There is a reason that every write "hello world". There is a reason that it is actually ok to reinvent the wheel, if only to figure out how the wheel works so you can use it better.
I gotta say I cannot believe this hit/. frontpage, are there no more "do it yourself" programmers around?
For me, one of the things I would program into my calculator would be programs what worked out these multi-step problems as well as print out each step. I mostly did it because I hated homework and doing the same problem that I understood already over and over hurt my brain.
Clearly this is encouraging more works to be created.
To be honest I would love to see at least one example of an author who created a culturally significant work pre-1950 who has created another meaningful work in the last 10 years.
When I was in highschool I would write down anyone password I saw someone type into the computer. It was completely by accident though, I didn't mean to carry my notepad and pen with me where ever I went.
I applaud you on recoding/releasing your code as BSD. My previous company did all of their open source work under a BSD license which was (imo) great for both the community and its employees.
I loved doing math by the time I was in 5th grade, so that lead me to doing it on my own time. My mom bought me some higher level math books, in fact that was the only "home"work that I have every enjoyed, and it wasn't even from the school.
I guess my point is that (anecdotally) you can still do math at an earlier age if you choose to, but I do know a lot of people that could not get it till a bit later. I'm talking about algebra+ here, I think pre-8 should know the basics of counting, addition and subtraction.
That's true, and if someone is doing more with their life then I applaud them. But if you are spending 1/4 or more of your life doing something it seems to make sense that you would want to focus on improving that, and making it fun if possible.
I would hope that if you are in the computer programing world you understand that cranking out solutions to formulas is way more suited to computers than it is to humans.
If you want to solve a bunch of math problems then boot up maple, matlab, or any number of programs.
Doing a bunch of calculus or whatever is _not_ the reason that you want mathy people to be computer programmers. Analyzing and quantifying problems, applying appropriate algorithms, optimization, etc are all areas where someone who understands the math behind a problem can far outshine those who don't.
To be honest though I think most software devs are into math anyway.
xkcd has about 10 funny comics. I think people spam it to to sites like digg and slashdot because it gives them hope that they too can create a webcomic. Somehow xkcd doesn't rely on good art or good jokes so there has to be this third factor.
A non-warming planet can also mean more snow year-to-year. And anyway it doesn't say anything about human-caused warming since we know the planet has gone through many warming and cooling cycles naturally.
That would imply that tolerance of sexual "deviancy" encourages it. I'm not sure if there is any indication that there are more homosexuals now than in previous generations, its just that you don't get auto-shunned by everyone if you come out.
Just like digital audio and DVDs, Blu-ray will no longer be a profitable media.
Unless you absolutely need a numerical result, why do you need a calculator for physics?

I would bet that the "creator" got part of his tune from previous songs he heard, its just that we don't have sufficient records from that time.

If it can't play starcraft 2 natively, then at best its just a utility OS for me. Hopefully it will be able to run under virtualbox though.

"there is no such thing as syncing 3D glasses. They sync automatically."
So they don't sync, but they sync? /dnrtfa
That is the reason we should not discourage math/egghead programmers at all :)
We need more of this to convince people that it is absolutely worth it to research and use stem cells as much as we can.

I would hope that people do not strive to be "typical programmers".

I think looking at a Scottish pub would be quicker.
Yeah, but they are most likely just user processes, who cares?

oh wait, you mean this isn't digg?

So that would be a solid "no".
"Math" uses = for assignment all the time.
x=5 doesn't mean that the letter x and 5 are interchangeable in all instances, it means that in this context, x has the value of 5.

This lady seems to think that if she gets a new email address, her old one is gone. Why not just phase the new address in with any new projects?
