I was talking with a young coworker the other day about my experience in the military. I had mentioned I worked on a machine in 1992 that was originally built in 1962. The machine was huge, it was slow, but it did its job well. When the military was ready to move to the upgrade they sold it to a foreign government. I told my coworker that it is likely the other government will use it for 30 more years. He was amazed. The machine he was using to get work done was many times more powerful and many times smaller. He couldn't understand why a computer would be used 30 years let alone 60. I told him because the technology is simple, it almost never breaks and certainly not catastrophically, plus it is easy to fix.
Similarly, we might want to limit ourselves so that we don't fail prematurely, we remain somewhat self healing, and we are simple enough to fix by a doctor and not need both a doctor and an engineer. New optical sensors may be way cool, but my eyeballs probably have a longer operating life.
You probably won't need an implant. Some of the reading devices don't require it, and I imagine there might be a way of "writing" that won't require it also. The biggest problem I see though is the hallucinations people will experience and need to control. Once we have that though, I imagine "facts" will become useless, and people will actually understand that knowing how to apply those facts is more important.
The style of an author has many factors. Mostly it deals with word choice, sentence structure, and information flow. Does the author over use certain words? Does he/she have a large vocabulary? Are the descriptive words long or short? Are the sentences short or rambling? Are the sentences passive or active? How much detail and how long does it take for the author to convey his/her ideas?
In college, I took a linguistic class on stylistics. One of the best courses I ever took, and I wish I had taken it much sooner. I went from a B/C paper writer to an A every time. First, I learned to not write like a mathematician (long sentences with excruciating numbers of quantifying clauses). Then, I learned to mimic my instructors. Few instructors are willing to give themselves less than an A. I'd gather as much of their writings as possible and study the words and sentences to figure out how they wrote.
So now we need stop hydroelectric power until it can be proven safe. We have no idea how much water has been released to contaminate the environment! If we continue to build and operate hydroelectric plants, the world will be doomed. How many more lives need be lost in our unquenchable thirst for power? Hydroelectric power is unsafe and this proves it!
Three comments about your rant: 1) Way too long (didn't read it all). 2) You over used bold!. I'm sure you think the bold bits are important, but relax man. You have an over inflated sense of ego, and that in itself makes this hard to read. 3) *nix isn't for everyone. My gf tried Ubuntu, she didn't "get it", and she isn't going to waste her life trying to learn it to browse the web and type documents. She tried Win7 beta and loved it. She is currently using Vista and doesn't like it, but can't say why. So when it officially releases, she will be back on Win7. It may be bloatware, unsecure, and created by Lucifer himself, but your taking a very zealot like position. It's just an OS man. I myself like OpenBSD, but I'm not going to force anyone else to use it.
I think his list is for movies that haven't come out yet or came out at the same time. G-Force has already come out, and I can tell you (having seen it), that although it is brainlessly entertaining, it will not make Sci-Fi of the year. I can also the Time Traveler's Wife isn't going to make it either. Although the movie contains a "Sci-Fi" element, it isn't really sci-fi. It is however a chick-flick, and I went with my gf.
As for District 9, I'm not sure it will make it either. The story started very slow, and as others mentioned, the shaky came was over done. Even when the film stopped being a "documentary" the camera continued to shake. The interesting story elements were sparse and the rest was just "documentary" style filler or a little bit of action at the end.
Maybe because as the GP said, many of us already assume the cell phone companies are tracking us. So, if many have that assumption, what significant backlash could Palm get? Worst case scenario, they can pull a "think of the children" clause or "public safety" line of bull.
Maybe you are trolling, or maybe I'm reading the posts with a jaundiced eye. Either way, I'm not seeing too many posts favoring the judge here. I think you will find our contempt for patents & particularly patent trolls still trumps our contempt for Microsoft.
I think suing isn't going far enough. I think the person/team behind this and the board of directors should be criminally prosecuted. To fabricate data in pursuit of a few extra dollars while willfully allowing people to die because of the fabrication is wrong on a very fundamental level.
You seem to be getting bent out of shape because of a pointless story on/.. Well, much of/. is pointless and is not news for nerds. But in a way, this article has some points that might be worth discussing even if we don't agree with it in total. I'm not sure that/. is really about news so much as it is about vaguely interesting stuff. This site probably is more about money than it was in the old days, but many of us stick around cause we've grown accustom to the scenery. Back then, I recall most of the articles being tech related. Today, it is a hodge podge of stuff. Generally, the stuff is at least days out of date. The point is to see what others think about it whether they read it last year or today for the first time.
Honestly, if you don't like "our" memes, there's probably a better site out there. If there isn't, it's the web; create one. Maybe ae1294 will be known better than Taco or Cowboy Neal. Even if you don't become more known, that site will be more tailored to your desires and you can decide if it is for money or not.
I think the only thing most Slashdotters would like to see go is the Idle section, but even that has some merit. Now, I expect I will be modded "-1 Feeding the Troll." It doesn't matter, I'm just here cause I've grown to like the scenery.
Win98 SE was a reasonably good OS (from MS). It's easy to use, quick to boot on new hardware, and does everything most home users want. Is it secure? Not really, but most home users don't think about that. I'd guess most home versions of Vista & soon to be Win7 aren't either. If my uncle asked me for Win98, I would install it without much after thought. One of the nice features of the OS was that you could reload it on your box every month, and never have to call MS. So, I'd say I miss Win 98, but I doubt I'll ever miss Vista. I won't miss XP either.
Will you take that in a form of a Pre-paid Visa card? If someone else owed $23 quadrillion, there got to be more bad code to create the opposite error.
Even more than that, he has a sampling error. His sample set is from his work place. Rarely does a single work place represent the culture at large, particularly in IT or small companies.
Now see, I grew up in a time when GPS was a military application only, and those with cell phones toted around a huge case for the battery. If I didn't know where I was, I wandered around until I figured it out. The sun or stars tell me north and south. I'm capable of using US highways and Interstates to determine where in the US I am. Mountains, buildings, and airports can be used as a general landmark in cities. Addresses hint at which side of the road I should find a business or house.
As for the GPS in cell phones, I won't be using one of them either. I don't have a cell phone and don't intend to get one. "What about emergencies" blah blah blah. Well, I'll tell you. Last summer I was traveling down the back road when my tire went out. Because it was my girlfriends truck and I wasn't familiar with it, there was no spare. I started walking towards what I suspected the most likely town to have a tire shop open on a Sunday. Not too long later, I hitched a ride to that town. The tire shop drove me back to the truck and all was well. If it had been a medical emergency, I'm not sure the medics would have gotten there any quicker than we could get to them, and I'd bet there was no cell service where I was at anyway.
So take your GPSes and iPhones and get off my lawn.
I pretty much agree. The old button controller isn't going anywhere soon. Some games are much better with the standard button controller. Some games are much better with a keyboard. The Wii-mote and other devices are just adding to the gaming experience by offering another input device. I don't see any need to be concerned about the death of an input device just because it is the cool thing d'jour.

Maybe in his system 7 is a valid symbol for what you think as 1. Think beyond the spoon Neo.
Yeah, but I think the "cure" is worse than the disease in this case.
If I had any mod points, I'd mod you -1 Flame.

There was a link below that lead me to this: Flame Fusion, also called the Verneuil Process. You might want to look it up to further your research.
Yeah, I thought ALON was our Transparent Aluminum. I'd still like to see the day when they can mass produce it though.

What, you aren't familiar with synesthesia?
Interesting...Why would McCain cosponsor the amendment?
I haven't any mod points today, but having wipe down my monitor and keyboard, I would have moded you +1 Funny.

I thought they didn't want us to use IE.
You can too fix a duck with ducts. Heat the duct as you would a wok, and throw the diced duck in with the vegis.
