vinyl records are far from dead. they're just more of a niche market bow. people like me like vinyl for it's warmer sound. a lot more music than you'd suspect is still printed on vinyl. it's often cheaper new, but far more once it's out of print and all over ebay.
at least most of them don't. they make it from touring and merchandise. so if you really want to support an artist, see them on tour, and buy their stuff.

at the borders i was at the other day it was $19.99
they have reasonable prices (about $11-$14 new)
they have a good selection (everything but pop and newer country)
they have a knowledgeable staff
quick special ordering
they carry smaller, independant labels you'll never find at *insert huge chain here*
