Why do I have visions of SWAT teams busting down doors with automatic weapons at the ready into rooms of nervous nerds sitting at computer screens sort of akin to the Elian Gonzalez photos?
Yeah, we are back to the assumption that Corporate America likes to make that every single song, movie or piece of software would have been legally purchased if they had not been illegally downloaded. Obviously that is false, but it makes the "losses sufferred" sound really impressive.
We had a problem with our PS2. I have to give Sony credit. They had us ship the old one to them and had it repaired and back to us in a matter of weeks. They were very courteous on the phone and made everything easy for us.
Hopefully since those bugs in the Linux kernel have been identified, they can be fixed. While whatever bugs there are in Windows have not been identified since the source code is not availalble. For those we will have to wait for the next exploit to be announced.
But how many times have you gotten a good book picked out and sit down to start reading on the flight, and get that "so whatcha reading?" And next thing you have heard their entire life story. You kept your face down in the book trying to discourage them. So I am not sure what is worse, having them drone on endlessly trying to talk to you or drone on endlessly talking to someone else. Either way it is extremely annoying.
I had read a couple articles along the lines of this one at http://www.cdfreaks.com/news/8407
"Apple in fact makes no revenue from their online download service. Even though the tracks are digitally encoded online without any CD-replication costs, CD delivery costs and shops to run apart from the iTunes store itself the tracks are still very severely over priced by the music industry. Nearly all of the 99 cent one pays for an Apple iTunes download goes straight to the copyright holders. The small portion that Apple gets just barely covers the iTunes hosting and running costs, the credit card company cost per transaction as well as the iTunes webstore & client software development."
I hope I am not being too cynical, but I hope it isn't decided by other major advertisers such as.... oh... say Microsoft or AOL Time Warner or some other large company that might have reason to not like open source free software. Perhaps not even directly but due to fear of offending them.
what are their hopes for finding new jobs?"
With AOL's reputation for great customer service and product excellence, I would think that former employees would be snapped up....... what AOL..... oh never mind.
I work for a fairly large corporation and supervise a group of people. I used to think the spelling mistakes were just typing errors, that all of the grammatical mistakes and punctuation errors were just laziness. Don't get me wrong, I mistype words occasionally and I certainly do not always use perfect grammar. But, I see an awful lot of emails and reports that are nearly incomprehensible. I have also come to the conclusion that an awful lot of people really do not know how to spell or have a basic understanding of grammar. I guess further evidence that our public education system is failing miserably.
Someone with the knowledge and will and time can come up with a way to circumvent almost any protective scheme they come up with. Likely the only way to really safeguard something like this is to do a very time consuming and cpu intensive comparison of the two files. It will come back to "do you trust the source of the file".
Since you have been outed as a fraud, it appears that my own solution is now just as valid. I believe it is a consortium of Martians coming to sign the closing papers on the other recent Slashdot articles. Remember we are making Parks and designing suitable housing for the Red Planet.
As an actual parent, I have the perfect solution. I just stay on the computer all the time reading slashdot. That way the kids never get to use it anyway. And now I have the perfect excuse for the wife...."I'm doing it for the children, honey"
They ought to charge them the administrative costs for investigating and processing each of these claims if they are found to be baseless. That should slow them down a bit.
Here's another:
They knew that the Slashdotters were getting tired of the normal "Apple is going bankrupt" rumor and we needed to spice things up with a " is going to buy Apple" story.
Then we do the Branch Davidian thing. Circle the building and it will accidentally burn down of course.

It wasn't brand new and as I recall it was either just before or just after the warranty ran out.
Yes they did.

I can see you now, pointing at your ears, shaking your head and smiling. Then the other person pointing at the ear buds in your lap.
But you're forgetting, they are doing it for innovation and synergy not for profits and eliminating competition..... silly rabbit.

I had forgot about that. Apple was saying that they were charging a break even price for the songs already.
Just like my family will ignore them. My daughter has been eating crustless pb&j for years and will continue to do so. Damn the lawyers.

Kind of puzzled by this. Actually my youngest child will be graduating this year.

Thank god that someone is finally addressing the Martian housing crisis.
You overlooked the real news story. There are not alot of 80 year old bloggers..... wait... guess that wasn't news either ....
