You made a bullshit hyperbole statement: "Perl code is fundamentally unreadable". I called you on - it's not true. Things that are fundamentally unreadable can't be read. Lots of people can read perl. Hence, you come across as a zealot, one that will make any absurd claim to promote his agenda.

Now you're backing off your claim that perl is "fundamentally unreadable" in you rebuttal with this: " There's a damn good reason that the widely held opinion of people who know both languages, is that Python is much easier to read and maintain than Perl ". Wow, talk about moving the goal posts. This may be true, python might be easier to read on average and might be easier to maintain on average. This is pretty fucking meaningless, IMO, and I never claimed otherwise. You can't paint my position however you like, but I won't defend it. Here's what I think is important: the differences in fundamental readability and maintainability between python and perl (and other languages) is usually dwarfed by the difference you see from programming practices, individual code quality, and other artifacts of skill, policy and discipline. There's a reason people frequently say "you can write obfuscated code in any langauge" after all.

Here's the another thing I think is important. I use perl as a toolsmithing language. It's ideally suited for this task, IMO, and with care, maintainable tools can be written. Other people undertake more serious endeavors with perl - and with the right approach, I'm sure this is a manageable task. Personally, I prefer C++ or Java for more serious / longlived / formal endeavors. Why does it piss python evangelists off so much that there is no niche for python in some programmer's worlds?

So now about the rest of you unfounded assumptions and zealotry:

you're just getting all huffy because you've invested so much time and effort in such a badly designed language

What!!! You don't know this. I've used perl for years, but it's not my "main" language or anything.

You've painted yourself into a corner, and now you don't want to admit that it was a bad idea

Again, unfounded offensive bullshit assumptions on your part. Perl isn't my main language. I've used other scripting langauges, tcl, ruby, unix shell stuff, even played with python some. I'm in no way painted into a corner. If perl ceased to exists tomorrow I'd be ok. Methods, paradigms, and experience transcend language boundaries. I have no compelling reason to add YASL to my repretoire, and with no demostrated serious deficiencies with perl for my purposes, your hot air is a waste of time.

When did you learn Perl, and how much Python code have you written

I first touched perl in about 93. I've only played with python. Your point? There's more than perl and python in this world. And there are no perfect languages, your crusades notwithstanding.

If you could be convinced that Python was easier to read than Perl, would you use it instead? I bet not, because Perl zeallots use Perl for all the wrong reasons, and they actually enjoy its flaws.

This is a strange question. I can read perl fine. If I could convince you that esperanto was easier to read than english, would you use it instead? I bet no, because Engline zealots use English for all the wrong reasons, they actually enjoy its flaws. ROFL. The irony here is that you definitely are the zealot in this case - read the whole thread. And, on average, it seems like the python guys are the zealots. Sometimes it seems like the only reason python was created was to attack perl. Seriously, python has some nice stuff in it, but why some many zealous users? My use of perl and other languages doesn't diminish your utility of python, so get off your soapbox already.

Can you explain your reasons for believing Pe

Theft means something concrete - both legally and conceptually. Copyright violation is another beast entirely. Oppenheim's effort to blur the distiction is pure spin. He'd equate copyright violation with rape, murder, or genocide if he thought he could get away with it.
