  1. Nice fonts! on New Longhorn Screenshots And Schedule · · Score: 4, Interesting

This proves that the Longhorn fonts news from Poynter was right, at least. The type in the screenshots looks particularly good, especially compared to XP. Perhaps XP will catch up (or exceed?) OS X in terms of font rendering? Corbel (I think that's the main sans-serif in these screenshots, look at the 'g's) and Calibri are gorgeous screen fonts. A significant improvement over the current XP Tahoma and Verdana fest.

  3. Re:Cash is better in grocery stores on Identity Theft Victim Gets Last Laugh · · Score: 1

ATM transactions at banks (even if they're not your own) are free in the UK. However, ATMs in stores, etc, are all part of an independent (commercial) network. I believe the most expensive one is in some club in London, supposedly $20 per withdrawal.

  4. So which store would sell this anyway? on Microsoft's Tips for Buying an MP3 Player · · Score: 4, Insightful

Some obscure indie rock tune or rare jazz performance you heard on the radio? You might have to shop at more than one store before you find the song you're looking for.

Rare jazz performance? Sure, I often want stuff like that, but why would I buy it off of an online digital music store? Nearly every store supplies its songs in a mediocre 128kbps-ish format, generally sub-par to the equivalent LAME encoded 128kbps VBR MP3. Why would I want jazz, with all its high-hats and dynamic range, in an uber-low quality format? Britney Spears' new single, sure.. but jazz??

And don't say AllOfMp3.com (who have changed CC processor to someone else)..

  5. Re:Cash is better in grocery stores on Identity Theft Victim Gets Last Laugh · · Score: 1

This is not so true in the UK. ATMs are prevalent, but most insist on charging you about $2-$3 per transaction. This is not worthwhile. Furthermore, most are outdoors, and I certainly don't like getting cash out in front of others.

Not sure why privacy is screamed so much. If I was up to something or had some kooky/kinky interest, sure, but I only ever buy regular groceries. Privacy is important, sure.. but they could figure out literally nothing from my purchase history.

  6. Nah, cards++ on Identity Theft Victim Gets Last Laugh · · Score: 4, Insightful

Cash can be stolen and used easily. Cards can be stolen and used, but you can get the money back. Big difference.

Cards are way more convenient, less hassle in the long run, and let you get an accurate tally of what you spend. Cash just means constant trips to the ATM, spending money in dribs and drabs and forgetting about it, and the risk of getting mugged when you flash it too much.

  7. Re:Google should apologise. on Google Begins Removing AFP From Google News · · Score: 4, Interesting

To be fair, agencies like AFP don't rely (or even need) on traffic to their own Web sites. They make all their money by selling their feeds and licencing their articles to other publications which then go out and make the money on advertising, etc. I doubt it'd hit the AFP much (or any agency) if their own sites were totally blacklisted by Google.

Is the term "percentage points" replaced with "percentage commas" in Europe?

A facetious question, I'm guessing.. but in case not.. points, in this case, does not refer to decimal points, but more simply a "score".

  10. Why is it taking this long? on Irish Cinema Set to Go Digital First · · Score: 4, Interesting

I can't understand why it's taking so long to move from regular projection to digital projection. I'm hoping someone with more experience here can fill us in on what's going on.

Are they waiting on standards or a big change in the industry? Are they waiting on a new file format, DRM, or aspect ratio? Is the distribution network missing? Where is the bottleneck in getting this rolled out in more places?

I would hazard a guess that they could make an LCD attachment for existing projectors that would allow digital projection to take place at a cheaper rate, kinda like the transparent LCD screens you can get for regular overhead projectors. This being the case, is the distribution network the problem?

The amount of money that would be saved in distribution and replication costs, as well as having the ability to show more films at more times, would surely overcome the cost of upgrades. Or is it all down to being wary of change?

North Americans speak French. It's not false, but it's not strictly true either.
