    And sometimes had out warrants when they shouldn't. The lack of bias isn't important, the fact that there's a record is. If an officer has to come and present a reason for a warrant (the reason gets recorded) then there's a record. The warrant and related information is kept in the court record, and can be later reviewed to determine if the search was improper.

    The record keeping is importammt, as is the adversarial nature. Quite honestly, the cops' job should be to do everything they can to stop crime. They shouldn't be thinking any other way. But that means you have to have someone else to weigh the suspect's rights. So you need a judge.

    Cutting NASA funding? No, it's been increasing -- if slowly.

    Not sure your evidence supports that. Compared to the 80s? Yes. Compared to the 90s? No. Also, total funding here would be less relevant than space shuttle funding, which got almost all the pie in the 80s.

    If there is a EULA, and thus a contract, I could see this as s civil matter in most modern legal systems, but criminal? Ridiculous.

    Eat that fucking natural meat and cook it rare. When you are making some hamburger, wad up a ball, add some pepper and salt and eat it. I've done it since I was a kid and never had any ill effects.

    What does she say: a Yankee study revealed that no good data on the relative TCO of Windows and Linux servers was available; the TCO will vary from organisation to organisation; without knowing the TCO, it is hard to make an informed decision.

    What she doesn't say: "We started out to do a pseudo-objective TCO study backed completely by MS. When we saw the results, even I couldn't spin them pro-MS. Therefore, to satisfy our contract deliverable to MS, we wrote some inane crap suggesting that TCO is so highly subjective it doesn't matter what OS you go with."

    Agreed, it was definitely a good deal, but due to the publicity I expect most people went there expecting a far more powerful machine than was available. Until they restricted it to Henrico County residents only, I had planned on going.

    What were people expecting? I mean, they're noy going to be selling off G5s.

    Take this as a warning as to what will happen if MS is able to force software patents into Europe and no longer has to play nice on either side of the Atlantic.

    Last I checked, the iPod is hardware. The problem with patents isn't software, it's the process. Said process is just as easily abused with hardware as software.

    I absolutely agree with you. What the world needs is an open source solution to talking with Exchange for those of us forced to use it. One possiblity may be brutus though it does not appear to be usable yet.

    I have absolutely no idea why anyone would use Outlook unless their company runs Exchange, it's a completely useless atrocity in my opinion.

    As such, what works for the reverse - people who don't (or can't) run Outlook in a company that runs Exchange?

    Here's my situation: We run Exchange Server 5.5, *without* IMAP support. Believe me, I've begged for it, it's not happening.

    I've tried Ximian/Novell's Exchange Connector, but it only works for Exchange 2000/2003. Our server is too old, and they don't plan to upgrade yet.

    Anyone know of anything else that'll work? Right now I'm going in through the Java-riffic Outlook Web Access. I'd almost rather eat glass.

    What GFX cards need to have in future is MOTION BLUR, above all. That is the single reason why the game intro videos look like real movies, while the game gfx still look like... well like game gfx. The lack of image processing circuits in todays gfx cards is the problem that needs to be fixed in future.

    Yeah, another "trick" that shitty programmers can overuse. Similar to image bloom, particle effects, and too much brown (see: Quake I, Deus Ex: IW). Keep your motion blur, thanks.

    That's bullshit and you know it! IE supports stuff like...just fine. The only thing it may not support is your graphic-designer-wanking (i.e., the stupid "tricks" to make it look "pretty" but only actually serve to piss off the actual users of the site).

    Horsehit. Like it or not, no company wants their website to look like it was designed by a chimp in 1996. Modern web sites have lots of images, and unfortunately, Java. A lot of times that craps a page up, but if used well, it also adds functionality.

    Show me a site that only works in IE and I'll show you a site designed by a pretentious, incompetant asshole!

    How about slashdot? It *still* doesn't render correctly in Firefox. Bottom line is if you have a website for something like a bank, you can't write the thing using just markup tags. And if you write it to W3C specs, it won't render correctly in IE. So you have to choose - do it right, or have it work.

    In fact, all results that match a query are returned, it's the ranking that matters. Google is also more rigorous about excluding apparant duplicate results, and don't count those in the stats.

    Yeah, I'd give 'em the CNet treatment. Google effectively gives away billions in free advertising because they'd prefer customer goodwill to having "bought" results. If I were google, I just might de-list companies that sue like that. Want to make sure you don't illegally use their copyright. As far as I can tell, the decision of the "Search King" case gives them that right.

    If you understand how to correctly use html and css then your site should work with all properly written browsers. The parent is bang on the mark.

    The problem is that, thanks to MS, your perfectly designed site won't work properly with the most used browser. Remember - MS does NOT support CSS (or html) correctly to standards. They're not going to even try to pass the acid test.

    You can say that's MS's problem but it isn't - if your site doesn't render correctly for 90% of the population, then for all practical purposes you're wrong. You may be morally/ethically/ideologically right, but users don't care and neither does your employer.

    I guarantee, if you don't support MSIE, and you have a job as a web designer, and you're not working for FSF or someone similar...you'll hear from your boss. If you refuse to support MSIE, you'll get fired.

    Does that suck? Yes. Unfortunately, it's also the real world, and the people paying your bills don't give a shit. Specifically, ideology doesn't make money.

    The problem is that solar panels also aren't very durable. From a consumer perspective, I'd be interested to see how many are used past break-even.

    Long term, single-crystal silicon probably isn't a winner.

    (Yes, I am quite aware of TiDye panels - I was at the first presentation of the technology, developed in Canberra)

    Hate to tell you, they didn't come up with the idea of dye-sensitized TiO2 solar cells.

    You're right, but even the 4-year figure is a long time for energy break-even.

    Current research is looking into other methods using either polycrystalline silicon or nanocrystalline TiO2, the latter being sensitized by dyes that capture visible light. These materials are getting a lot closer to prime time, and being much less energy intensive to make, will have a much shorter energy break-even. Efficiency is significantly lower, though.

    As far as the over-active sense of entitlement, I think that's the parents who can't stomach the idea of driving a station wagon. Hate to tell ya, folks, but most SUVs these days have 8" ground clearance and soft-ass suspensions and probably can't deal well with potholes. You're not fooling anyone, it's as pathetic as a combover. Embrace the inner soccer mom - after you spit out the 7th puppy, that's what you are.
