How could this be insightful? I made no remark on profitability. I was talking revenue streams. I said licensed xbox software generates revenue. Sadly this is overshadowed by huge operating losses in that section, so you don't see PROFIT! Not to mentio if you think support and education don't make microsoft money than you have got to be kidding. Where I come from, support is a major revenue stream especially in the enterprise software market, where M$ has made huge inroads in server and developer support. In short: your nuts! :)

From Article: I get the sinking feeling that the Standard Definition mode of new games will simply be a boiled down, interpolated, and narrowed port of the High Definition original version. I just don't see how they are going to be able to negotiate the differences between these two customer types--the technology differences are simply too vast.

Simple. Their plan is to kill SD as a serious impediment to a pc or three in every home. It just might work as Microsoft has plenty of collaborators wanting to push as many HDTVs as possible.

If enough people upgrade to HD, it gets cheaper and eventually becomes a trivial purchase for the casual gamer. Especially when its likely the casual gamer has other reasons to upgrade such as digital cable or satellite. It's certainly a bold move on Microsofts part, but also an obvous one. I just don't see how this muddies the waters as the author implies.

    Did I miss something?

Not exactly the most factually correct article:

Wait..Didnt you just say ATI supplied the chip for Gamecube?

It also mentions that the ps2 does antialiasing on the gpu. Now I may be mistaken- sure it *CAN* but no one actually does this for performance reasons. Its much more efficient to use a VMU or other hardware tricks to perform something like anti-aliasing on the PS2.

For family and friends, I usually propose a mutally agreeable exchange of services and I provide as much support in person and provide information to be used post-visit, much like a doctor. Computer health is a lot like personal health, and the sad fact is many people have no clue where to begin *maintaining* their health let alone their inanimate computer.

It came to pass that I had to modify my User Agreement. If you blatently disregard security information or procedures I have provided you with in the past (ie call me 3 times in one month to fix the same ICS settings) I will begin to charge, and make this clear prior to my next regular visit.

For these people, friends family or enemies, I charge 30$ Cdn / hr at my convenience. If its emergency I charge 40$ / hr ( 1 day SLA)

Maybe I'm a jerk, but I try provide everything (including live instruction) one would need to maintain their system. If you can't be bothered to learn how to use your computer, then I can't be bothered to try to teach. Might as well make it worth my while.

The only hassle I have ever experienced is having to support them because of a mistake I made, and that has only ever happened once.

nhl2k5, Midway Classics 1 & 2, Sonic collections, Katamari Damacy, & Outlaw Golf 2. These are all beloved games.

I have bought loads of software in the last two quarters, and more than I usually would due to the 20$ price point. It's allowed me to take some chances on games, without the risk of massive late fees- weeks later. I'm not a bad customer; I buy many of the hot new releases at the regular price point.

It's twisted really. Just when I thought (after years of getting ripped off by incremental sports updates that I just *had to have*), a company could offer updates to their fine sports franchises for 20$ and win the hearts and minds of gamers everywhere- carrying a torch of affordable games for everyone! I apologize for over-dramatizing, but this truly disappoints me.

I loathe to attack Sega for its decision regarding their own business. I merely submit that they are making a grave mistake. One can only hope that it does not, once again, start a trend within the industry.
