Except that it's not when it's not reading the DVD drive. Playing streamed video or XBLA games do not use the drive so it's very quiet. Also, do you play with the volume set to 1 out of 10? I play at a "normal" volume level and the only time I notice the drive noise is when I start a game and when I finish and go to the Dashboard and it spins down.

I am 40 years old. I had a wood-grain pong unit. I have played almost every console out there. Have been PC gaming for years as well. Gaming is better period. We have more options than ever before. I can now play with friends and family remotely. I can download games instead have to go to a B&M store. The quality of games is better now as well. Higher budgets and production values don't automatically mean a better game, but it helps and when a game is well done it's still as much fun to play as any game in the past. The list goes on. I tire of these "things were better when" articles. Even if they were, we live in the present, not the past. Grow up and move on.

  4. Re:Sony is behind, difficult to catch up on PS3 Breaks Records in UK Launch · · Score: 1

Why the hell would GTA, RE5, DMC4, etc go back to Sony only after they have announced 360 versions? Why would any publisher leave that kind of money on the table? Sony couldn't afford to pay the amount they'd need to to keep those exclusive or they already would have. Your reasoning makes no sense.

  5. Wii and 360 on PS3 Breaks Records in UK Launch · · Score: 1

If anyone thinks the Wii and 360 couldn't have posted similar numbers if they had the supply they are kidding themselves. The fact that Sony sold this amount and stores still have stock on the shelves is just as much of a story.

The last time I owned a beige PC was about 5 years ago. Then again, it doesn't surprise me that an Apple fan has blinders on and can't see anything postive outside the RDF. When I need to I will buy a Mac and not because it's pretty, but because it does something that I can't do on my PC. I have yet to run into that scenario, so until then I'll keep using my PC to do the media work that I have been doing for 8 years now without having a Mac.

  8. Re:Really? on "Market Share" "Installed Base" and Consumer Electronics · · Score: 1

Typical Mac user reply. I can only hope your post is some kind of sarcastic parody and not the Jobs fellating tirade that it appears to be. Jobs is a megalomaniac (as history has shown), he just happens to be a megalomaniac with smart people working around him, just like Gates. That's the biggest talent the two men share, picking the right people. You see Jobs as some kind of tech saviour and it's a joke, he's a CEO of a tech company and his bottom line is what matters the most no matter how much you talk about beauty. If Apple stopped making money Jobs would be tossed by the shareholders like yesterday's trash.

  9. Re:Really? on "Market Share" "Installed Base" and Consumer Electronics · · Score: 1

It's called the "Reality Distortion Field" and Mac users are well aquainted with it. They cherry pick stats to make Apple look great, but it's okay when they do it. However, let a Windows user do the same thing and "blood will rain from the sky". It's the usual MS hate that is acceptable here on Slashdot. It's humorous because they think that if Apple was the dominant force in the PC market that they'd be some benevolent corporation that only thinks of the children. The way I see it, if Mac had the same postion MS does they'd have had even more DOJ investigations than MS because they produce the hardware too. Also, Jobs comes across as very arrogant and if he had the power he'd be even worse than Gates IMO.

  11. Re:Ubuntu Studio on OSS Music Composer Gaining Attention · · Score: 1

Please explain how the OSS apps you mentioned are more flexible than say Pro Tools, Vegas or Sonar? The OSS apps are missing support for some sound cards, file types, and other things like ReWire, etc. Sure, you could prgram your own features in, but that is fraction of the percentage of the market for apps like that. So, in the end they are harder to use and have less to offer. Not really a good choice in my opinion.

  12. Still not up to par on OSS Music Composer Gaining Attention · · Score: 1

As much as I think OSS is cool adn all, I still haven't found any OSS that comes close to matching the features, speed, and/or ease of use of the commercial applications I use like Pro Tools, Sound Forge, Reason, Live, Vegas, etc. I have tried pretty well every app I could find and they were either lacking in features or the UI was so unruly that it would take months to be comfortable enough to work at a decent pace. For applications like this OSS programmers/designers are really going to have to work hard to win people over. A lot of musicians out there are still terrified of tech and if there is no way they are going to use some of these apps because they just aren't newbie friendly.

Console resolutions are very comparable to PCs as is the hardware. If Valve's hardware surveys are any indication the PS3 and 360 are far and away better equipped than most gaming PCs out there.

Since when does making something popular trump inventing it? It really bugs me when fanboys take this approach. This is similar to the way mainstream media treat the iPod like it was the first MP3 player. Hell, I had a Samsung MP3 phone years before the iPod came out. Taking something mainstream takes good marketing and Apple knows how to do that. Do they have the market cornered on PC innovation? No way. They "borrow" ideas just as much as any company out there. I also find it funny that when MS "steals" Apple's ideas it's bad mojo, but when the same ideas are "borrowed" for Linux then it's all fine and dandy.
