  1. Not Enough on Lucas To Redo Star Wars In 3-D · · Score: 1

The ONLY new thing this version would give us (beyond the previous versions) is cooler special effects. This is not enough reason for to re-see (and re-pay for) those movies.

I have a filter for a "blockbuster" movie: If the *first* thing somebody tells me about it is how good the special effects were, my desire to see it drops by 95%. That is usually a guarantee that the movie had a lousy plot, bad acting, or usually both.

This filter works great; I have missed a lot of turkeys. (If only I'd used it for Attack of the Clones!)

They have a contractual relationship with you, but not with IBM (or whoever wrote the original GPL code you modified). Thus, they probably own the code you wrote, but not the original code. In any case, they cannot alter a license assigned by a company with whom they have no relationship.

Strip out your code, print it out, and shove it in an inter-office envelope. Or tell them to shove it in.

  4. Re:Social Security numbers? on Consumers Data Stolen from LexisNexis · · Score: 1

The ONLY time and reason you MUST give someone your SSN is for tax-related purposes.

In fact, not only do you not have to give it out for any other reason, it is ILLEGAL for companies to even ASK for it for non-tax-related purposes.

A company that does, and that refuses to do business with you if you refuse to give them your SSN is in violation of federal law.

Of course, this law is utterly un-enforced. Nevertheless, you have the right, and are in the right to refuse to give out your SSN (again, for non-tax purposes), and to insist that the company generate some alternate ID number for interacting with them.

Oh, and tell your bank to leave your SSN off of your statement!!!!!

  5. Disc Space and... on Broadband to Kill Off DVD? · · Score: 1

I dunno about others, but I like having the physical disks (DVD and CD). I have a CD changer, and a DVD changer, so the movies and music are stored, and easy to get to, but not taking up hard drive space. Plus, I don't have to worry about losing everything if (when) a drive fails.

Of course, I would back everything up...Then I'd have twice as much drive space being used, and I STILL have to worry about drive failures.

Pfui. I prefer the original silver disks.

Consumers won't trust any website with their credit card number, and with no money to be made on the web, the retailers will pull out too.

"Despotism is the idea that one man is smarter than a million men. Democracy is the idea that a million men are smarter than one man. Who decides?"

Why should I pay attention to what any blogger has to say? And why does the fact that there are a million bloggers change the answer to that question?

And of course, there's the old saying about opinions and assholes...

I read professional sites/magazines/newspapers because I have reason to believe that, due to the training and experience of those who run it, and those who report for it, what is published has a good chance of being approximately true, and approximately informed. While it is true (before others point it out) that this belief is becoming increasingly unlikely to be true, nevertheless I have NO such expectation for any random blogger's musings, and so I see no reason to read them, except perhaps for amusement.

Blogs as the future of journalism? I doubt it. I certainly fear it.
