Holy flerking schnit man, you are some kind of Internet mutant. I love it! You know, I met Rob at a LinuxWorld one year, they were passing the mic around and giving out Slashdot shirts to anyone who asked a question. When I saw him, he looked kind of like the kind of guy who would enjoy participating in a furious, multi-cock, world record busting gang bang. I don't know, that's just me. Make sure to step out of the basement for just a moment and smell the air, it's nice, I promise.
I worked for Filefront as a newsie and then the news manager/editor (2004-2006) and generally enjoyed my time there. I got to assemble my own staff, the guy running all of the files in the background was always top notch and we always managed to get the latest demo files pretty quick.
I'm really glad they're not closing, there are so many files and so many MODs hosted there, it would of been a real hit to the gaming community if they closed their doors.
I was the "executive news editor" at Filefront from 2004-2006. Everything went as well as it could, I had a 19 year old boss and upper management I'd never met. Covering E3 2004 was a blast though, watching my PR manager get totally pwned by Fata1ity in UT was a treat.
They don't want it because they don't understand it. If they knew that broadband would bring them quicker load times, HD video, video communications and more, they'd be all for it. Of course, it's also just a faster path for all of that spyware/adware grandma keeps accumulating on her computer.
I say fsck them, wtf do they know, we need better broadband penetration and we need it now. I want FIOS to already be available everywhere, regardless if the morons in the general public don't think they want it.
Yeah, you may remember this story from March '08 about the norcal hippy town that turned down free public wifi from Sonic.net due to health concerns.... -->> http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/03/26/0118237
I live in that little town and I love my hippy brethren, but they're fucking nuts. I want my WiFi, damn it... every time I try to educate someone on the subject I get the same kind of "that's just, like, your opinion, man" response. I guess I'm stuck leeching wifi around the residential areas.... *sigh*
I'm a musician's son, my dad is a musician and has watched his royalties go to other people, his works sold without his permission and all sorts of bullshit from these people. I'm not surprised in the slightest.
ehh, I had my doubts about XP when it came out.. I started using Vista RTM in November and have had a few problems with it. I want to strip it down, kill off a bunch of services and disable the new lame UAC shit.. it has potential but yeah, I think most of the comments here are right, wait for SP1 and it will be a production OS-- that's highly unprofessional, but it's what we've come to expect from the lumbering beast.
How long until there's homebrew stuff you ask? Why does my mind go directly to the gutter?
How hard would it be to write a XXX rated game and how many sexual maneuvers could you.. uhm.. execute with the Wiimote..
Just a thought.
Yeah, for a certain age group, almost everyone pirates. I'm somewhat conflicted, because I don't want to give Microsoft any of my hard earned money, but I am also a musician's son and I know that "artists" rely on royalty checks to survive.
My two cents.. yeah, we're going to crack your protection schemes and use your product and its updates for free.. deal with it.
I'd imagine that the number of pirated installs is much larger, too.
Ehh.. come on, is this such a shock? I mean, seriously. None of these schemes are safe, as long as there is time and bored hackers there will be broken protection schemes.
I totally agree, I can't believe what's happened to EA over the years. I think Battlefield 2 was the beginning of the end, endless map exploits and game bugs, followed by late patches that came in at 400-500MB's a piece. Give us a break EA, do you think we're going to buy 2142 after all the bullshit you put us through?
Unfortunatly, every game I play these days has the 'ol EA tramp stamp of approval when you load up.. BAH! DIE! DIE DIE DIE!
Gator is probably the most annoying spyware out there. If they don't like being called by WHAT THEY ARE then maybe they shouldn't create evil software that NO ONE wants on their PCs.. and if anyone who has been using windows for a while had the choice of removing Gator and all of its employees from the face of the earth they would do it in a heartbeat.
Yes I do know about a lot of what went on in eFront's offices.. pressuring clients.. theft.. all sorts of fun stuff! I had fun there and eventually moved on to The-Ctrl-Alt-Del.com which was famous for very early detonator leaking hehe.. and now GamingGroove.. we're still not back up *sigh*.
I had kind of a similar experience in highschool, I worked for a small tech news site called Geeknews, they were owned by a giant asshole of a company called eFront.. I started a gaming section on the site and began receiving titles like Max Payne, Gunman: Chronicals and Homeworld: Cataclysm.. fortunatly I got a lot of genuinly good titles but I made sure to note in the reviews what bothered me about the title and what other people might be bothered with. Anyway.. most of the entertainment industry has been doing this for ages.. it's nothing new. We're just seeing it on the web more and more now because we're so used to seeing "Best Product Ever!" "Killer Buy!" and so on and so forth plastered over everything in sight.

I keep all my money inside a Magnum condom, inside a donkey.
Whatever will we do!
What the hell! Have all of the US hackers succumbed to death by mountain dew? Has all of the young talent gone to Russia + China?

I didn't hear any gun shots or fireworks-- what gives?

Were the monkeys smoking as much pot as todays college students do?
