I can definitely agree that the Air Force does treat Airmen as interchangable cogs, but it's based on career field, not just the virtue of being in the Air Force. All people within a career field will have a broad education over most the tasks they'd be presented with. It's on the job that you gain further in-depth knowledge. You will not see a missile loader in a cyber command type of position. There are specific career fields within the Air Force that would fill those positions. As it is right now, there are separate career fields for computer "operators" and "programmers." Soon those two will be transforming slightly with programmers possibly being phased out. There will be a creation of two new career fields directly relating to network attack and defense that will hopefully be filling such positions. These will not be career fields that Joe-High-School-Graduate will be able to get into. They will be "cross-train" only, meaning that you'd have to be in another Air Force (hopefully related) career field for 3 or 5 years (depending on enlistment term). Hopefully this will be used as a way to filter applicants to the career field and find the ones that do have such a background.

I'm the lead on testing Vista at my base for the Air Force. I have to say that I would not give my advice to procede with a full deployment. However, my voice is meaningless as the Air Force has pretty much already decided to go ahead with it and seems to be doing this as a let's-see-what-breaks-and-mitigate. The sad issue is that MS contractors are hired on to key places. We are essentially paying them to sell us their products. I have literally been told by one of these people that something was not a bug but a feature. It's prettier but what does it offer my people? Our testing has fortunately prompted two people I talked to this weekend to buy Apples for their home use.

It seems to be Cisco's business strategy lately to acquire other (smaller) companys so they don't have to plunk down the cash for R&D and so that they can make knee-jerk reactions to market demands. What results is a product not ready for prime time that they have little understanding of and the TAC's are as confused as the sys-admins. Their infrastructure devices seem to do a fairly decent job, but try to find any information on their IDS (formerly NetRanger). End of life for these things is less than a year away and documentation is sparse at best. At least their message boards confirm that others are seeing the same problems and we're not just crazy.

It's typically worms that are scanning you. The reason they originate from places like Korea (most the scans I've seen are actually SOUTH Korea, not North.) and Taiwan is that they don't have the network or system security posture most in the west do. I can tell Austrailia's security isn't as strong as ours as I see some of the same worm looking scans coming from systems there.
