After watching the video in the story, I have to admit, the effect of the trick performed on the large scale is quite spectacular...much more so than the other videos of a solitary guy with a solitary bottle of Diet Coke in a backyard.
It should be noted (atleast in the new Slashdot "Related Story" section) that this is a continuation of these two earlier stories published on/. earlier this year.
It would also be fruitful to mention that that Google turns up these stories with the most obvious of keywords: alien rain India site:slashdot.org.
...it may be worthwhile to mention that India has already built 1300 miles of it's 2500 mile fenced barrier along it's border with Bangladesh.
It may be noted (for those unfamiliar with the region's history/politics) that India has faced a considerable inflow of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh for more than a decade. Moreover, unlike India-Bangladesh relations are not benign as the US-Mexico relations currently seem to be, with a number of alleged fundamentalist religious organizations from Pakistan using the porous border to carry out terrorist activities on Indian soil.
While the world's attention has been focused on the Israeli security barrier sealing off the West Bank, India has been building a far longer fence to keep out Islamic militants, thwart cross-border smuggling and stop human trafficking.
More than 1,300 miles of the barrier has been erected in the six years since building began. Snaking through jungles, rivers and the villages of five states, Delhi's floodlit, 12ft double fence packed with razor wire will render India a fortress against her neighbour.
This is not intended as flamebait, nor as a political rant. Just thought it might be useful to look at the steps other countries have been taking to combat unapproved/illegal immigration into their borders...probably from more hostile neighbors.
I for one think each piece of technology has it's own place where it works well. Just because we have the technology to stream live video via the intarw3b doesn't mean it can replace a relatively low-cost hard barrier (agreed though that the FTA claims this is a temporary solution).
Thanks for the note. Yes, I've seen people I know create brand new accounts and get mod priveleges within a month. Moreover, I usually spend a good 3-4 minutes of my time to evaluate each metamod I make to make sure I'm being fair. Well, not any more. Thank you/..
When using your AMD(TM) quad-core desktop computer at the campgrounds, always practice safety. Surround your quad-core computer with rocks to keep the fire from spreading. Be sure when you're done with your quad-core computer to put it out with a bucket of water and make sure it has stopped smoking before you leave the area.
Remember what Smokey the Bear says. Only you can prevent your AMD(TM) quad-core desktop computer from starting a forest fire.
NO, I haven't Meta-moderated recently. And you know why? Because after 3 years of Metamodding, there hasn't been a single instance where I've received actual Mod-points.
And yes, my Karma is excellent, I used to meta-mod diligently and I don't "refresh too often", some factors that are believed to consign users to "metamod hell".
I suggest they rate these music recommendation services based on how rarely they recommend Brittany Spears, Jessica Simpson and Celine Dion. It'll be too soon if I don't hear one of them sing their guts out ever again.
An inverse metric would work nicely for ranking a video recommendation service.
vigilante n. 1. One who takes or advocates the taking of law enforcement or moral code into one's own hands.
This is what happens when a corporate consortium declares itself a vigilante in the fight against pirrracy. What makes it worse is there own twisted view of what is morally right and what isn't (suing students into bankruptcy and hacking into people's computers to justify there ends most certainly isn't).
I don't want to start a holy war here, but what is the deal with you Vista Beta 2 fanatics? I've been sitting here at my freelance gig in front of an Vista Beta 2 (a Lenovo with 2GB of RAM) for about 20 minutes now while it attempts to copy a 17 Meg file from one folder on the hard drive to another folder. 20 minutes. At home, on my Pentium Pro 200 running XP, which by all standards should be a lot slower than this Vista Beta 2, the same operation would take about 2 minutes. If that.
In addition, during this file transfer, wireless networking will not work. And everything else has ground to a halt. Even built-in audio is straining to keep up as I type this.
I won't bore you with the laundry list of other problems that I've encountered while working on various Vista Beta 2 installations, but suffice it to say there have been many, not the least of which is I've never seen an Vista Beta 2 that has run faster than its XP counterpart, despite the Vista Beta 2's faster architecture. My 486/66 with 8 megs of ram runs faster than this 4.1 Ghz machine at times. From a productivity standpoint, I don't get how people can claim that the Vista Beta 2 is a superior OS.
Vista Beta 2 addicts, flame me if you'd like, but I'd rather hear some intelligent reasons why anyone would choose to use an Vista Beta 2 over other faster, cheaper, more stable systems.
increased use of encryption by criminals, paedophiles, and terrorists.
...it has been found that:
- cameras are used by criminals, paedophiles, and terrorists - we need access to your negatives/memory disks.
- houses are used by criminals, paedophiles, and terrorists - we need access to your house keys.
- cars are used by criminals, paedophiles, and terrorists - we need copies of your car keys.
- ATM machines are used by criminals, paedophiles, and terrorists - we need to know your PINs.
- Online email services are used by criminals, paedophiles, and terrorists - we need to know your username/passwords.
- Computers are used by criminals, paedophiles, and terrorists - we need to install a backdoor on your computer.
...like lugging some of Sun's monstrosities around on one's back. I have only the Sunblade 100's and their heavy-duty CRT monitors to thank for, for my markedly improved resilience and my super-sturdy balls.
A SSN is just a name, a public identifier, or a login username if you will. It is _not_ a password or authentication mechanism (for that matter, neither is my mother's maiden name or street address). Using a SSN+address for authentication is as ridiculous as using a username+IPAddress alone for online banking.
I wonder why more companies/organizations don't realize this, and any step to educate them is a step in the right direction.

Watch it if you a /.ing so permits.
A number of different groups of people seem to have attempted it as the different versions available on Google depict.

Those are the things I've always wanted in women too.
If nothing else, it'll show up on the earth shine and indicate we're inhabited. On the other hand, they probably already know that...
Neither can power plugs that you can directly plug into your ass after ingesting healthy amounts of symbiotic bacteria.

Life, perhaps. No? I thought only Microsoft was run by the undead.

The world will be SO much safer without all those nasty bits and bytes floating around on the internets
OUCH! That pesky little bit just bit me. Take that and THAT you pesky bit! *smack*.

You mean they handled the situation (and the laptop) with a single three-fingered hand? That is quite impressive.
Creepy though.
