My experience, forced somewhat by my employer, is similar. The free wifi in our facility requires one to click through a EULA and hit an "I Accept" button. Now for some reason, they capture the URL you were attempting to access before the EULA page displays but they then just dump you on the google.com homepage. Since I'm on my iPhone (which if it would just run something in the background keeping the wifi connection active I would only have to do this once a day), I just tap the news tab to see what's happened in the world since I last hit "I Accept" a few minutes ago, and low and behold its the same crap. So shocking that I don't read much of it, nor do I really need to read 5 different takes on the same story.
Regardless there isn't a snowball's chance in hell that I'll pay for an online news subscription, I'll pay for usenet but not for real news.
WTF douchebag, I read TFA and I don't see any "real book" alternative mentioned in the article. Maybe you're the retard that can't read.
I also think it's pretty spurious that the DOJ is involved in dictating how Amazon should make the Kindle more user friendly for visually impaired people. As if the DOJ gives a rat's ass about the needs of the blind, it seems more like they're trying to delay acceptance of the Kindle in higher ed, in order to allow other manufacturers readers to catch up.
Yeah, we have such amazing participation in voting for President, I'm sure people will be running out to the polls to vote for or against current appointees...
Didn't the creators of SouthPark come up with a device that is strikingly similar to your request? "Childtracker" is an unobtrusive child GPS tracking system that fits conveniently on the child's head.
Maybe they'll sell you one.
BTW, as a parent (I know, a slashdot reader that HAS had sex) I understand your frustration with your school district...
I'd just like to add how much the 2.0 and 2.01 firmwares have made the old 2.5g iPhones suck. I have had the "throw this mofo against the wall" experience with my original 2.5g 4gb unit so many times since I made the mistake of upgrading the software to the 2.0/2.01 versions. They both suck.
I use one app at work on my iPhone which has kept me on the 2.01 track (the wheel) and if there was a way to go back to 1.1.4 and keep that one app I'd do it in a heartbeat because this firmware sucks.
My fast, snappy iPhone has turned into an iTurd, thanks to some shitty code that has come out of Cupertino. I think it may be time to short some AAPL.
I agree with all of your statements, the point I'd like to bring up is that given the ridiculous poliferation of cellphone ownership and usage (to the point of elimination of land lines) it seems that somewhere, something would have to give and it definitely is in voice quality/sample rate/etc. due to how many calls are packed into the same (relative) amount of bandwidth we had for analog calls 20 years ago. I still get busy signals where I live, mostly when our area is inundated by vacationers using up all our cellular capacity, and forget about trying to use EDGE after the ski area closes for the afternoon, all the road warriors that are "on vacation" are busting ass in their hotel rooms working...
I remember my bag phone, I thought it was pretty sweet, simply because it worked, but boy I was happy to switch to a Motorola flip phone, it was at least 2" thick and had battery life that was measured in minutes...but it was an improvement over the bag phone at least for weight purposes.
For a lot less money, you can invest in a piece of technology I just bought for snowmobiling, called a "SPOT", it's a pager sized device that sends ok, I need help, and 911 type messages to whomever you designate (except for the 911 message, that's handled by the company behind SPOT).
SPOT uses the globalstar satellite network and has a built in GPS receiver, so it sends coordinates with every message, even the OK messages you can send to your friends and family.
I'd say this is perfect for RV'ers or anyone else that is worried about that emergency breakdown or worse, the MI or significant trauma out in the middle of nowhere.
Best part, the whole thing is browser configurable.
I don't work for SPOT, I don't sell SPOT, I just have one and feel safer. I think it could allay the fears of many people living in the sticks using analog cellular (until Tuesday) as it is a way to communicate with your loved ones and to request help that isn't tethered to ANYBODY's analog or digital network.
I love how this article refers to "This foreign-made camera is one of Osama's eyes in America." A kit Nikon D70? I have the same camera, and last time I took pictures with it, guess what, I DIDN'T send them to Osama. I'll probably be on a watch list now though since I own a digital Nikon.
Show me an American MADE camera, SHOW ME Tristen...I wonder where the car you drive was made? (and I don't mean BUILT)
The thing that gets my goat here is does this person actually believe this clap trap or is she simply looking to get a rise out of the general population of digital electronics consumers that use the internet? Are there Americans that believe this crap?
If so, I am appalled and ashamed for us as a people.:-(
I am an ipod/iphone/macbook/apple whatever owner, and I am amazed that people would pay for tv shows through the itunes store, as as a previous poster mentioned, who wants to watch those little 4:3 videos on an ipod anyway or God forbid, on a TV with all the compression...
It's obvious, the old MS-NBC-Universal connection, try to hurt apple if you don't like the rules, take your ball home and see how much fun the game is...
I think that Apple will be just fine without Universal. I wonder how much digital content (if any) Universal will be selling in the next calendar year without Apple...
Actually, the useful group I was referring to was the group attempting to add 3rd party applications and additional functionality to the iphone vs those trying to simply flash it up with fancy sounds. I'd expect "themeing" from the same group, ultimately.
I don't care how it looks, sounds or smells, I care how it works.
I've found that my t-mobile phone only really works well up the ass when set to vibrate, and then only if it can still get a signal so that someone else can call me so that it rings (vibrates).
I would imagine given Venezuela's lovely political attitude towards American companies, that Apple won't be jumping to make the iPhone available to Venezuela in any hurry.
I hate that bookmarks sidebar, when I sit at one of my users desks to work on their computers it takes everything I have to not close that damn thing if it's open.
I don't know why I despise it, especially how most of the time the browser window is maximized, and many of these users have widescreen LCD's so there's plenty of real estate for the real webpage that is being displayed. I do see it's utility, but there is something so asthetically displeasing to me with that large white bar on the left side of the page. I could go on and on...
Maybe if the vendors of the cheapo throwaway hardware such as most printers would just invest the time to write the drivers for other platforms (OSX, linux) then the cheapo product wouldn't be such a worthless pile of crap in a non windows world.
In Colorado, it is ILLEGAL to run in the left lane unless you are passing. Period. The law was enacted almost a year ago. I'm not sure it's enforced, but thankfully I live far enough away from the city that it's a non-issue. I just wish they'd charge the semi's that block both lanes going 40 up a pass when there is signage stating that the left lane is 55mph MINIMUM...
Good thing I have a fast car and can make up for the lost momentum when I get stuck behind one of these guys, as most of the vehicles around me are screwed after they've lost that uphill momentum.

Sweet use of my tax dollars. Thanks.
How does the kindle discriminate against the blind any more than, say, A BOOK?
Glad you have so much free time. Care to share?
Hmm, then after dinner this evening, I am set. Thank you Jimmy Dean!
I must be prescient then...lucky me!
You've stumped Slashdot. Bravo!
Maybe you could rent a corner of your kingdom to AT&T and they could put a tower on it, just for you!
Maybe they'll sell you one.

Strong research work my friend. Too bad Wikileaks wasn't able to replicate said research before "leaking" this onto the internets...
Heh heh.

Well, I just rocked over a cd installer for my daughter's "Barbie digital camera" and guess what, it broke.
Don't keep those backups on the floor!

I guess they get their wheels from the same people making those crappy casters for shopping carts all over the world.

Heck, I don't find this to be "funny" at all, in fact, it's probably +1 insightful or +5 duh not a surprise...
I find it ironic that the mac iphone users and windows iphone users have already been divided into two camps already, the useful and the useless.
Anyway, enjoy your iphone. I enjoy mine.
I've found that my t-mobile phone only really works well up the ass when set to vibrate, and then only if it can still get a signal so that someone else can call me so that it rings (vibrates).

You sir are correct. We are "pirating Mac OS X anyway" and we are enjoying your spirited discussion.
