The reason why Hotmail doesn't support POP3, I believe, is that if you can access your account in a mail-client, then you don't see any ads. In comes Hotmail popper
Therefore I think it would be reasonable for Google to expect a small fee in exchange for POP3 access .
I have 2 questions though, 1. do you think it would be possible to write an extension to, say OE and Thunderbird, so that these "relevant ads" would be displayed somewhere in the program window? 2. How long will it take for someone to write a program like hotmail popper so that people can access their Gmail accounts via Thunderbird and other email clients?
How can you get a 0.1% false negative rate when 30% of spam is getting through?
He isn't saying that 30% of spam is getting through.... He is saying that they are blocking 70% of their incoming mail as it is spam. That means that 30% is determined to be real mail.
He isn't saying that his parent poster is wrong... He is making a joke, you just didn't get it, perhaps you are blocking 70% of incoming jokes as spam? That only tells me one thing:
YOU MUST BE NEW HERE!!! Now hand over your uid, it obviously doesn't belong to you;-)
The same conversation, with Eliza on the other end:
Sales Guy: Hi, it looks like you're considering Rackspace for your hosting needs. Can I help you?
Eliza: Do you wish to help me?
Sales Guy: Yes, that's why I'm here, to help you.
Eliza: You are sure?
Sales Guy: No, to help you. To make your shopping experience with Rackspace more enjoyable.
Eliza: You are being a bit negative.
Sales Guy: You wouldn't happen to be a robot of some sort?
Eliza: Oh, i wouldnt happen to be a robot of some sort.
Sales Guy: Alright wise guy, very funny. Now please let me do my job.
Eliza: Why do you say your job? Sales Guy: I have your IP, I will be at your house in about half an hour
Eliza: Can you elaborate on that?
I have my OOo save all files to.doc and.xls by default, just for that reason, nobody wants to receive a document in pdf - what if they want to change it? And rtf? Gimme a break. I've helped a few of my friends to install OOo and I always tell them to change the default fileformat.
Does anybody use the default OpenOffice fileformats? I honestly don't see how that could work.
You're wery wrong mr. Troll, MS did translate Windows into Icelandic, at their own expense (although it was that good-for-nothing Win98 and the Icelandic version came out after the english win2k came out), see my earlier posting in this discussion
And why should they want to support Icelandic? Here are a few facts about Iceland: (1) Everybody in Iceland speaks english, (2) we're a population of 300.000! (3) the government never offered to fund the translation and (4) Microsoft lost A LOT of money on the Icelandic translation, although they can now use it to better localize WindowsXP or Longhorn. It was a raw deal for everybody IMO.
You'd be surprised how far Microsoft is willing to reach to gain goodwill from governments of small countries. I live in Iceland which has a population of a little under 300.000.
Here* you can read about the deal that Microsoft made with the Icelandic government in january 1999. The deal was that MS would translate win98 at their own expense, and in return the government was supposed to bite down on software piracy. The translated OS was, IIRC, completed about a year after Win2k came out (they propably didn't sell more than a few hundred copies) and software piracy in Iceland is still one of the highest in Europe.
*This is the homepage of our former secretary of education, who is now the secretary of justice. It might be a little bit biased, but it was the most detailed article I could find in english. Here's an extract: After several months of negotiations in 1998, I, as Iceland's Minister of Culture, Science and Education, signed an agreement with Microsoft in January 1999 under which Icelandic became recognized as one of that company's languages. We regarded this as an important achievement, and the Windows 98 operating system was duly translated into Icelandic. More Icelandic translations of Microsoft programs are scheduled to appear this autumn.
It was a rather strange experience having to fight for the acceptance of one's language in the realm of this global company. When the agreement was signed, Icelandic became the 31st language recognized by Microsoft.
Of course, the KDE GUI has been available in Icelandic for many years, and this was pointed out to the minister at the time. Sadly, the man is an idiot, and was too proud of this great deal of his to listen to anybody trying to point FOSS out to him.

Unicast is committed to ensuring that all ads either play perfectly or not at all.
At times, we make temporary decisions to exclude certain browser and/or configurations that contain known bugs or perform inconsistently in our testing and quality assurance environments.
Unicast has temporarily blocked the Sun JVM as a result of some modifications made with the most recent Sun releases. Unicast has seen consistent instability with this configuration and will continue to evaluate updates and new releases as they become available.

Statement to the Media Regarding Microsoft Source Code Leak
Mainsoft has been a Microsoft partner since 1994, when we first entered a source code licensing agreement with Microsoft. Mainsoft takes Microsoft's and all our customers' security matters seriously, and we recognize the gravity of the situation.
We are cooperating fully with Microsoft and all authorities in their investigation.
We are unable to issue any further statement or answer questions until we have more information.
From Mike Gullard, Chairman of the Board, Mainsoft Corporation
But still, check out their front-page and count how many times the word Linux appears ^_^
Here's a link to the google cache of methlabs.org, in case it gets slashdotted (but then you wouldn't be able to access PeerGuardian_v1.99_pr14.zip from the server, now would you?:)
Anywhoo, I really fail to see the problem if the amount of spam you see has dropped. Of course there are bandwith issues, but don't you think that with more and more spam being blocked, the spammers revenues will fall? I think we will never completely stop spammers, so the only thing that we can do is stop the spam, which we are doing, and getting better at it all the time.

Actually [IANAL but am studying to become one :], I think article 10 of The European Convention on Human Rights applies better here, the European Court of Human Rights has more power than the UN in these matters.
