  2. Finally Caught On on Strained Silicon Chips From Intel · · Score: 0, Troll

Chip Architect was speculating on this way back when intel's 64 bit extensions were still called Yamhill. They make some interesting observations that lead them to belive the second 32 bit ALU was to allow for 64 bit integer operations in a 2x32 bit format. And not to assist with eliminating resource shortages in HT as some others had suggested.
And even if that does pan out it's highly unlikley to appear in desktop Prescott core chips anytime soon. Seems much more like something you'd find in Xeon MPs and later DPs to eliminate the need for that hack they call PAE.
Though i hardly see how 'somebody told us a seinor exec said' makes Slashdot.' (I understand that's what the Inquirier bases most of their news on, i thought we had slightly higher standards of reliability)

But if there were a G5 PB, I am all for it. That would be birthday present to myself. However, I would have to wait until the second generation of that machine b/c I would like to make sure that Apple just isn't unloading G4 parts with a G5 chip.

Glaskowski has a very good track record when it comes to processors. If you look at this objectively, a 1.6GHz or slower G5 would be an easy fit into the current PowerBook chassis. As has been said many times before, the G5 actually does run cooler and consume less power than the G4 at equal clock speeds. If the 90-nm process is employed, then we're ahead of the game.

When the G5 was introduced last June at the WWDC, it didn't go on sale for another month or two. So the idea of introducing the PB G5 at MacWorld, but not selling it for another month or two is not that hard to imagine.

India is truley a rising nation, it remind s me very much of the United States. Both are very similar countries in some ways, exploited by the british for all their worth, but when the US won its indipendence is grew to become a major world power.

India won indipendence only 55 years ago, and is fast turning into an intelectual and finincial world power. They have a space program, nuclear wepons and huge investment from global companies such as IBM and Dell.

It looks as though American and European jobs are being outsourced there in droves.. I think in another 50 years that India will be beside the US in terms of being a world superpower. In a hundred it will be the most powerful nation in the world.

  8. Properitor: NuClear Records, Lindon, Utah on Digital Music Stores Reviewed · · Score: -1, Troll

As a record store owner, you can't blame me for not welcoming the new competition from all these new online music services. Altough it does impact on my business slighly, it doesn't eat away at my sales as much as some might think. The reason for this is that most of my sales are to young teenagers (12-15) and they usually do not have a credit card, they are the ones who buy Britney and Justin Timberlake albums, which make up most of my sales in a week. Another cash cow for my store is the local bands sections. I have come to an agreement with local bands who want to distribute their cd's which I think is very fair, from each sale they get 25%. This is far more than what a record company would give them, and also far more profitable than a chart CD. They get their friends to buy these CD's in droves and its great for me. I for one am glad p2p has brought the issue of wether we need record stores anymore. I believe we do and it has really been a wake up call for me to get my ass into gear.

Microsoft have had their share of vunerabilities over the last year but not significantly more than linux has, this kind of article always appears on slashdot poking fun at windows security but linux is not much better. Apt-get is not that much better than Windowsupdate.microsoft.com.

I work for a fortune 500 company and we have been considering switching from Windows NT 4 to either Windows Server 2003 or Linux. After much testing we decided to stay on windows for virtually everything except the Primary Domain Controller which scaled much better under Debian.

For file servers we found that samba caused some shares to dissapear occasionally and so we stuck to Windows. For email we needed exchange so we had no choice. For firewall we kept windows because the software we currently use performs much better on windows than Linux.

But as far as security goes we could see on clear advantes of one platform over the other.

  13. This uses ION propulsion technology on Russians Invade with Flying Saucer · · Score: -1, Informative

I spent a lot of time studying this technology while I was working towards my Bachelor's Degree. Okay, let's get some facts straight, for those of you without a degree in Mathematics or Physics:

    1) Ion Propulsion is NOT new technology. The Russians and German's have been experimenting with Ion Propulsion since the early 1950's. NASA is actually a late comer to the game, although the first with a completed ion propulsion engine.

    2) Ion Propulsion do not work in an environment with an atmosphere. An ion engine does not have enough force to lift a sheet of paper more than a few inches.

    3) An Ion Engine is very simple in design. For a simple explanation, an inert gas is ionized and injected into a chamber with an opening on one end. The opening has a magnetized torid ring around it. Using the right hand rule (make a fist, stick your thumb out like you are hitchhiking...your thumb is the direction of the electric current, your fingers are curled in the direction of magnetic field flow) you create an electrical flow around the metal torid ring. The resulting magnetic field 'pulls' the ions through the ring, resulting in propulsion.

    4) The reason for slow inital acceleration is because the force of the ions passing through the ring is very small, but the velocity of the ions is very high. So, since there is no friction or other losses in space, after a period of time the velocity of the ions leaving the ring increases the velocity of the engine. After a matter of days the engine can be travelling at 10-30,000MPH.
