  1. Re:Destined to be obsolete on Caller ID Watches · · Score: 1

It already is obsolete for me .... I don't wear a watch cos I use my mobile phone to tell the time! Lots of people I know do this as well.

  2. Re:Neither Proved Nor Disproved on Is String Theory Really a Scientific Theory? · · Score: 0, Troll

Does anyone really care about this? All people really want to know is - how long is the piece of string?

  3. Re:Heh on Hypoallergenic Cats · · Score: 1

Its great when pets take on the characteristics of their owners, isn't it?

  4. Re:Dupe on Hypoallergenic Cats · · Score: 3, Insightful

And what they fail to point out to the people buying these cute cuddly kittens is - what happened to the many 'unsuccessful candidates' in the breeding program?

  5. Re:Probably kills brain cells, too. on Analog Revival Means Vinyl Will Outlive CD · · Score: 2, Interesting

Its the visuals I get nostalgic for - the artwork on CD's feels really bleh after having grown up with nice big record sleeves to hold. For instance owning both formats of Led Zeppelin albums - I prefer looking at the album cover on the LP's but the CD's are what I'd play. Having said that I still love the artwork on my own bands CD ;-)

My choice would be to have CD's delivered in LP sized cardboard album sleeves - mine all go into a big folder wallet anyway.

  6. How loud are they? on ATI and nVidia Crush High-End DVD Players · · Score: 2, Insightful

The fan on that ATI card looks loud.... I think the DVD player would be quieter.

  7. Re:I need a metronome..... on F(OS)S for Learning a Musical Instrument ? · · Score: 1

You can get electronic and portable programmable metronomes now with headphone sockets. Though watch out - a number of drummers actually get their deafness from using click tracks rather than the actual drumming!

  8. Re:Soln: Profile passengers, or go on pretending. on Is Your Laptop At Risk While Traveling? · · Score: 1

Actually a lot of the Afgan based terrorists were getting training and money from the CIA back in the 80s (including Bin Laden)...and why? Because they were fighting the Soviet Communists. So presumably terrorists were OK for the US to support back then. And don't forget the numerous US-back revolutionaries in South American countries with democratically elected Socialist governments (often replaing them with murderous facists such as Pinochet) because McCarthy et al didn't appreciate the difference between socialism and communism. The US supports terrorism when it suits its own needs.

In fact, on current form, Sony should be announcing a price hike.

  10. Mozart was a writer on The Expert Mind · · Score: 1

I believe in the context of being able to play instruments TFA has a point about how good you appear being related to how long you've been practising.

Mozart was remembered for being a great creator - that kind of insight cannot be given by training alone, though it *usually* does help to know the ground rules of whatever field you are in to be able to be a visionary in it.

  19. Re:Paper Sleeves on Replacement for Jewel Cases? · · Score: 1

Added advantage is that paper is much more environmentally friendly than oil burning plastics. I've started using card in cases for demos that I send out from my band for this reason.

  23. Re:Toon Boom on Efficient 2D Animation Software? · · Score: 1

I did use ToonBoom. It has a lot of nice features for animation workflow, but there were a couple of flaws which meant I gave up using it.

Although it allows multiple camera usage in scene planning, when it comes to rendering the video you are only allowed one camera for the whole video, which made switching between cameras to do something like get a close-up of someones face and back to the whole scene a pain to implement and was a really stupid limitation. It was deeply annoying because the multiple camera thing is something they really tout on the publicity, but in effect, unless your going to do post processing work, its useless.

It may not be a killer for others as it was for me but, as the forums showed, its a limitation that frequently catches new users out.
