are. The PDA market is still so small, outside of tech circles few people actually use them. As far as smart phones go, everyone over the age of 45 that I have shown one to got that deer-in-the-headlights oh-god-not-more-technology look. There is a reason LG is making a killing selling monochrome phones with only a couple cheesy games and an addressbook.
I was once definatly on the market for something just like this. The major problem with this device is lack of starch and creases. In Miami I was paying $3.50 per shirt and $3.00 for slacks, that adds up fast. Five dress shirts a week for work, two or three more for dinners and such on the weekends, plus dry cleaning for knit shirts worn out to clubs and such. I got excited when I saw the headline, but the actual machine is useless. If it only cost $1700 and could replace going to the cleaners it would be worth it. Because believe me, there is a reason its called "being taken to the cleaners". However, as luck would have it, my boyfriend got a job recently that pays for his dry cleaning. Since we wear the same size clothes, I just toss my shirts and slacks in with his pile.:-)
I remember from some class in college that automatic washing machines and the such are indeed robots. The instructor defined a robot as a device that could accomplish a preprogrammed task yet had enough awareness of the world around it to recognize error states and request human intervention. By this example, your washing machine is a robot because once started will wash, rinse and spin dry your clothes. It will adjust the mix of hot and cold water to meet a desired temperature, and stop if the lid is opened or it determines the drum is off balance. Everything is there, automated actions, a few sensors for awareness of real world conditions, and the ability to determine when things have really fouled up.
Never forget the real reason VHS had immediate success. Video Home System allowed porn on thier format. Sony did not allow porn on Betamax. Like it or not, to see where technology is headed, just follow the boobies.
The answer is: develop our own technologies, and ship them before Microsoft ships theirs. Make a lot of noise to get people to notice. By the time Microsoft gets its technology out, me must have established a solid userbase. Then, we just hope we can stay ahead.
First I was personally responsible for destroying America cause I'm gay. Now they want my Xbox too? Well they can pry GTA-SA outta my cold, dead hands.
I diddn't know Jamie Kellner read Slashdot.

And don't forget that a simple semicolon will do in many situations where you may be tempted to use a whole colon.
