Why spend all that effort and time to create clones of windows programs, when we can just tap into the massive Windows support that already exists?
Of course, that can't happen FOREVER. -- But until Linux gains widespread support, its the best example of 'using their own weapons against them' that the Linux movement has.
NZ government killed his Cruise Missile project...

· Score: 3, Interesting
Just a side note, the New Zealand government recently shot down bruce's $5,000 cruise missle project. read about it here.
Very sad, i was looking forward to its completion.
About a month ago, i was looking for a new shooter to play on LIVE... i went to wal-mart, and found that they had Return to Castle Wolfenstein for only $24.99 (Canadian), much cheaper than EB, who was selling it for 39$.
And its consistent -- Last week I went to go buy Ninja Gaiden -- the guy at EB said that they didnt have any used copies in, but suggested a new copy, at the canada-normal price of $69.99. Meh, i said, i might as well see what price it is across the street at wal-mart, considering the deal i got last month. Walmart had it for $58.99. (Great game, btw)
So fuck EB's high prices, Wal-mart has some really good prices on games, and that's where im shopping from now on.
The xbox has two settings for content -- one slider for movies, one slider for games. You simply set a button-combo, and if you want to play a game that is rated higher than the allowed setting, it forces you to enter your set code.
No, in fact quite the opposite -- Xenon is the offical codename (keep in mind, *codename*, not the real name, just as xbox was codenamed "Project Midway" and the Gamecube was codenamed "Dolphin")
and on the other side, the XboxNext name is a rumor. completely unconfirmed and pulled out of some reporter's ass.
read the reviews again, the/. summary is wrong/biased.
To measure how well both cards perform with actual gameplay we used Unreal Tournament 2003 and 2004 and Halo and Far Cry. For both versions of Unreal Tournament we've used the built-in benchmark, which consists of a flyby and a botmatch. We've omitted the flyby scores as they doesn't tell us much about performance during actual gameplay, just how fast the graphics card is able to render the flyby. With UT2003 the lead the GeForce 6800 Ultra takes over the Radeon 9800 XT is less impressive, at a 1024x768 and 1280x1024 resolutions it is only 6% faster. At 1600x1200 however the GeForce 6800 Ultra pulls away and clocks in 21% faster. With UT2004 the difference is much bigger, starting off at 10% at 1024x768 up to 65% faster at 1600x1200. What is also noteworthy is the fact that the performance of the Radeon 9800 XT drops at higher resolutions whereas that of the GeForce 6800 Ultra stays at about the same level.
so, how is that over 100%? i'm not an ATI fanboy myself (in fact, i run a gf4 mx440), but i sure hate those Nvidia fanboys.
This is a good opportunity to mention that Unreal Annihilation will be officially released on April 20th.
Unreal Annihilation is a mod based on Total Annihilation, a game which i'm sure many people here are highly familiar with. It actually takes the Unreal Engine and converts it to a real-time strategy game, no small feat. go check out their site, the screenshots look fantastic:
Hordes of Bill Gates clones! With rifles!
in all seriousness though, that is really, really awesome. *Massive* kudos to the Rare Witch Project, that is a really fantastic piece of work and must have taken some serious effort.
they weren't really sequels, just ports of DN3D, sometimes with bonus weapons, levels, multiplayer, etc.
But that DNF is a/the_real sequel isnt the point of the joke -- it's that they've been working on the game since god knows when, have hyped it up like some god, and have failed to deliver anything at all, except for a trailer in iirc 1999... since then, there's been 2 (again, iirc... possibly more) engine changes..
(argh, stupid/. and linebreaks)
I completely agree..
I even know a few people who believe that the publisher is the one who makes the games.
One of them continued to argue with me in the case of True Crime: Streets of LA, telling me that Activision makes all his favorite games, and that there was no way that i was telling him they didn't make them at all. (except for marketing, packaging, etc.)
It's really sad that the publisher gets all the glory, because that puts them in a position of advantage on the developers, giving the publisher all the money for doing less work. This is really evident when looking at EA --- its "EA games' Battlefield 1942", not "DICE's Battlefield 1942"
what the leads to, is the developers completely getting swindled, as the record companies do now, but in a different way -- you won't get sales unless you go with one of the big labels (in the case of games, publishers), and if you DO go with them, they'll swindle you for all you're worth.
I'd really like to hear some real developer's opinions on this though, as IANAGD. (I am not a game developer) C'mon guys, i know you're out there.

ever heard of virtualPC? its a program made by connectix that allows you to emulate any platform on any other platform.
Including running windows on your mac.
Macs run PPC. Wintels run x86.
XBOX2 will be PPC. XBOX is x86.
and the kicker....
Microsoft accquired connectix last year.
'nuff said.
Dare i show my face :)
nice to see you Proud, i should add you as a freind...
As he said though, please be easy on the server if you can, UA has put quite a demand on it already.
-Recoil
Imagine a beowulf cluster of those.
They were put up on bungie.net moments after the conference ended.
get 'em here:
Bungie.net HALO2 Screenshots, page 3.
Xbox.ign.com also has a fantastic preview up, its five pages long, so i wont bother to summarize it -- its simply a must-read though.
IGN Xbox: E3 2004: Halo 2 Multiplayer Hands-On

those benchmarks don't look too impressive to me, and the hugeass heatsink/fan combo is still there! not to mention that it requires *two* molexes?
Nvidia is really starting to fall behind...
best. the tick reference. ever.
