I do like that they put things out there. They are too slow to remove the ones that don't work. I do think that they can do a better job of doing the old-school beta approach. I loved Inbox. Having to move back to Gmail in the past couple of months has been frustrating.
Too bad they didn't use science to reach the proper verdict. This is insane.
We have "votes" on climate change, and a "jury of your peers" to decide on medical and biological science.
I want to agree with you. But, I just realized (having just posted a review of one of the books) that Amazon has a policy of taking up to 3 days to review and then allow a review to be shown. So, Amazon's incentive is to have 5 star reviews in order to sell books.
I suppose that I need to rescind my above comment regarding the free market. Amazon will promote this conspiracy crap because it sells books.
I think I need a hot bath and a shot of, well, not shots.
So, why complain? To me, if there is free or cheap content, then get it, read it, and post online reviews.
If you read it and object, then post a negative review and shame them out of the market. Be honest about it. At least read it and post an honest review. That is how the market works. Why is the headline here trying to blame Amazon? To me, this is a great opportunity to let the review/free-market work.
Kenyon College. LOL. A true arbiter of truth and logic. Sheesh. Never before has there been such a bastion of Marxist/Socialist crap. I love how the "elite" send their kids there to get indoctrinated, brainwashed, and tormented.
The point of a university is (should be?) to teach people how to learn. (In addition, of course, to how to hold your liquor, put on a condom, and provide life-long devotion to its sports teams.)
Critical thinking is/should be the core of all institutes of higher education.
Excellent post. Close to the simplest explanation of this complex idea that I have seen.
Here is an article that has some interesting suggestions. It gets a bit in the weeds. But, any fix will need to get a bit convoluted to explain to your average voter.

Exactly. I never have a problem when Don Draper or Pete Campbell take me out. They know all the right places for a quiet conversation, four bottles of Scotch, and a carton or two of cigarettes. It is quiet, but I always end up spending a couple of million buying advertising that I didn't really want.
Stuff like this always reminds me of the punch line to the Monty Python Dennis Moore sketch....
"Wait a tic... blimey, this redistribution of wealth is trickier than I thought."
Law of unintended consequences.

Been there, done that.
The Stoics exactly figured this out 2,000 years ago. Go read Marcus Aurelius or Epictetus or Seneca on procrastination. It is all about emotion. This is not news... to me.
As an early Slashdot adopter and lurker, I like to think that I have at least a tiny bit of say here.
Slashdot editors... This is NOT OK to post this story here. Murder and suicide, just because slightly linked to what, gaming?, is best left to the news, authorities, and families involved.
Not here. This is inappropriate here on Slashdot. Please take the almost unprecedented step and remove this story from the front page.

Emotional? Like scaring little kids (who are too young to have developed rational thought) into skipping school?

Just floss people. And don't FORGET to floss. The more you floss, the less you will forget to floss. See how that works?
At least to Google, Facebook, and Amazon, data is like crack, not happy-happy-sunshine. They are addicted and act just like any other addict.
Google Calendar has the same problem. People can just add appointments/tasks to your calendar. Spammers. I'm at a loss as to how they let this happen.
That is actually a humorous response. Kudos.

At least some truth to that.... https://www.checkbook.org/V2/g...
....to laugh at this story being on Slashdot. And the Big Mac you buy looks like the one you saw on TV? It is advertising, people. Sheesh.

Hal Holbrook was not the REAL bad guy... OJ in the sleep chamber with the kitchen knife!
You make a pretty dang good case for getting rid of public-sector unions as well. Score +1, Yes Please

I'd be much more impressed if these companies/states just did it without having to press-release it all.
And even after they did it, why brag about? We will all just notice how much cooler our globe is and move on.
Middle-aged Video Poker Star Dies, Kills 58 In Bullet-ridden Gun-misfiring Hotel Incident
WTF, Slashdot? Murder-suicide is now just some sort of gaming side-effect that needs to be listed on the label?

Have you SEEN the battery capacity of the Gigafactory?
Didn't we all hire someone here on Slashdot to keep track of all the miracle cancer cures? This may have been in the late 90's.
Number of cancer cures announced in stories on Slashdot >= Number of flying-car-coming-tomorrow stories on Slashdot
Maybe it was me who we hired. I forget. I may have been the one who was supposed to keep track of the Alzheimer cure stories.
