Engineered, yes. But question is, can it be hacked so as for private people in a town to set up a mesh- style self regulating network? Now that would be cool. Or imagine a school with a good netconnection. They could allow their kids to keep on surfing from home.

Is there a point in compiling desktop-aimed distros to 386? I mean, it's not like you can actually run KDE + OO on a 386? Wouldn't 586 or even 686 be a little more realistic?
This is my wish for a linux distro. I work in a Windows only company where linux is slowly creeping in (embedded, specialised application servers, a small beowulf). I have ZERO chance of getting admin rights on the network or influencing the IT dept. towards Linux. What I need is a distro which not only coexists with windows, but automatically sucks its settings, copies email settings, home drive and printers. Automatically install the correct autentication module so people can log on with their active directory password. Read the windows drive letters and mount them. Note I write this from a linux box. I am trying, but it could be easier.
If you have a big enough private company, you start seeing the same kind of attitude. "It is not my money." and a shrug. I think it has to do with volume and inertia, not with private/public.
Break into a Linux server that has no services running[...] From TFA: This server won't be protected by firewall. There won't be any fake demons or honeypots as well. It will be running all the services normally found in a regular Linux distribution and more.
When Google will port Picasa to a web-interface, followed by a small word processor, and offer their customers 1 GB to store their data, they will need to have their fingers in at least one big browser. Not to pump it full with ads, but to make sure it is a good enough thin client for their purposes.

Yes the dude makes himself look ridiculous. But I would like to oppose the "english is dominant" view. It is not the English language which dominates this planet, but a small subset of it. "Communication English", spoken all over the world, contains only a fraction of vocabulary and grammar of "the real thing". And people who can show you the way in Bejing most probably have read neither Shakespare nor any of the more modern classics. So starting to digitise English litterature is really not as "normal" as you might think. I am not French, but I can speak it. And I can tell you this: the French language has song lyrics which make John Lennon look like a guy from "star for an evening". Yup the frenchkies should get their act together and start digitising themselves, no Shakespare does not rule the world.

I work for an organisation with 4000 people. somehow I don't think "they" will allow me to install a spam filter on "their" server.
