hmm...reading the posts are important too!!
I didnt metion any paper. The link on my post point to the opinions and discussions of/.ers and not to the paper!!!
But it doesn't matter anyway! And you know why? Because it might sound crazy but R'ing TFA its not enough.. you have to understand what you read, too, But i guess thats asking too much!
Because if the author had read the paper you say he mentioned, he would be able to understand that its not about beeing right or wrong, it is about beeing useful!
Does When I read the literature, I'm not reading it to find proof like a textbook. I'm reading to get ideas. So even if something is wrong with the paper, if they have the kernel of a novel idea, that's something to think about. ring any bells?
Unfortunatelly useful sometimes means making the research available to the public in general in order to justify the budget already spent! So if the author thinks that science papers are not to his like..well too bad he's not as humble as he's smart!!
We cannot expect the regular population to have a degree in physics, chemistry or whatever in order to understand what science is up to when they watch the news!
"Its much easier to dumb one or two smart asses down than to smart a whole neighborhood of dumb asses up!"
But hey !! That's just my point of view!
well I think the trolling started not because of the unpatched bug itself but because the headlines stated that it would only be fixed at end of the year!
i mean you have to agree with us trolls that even for microsoft terms its a long time to fix a security bug! =D
Well, i don't really get it...i mean come on! Every now and then i get surprised on how much those critics are really off with their ratings!
It 's like saying : "It is ok to steal cars, to kill people and to deal drugs, as long as we keep the game 'clean' with no sex content and no swearing!"
Come on, people!! If children were really influenced by the video-games they play, I'd rather have a kid playing the Old Larry games http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leisure_Suit_Larry than any other violent content game! I mean sex is better than shooting people, right?
And don't even get me started on swearing! Did you know that the cursing words are not in the same part of your brain where other words are regularly stored? Therefore recent studies have showed that cursing is more a physiological necessity than a habit!
Let's put the game on as it is and let the children play! I mean if parents are not around to teach their children right from wrong, we cannot expect video-games do that for them !!
well...
Lets just say for my comment's sake that these studies on speed and duration of the earthquakes could lead to new technologies to detect earthquekes earlier. That would be super nice, right?
Wrong!
All this earlier prediction has no use if the coastal cities that are prone to have earthquakes do not have emergency measures like alarms on the beach, "tsunami" drills with rescue teams, or even instructions on hotels and schools in how to behave in emergencies like that.
Just in case we dont remember "that" tsunami that hit sumatra were detected with more than one hour before it hit the coast and killed those people.
It is funny when they say on the article:
"It will be able to move towards a specific target, such as a wrecked pipe laying on the ocean floor -- and maybe fix it."
This shows how robotics has been developed over the last years. Something like this:
"We must first build some robots to justify our budget. Once they're ready, we will worry about finding a good use to them to satisfy the market."
..is to take it with you eveytime you're leaving the country isn't it??
So in order for someone to use a digital passport, all the countries with which your country have diplomatic relations, should have the right equipment (hardware and software) to take advantage of it!
In other words, it sounds really neat but i dont think it has practical use
This is like having a Gigabit network card when you are connected to a 10 mbit hub! (sorry i couldnt resist the geeky comparison)
Ok Ok...i have to agree that FIAT is a very crappy car when compared to Mercedes, BMW or even VW.
But dont you forget that FIAT is also owner of FERRARI (One of the best). And this brings on an interesting point:
Will Ferrari cars have this Microsoft technology as well?? If so, Formula 1 races will be much more fun to watch( evil smile ).
the most difficult part in changing the client is to convice all my friends to change the IM with me and not just them but also the friends of my friends, the friends of the friends of my friends, and so on...
Too bad (since ICQ is very popular in Brazil).
But everytime Microsoft steps on something seems to wreck it. ( or turn it evil if you will =D )
What surprises me is AOL (who has sued Microsoft in the past and apparently Netscape's owner. The same Netscape who, in the past, has helped the open source community with Mozilla , ) joining Microsoft on this project, relaying the network on MS and having the guts to say that this will the best for the users!
Think for a minute here, if they decide to change or to create a new protocol for their so-called Middleware, the open-source users will be locked out of this IM(at least for a while). Since Microsoft means "I-dont-want-you-to-see-my-crappy-code - source".
This might be a small step for IM users, but is a HUGE step back for the Open-source community.
well , the concept we learned in school is that sound is a mechanical vibration in some kind of matter (liquids, solids, gases and why not the 4th state of matter : plasma).
from what i read in the news , the spacecraft has only captured the vibration generated by the plasma clouds when a particle hit the hull.
the vibration captured was then sent to NASA and just then the researchers converted the eletrical vibe to "air-sounds". So we all can appreciate!
i don't think so, i mean our magnetic field is much stronger than mars. Mag fields
I think the most risk we have is to loose a "few" satellites, and some increase in skin cancer..but nothing as drastic as loosing all the water and life on earth.
Unless of course you're talking about the end of the Sun and the solar system.
When then the Sun will expand to the size of Vennus turning Earth into a new Mercury.
but then again not to worry that will not happen on the next 5 billion years from now and we will have extinct ourselve until there =P
yeah , i have to agree with you that is hard to believe in numbers thrown randomly in the middle of the text just like this one. So just let me just point out on thing :
If they dont give us the margin of error, we cant be sure of how many people , in the worst case, have actually changed browsers. if they margin of error is plus or minus 1% , Microsofts IE had actually an increase in use rather than a decrease
But if you are an optimist (like me =D ), you have to consider how big that really is, considering that is really difficult for regular people (grandmas, grandpas, regular joes , non-geeks in general) to change their old computer habits.
I mean that they are willing to sacrifice:
not only their access to some sites that only support I.E., but also Microsoft support for problems that they may actually have with the new browser.
I do think that, if the decrease is actually real, it is a giant leap. Try to look at the bright side:regular users are beginning to be conscious that Microsoft is not the only solution for web browsing.
with a title like Network Security Hacks I would expect much more than teaching me how to install a program on my computer or how to use SSH to tunnel a connection like the reviewer has said.
Sorry if im being mean but you can learn just as much by reading the manpages or by using google after the how-tos.
If you really want to learn something useful about networks I suggest the good old Richard Stevens
I guess the best bet for someone who just wants to try out BSD is Freesbie
A BSD newbie must also know that all BSDs have the same advantage over Linux. That is good documentation for development and for POSIX patterns.
But im not trying to start a flamewar, even because BSDs may not be the best OS for everyone.
for regular users, or for bigger OS flexibility, i would sugest to stay with our pal Tux! (ive used it for long time =) )
but if you want to build a stable server in which youll need to do some secure,well-documented development, BSD is always a good choice.
One must only have in mind that the BSDs are not all equal as ive read on earlier posts!! (people were talking about FreeBSD when the topic clearly states about Open).
just for the record:
NetBSD >runs on everything with 32 bits. (including toasters =D)
FreeBSD > good performance and stability.
(My personal choice ! )
OpenBSD > awesome security but bad performance compared to the other 2.(what i have to work with in college)
just thought that someone needed to clear that out!
Can't they consider that "maybe" they are loosing the market share for the growing of Free Software??
There are a lot of good stuff on the "wild" these days. And most of them are available for free with the same (or better) functionalities of their payed counterparts.
You just need to download it and you are set to go.
Maybe it is much easier to get on the bandwagon of blaming P2P software than improving payed-software quality for a good old competition with free software.
It makes sense if you think that they can also get some cash back on the courts!
My guess is that it must be easier for the company to invest on the juridical department than investing on software development. =)
It's curious to notice that when something like this is done for a social cause (like HP is doing for Africa), it gets a lot of positive input (i.e slashdotters posts).
On the other hand if it's done only as a research showing only that it can be done, with no direct social goal, people tend to be more critical about it. Just compare the posts:
that i never noticed the Wikipedia before until today when i recognized the little puzzle globe on the left of the page.
Many of my searches on google would end up there but I never payed much attention to the site itself, since i was focusing on the subject i was looking for...
good to know that Wikipedia has helped me before even though i never actually asked for its help in particular, this shows how efficient it really is since many of its resources are available through other search engines.
Caching information can also be used as a backup of data in case the server crashes or has its data compromised by a virus , hacker, whatever you feel like..
so what happens if you, for instance, have a security hole in one of your "smart" servers?? or even a breach in the protocol structure (DoS)?
you could get the server to "breed" algorithms that would stop all servers by either corrupting the data in all servers that are providing the service or just DoS-ing them.
I guess i'm not yet convinced that this solution is of any good for real world network which the whole structure is based on insecure protocols. maybe after IPV6, IPV9, who knows?
There's a difference between the Mozilla Foundation and the Mozilla project.
The Mozilla Foundation, established in July of 2003, exists to provide organizational, legal, and financial support for the Mozilla open-source software project.
The Mozilla project begun as when Netscape Communications announced in January 23rd,1998 that the source code for Netscape Communicator would be free of charge.
..well im not so sure about that since a DoS is a form of attack.
Consider the following situation:
1- one user logs into his mail server and naively executes britneynaked.gif.exe and starts spreading the worm to all of his contacts.
2- now, if all users that receive the worm do the same thing, the serve will start to bog his way down.
3- Some users will not be able to connect to the server since it is to busy processing millions of worms going back and forth.
4- The server has ben attacked.
Now we can teach those damn hurricanes a lesson they wont forget!
considering that we are living in the rocket age of warfare, it looks like a huge moving target to me!

Why is science in the media so often pointless, simplistic, boring, or just plain wrong?
/. on his "research site list"
Well apparently the articles author didnt have
Considering
this , it is even possible that we are releasing less Carbon than expected and Earth is actually getting COLDER!
hooray for sensationalistic science and the new Ice age! =D
