So you're accusing republicans of being soft on drugs? That's hilarious.

For the most part, no they are not soft...unless it involves one of them. In which case, those devoted to the person will pull a 180 and defend him.

Now, I'm going to be fair here: Democrats, Libertarians, Greens, etc. would all do the same. The problem that stems from Republicans doing this is that they are extremely outspoken in their attitude against drugs and typically believe in, "screw em, give them the full punishment." So, as should be obvious, the hypocracy is more blatent with them.

To be on topic for a moment, no, the government shouldn't have anything to do with these people except for when they do something illegal like steal. If they wish to waste away in their home playing games, let em. When they step outside and cause problems, THEN nail em.

It sounds like guy has turned around some (he says he's reading books and is learning about the culture some).

In the meantime, seeing a positive article, where an author actually admits he was initially wrong, is a BIG step. If we could get more people to admit they are wrong (getting them to learn may be another, more difficult step) in their assumptions, we'd be in the midst of amazing progress.

I like Penny Arcade's response to the article, though. Especially this:
The next time someone starts talking about how bad Vice City is, as though it were the only game in existence, as though game consoles were only capable of that single experience and nothing peripheral to it, I really do want the opportunity to ask them - please, name another game. Name one other game that you know about. No, it's not a trick question. Well, it is, if by "trick question" you mean "question designed to make you look like an idiot." I wonder if they even know that far, far from Vice City, past even the Vice suburbs, that the same machine can allow a father and son - separated by three hundred miles and thirty years - the chance to play a round of golf together, for no good reason other than its being Tuesday.

Gee... although it's undeniable that the Xbox has been somewhat a success (considering it's a 1st attempt), but I really wonder about the next round of consoles. If things don't progress (market share, profit margins) beyond XB1, I don't know how long will MS keep their videogame incursion up. (Not that they don't have TONS of money, but how long can you drag a venture without making business sense).

Microsoft loses money in every division (especially Home Entertainment, where the Xbox is) except OS and Office and yet they continue to make products other than Windows and Office.
So the answer is that they will probably continue to make consoles for several generations until they've managed to kill someone off or they find that their focus on home entertainment isn't as important as it once was.

The innovations I was refering to are stuff like voice communication and online gaming strategies (such as Sports networks and buddy lists). Maybe you don't consider those fancy things to be worthwhile but I see them as necessities of future gaming and MS is the only company who has done an effective job of making a standard for everyone and making sure it is a GOOD standard at that. Standardization is probably the most important thing any one company can do for online gaming and Sony has already screwed up on that (Nintendo hasn't done anything, so it isn't worth wasting a breathe on mentioning them in this).

I actually think the only innovation Nintendo has going for it is the fact that gamers are willing to do some project to bring better multiplayer gaming to the system via an internet connection (Warp Pipe). Since Nintendo itself isn't doing that, though, I find it hard to credit them as trying to innovate for the future.

Call my words a PR-like statement all you like, MS is the only company right now that has a clear picture on what it is doing for the future, and that is a SCARY fact (I may own a Xbox alongside all my Nintendo hardware but I almost detest the fact that Microsoft is doing more for gaming right now than even Nintendo).

  22. Re:Tell that to Nintendo of AMERICA on Japanese Gamers, Retailers, Developers Sum Up 2003 · · Score: 1

The point I was going for is that Japanese sales don't prove much to help out the American faction of Nintendo...so bragging about how sales go over there does little to comfort NOA, who does not have alternative money sources like Microsoft to rely on.

Thus, the Japanese market can do as well as it wants, but NOA needs results here in order to brag. Right now, they don't have it. Sure, sales improved with the price drop, but how much are they actually making per console? :( MS has given in to losing plenty of money already, but can NOA afford it?
