The shiny pseudo-holographic box made it look like the lich was reaching right for you. Plus it was made from heavy stock cardboard and about a half-foot thick. You just don't get boxes like that anymore...
The people I know that play Madden (or any other sports titles) never go to work anyway. They'd just look suspicious about it if they tried to give me an excuse other than "Dude, chill."
I swear, I've seen the entire flash three times now thanks to the repeat airings on the news. Would anybody have gotten their undies in a twist if the animation had been something completely forgettable on Newgrounds.com?
I know it's a Monday and we're all sleepy and would all like to be back in bed right about now but let's keep it together, eh? Pull those heads out of the clouds!
I knew a guy like him in college. He didn't even hear comments that were in any way negative (which included constructive criticism). The best I can figure is that after a person has had their ideas stomped down for so long by teachers, co-workers and reviewers, they just filter out everything that isn't innanely positive and sugarcoated.
Recently, I picked up a tamagotchi-like RPG called Dungeon Quest that's been eating my free time like Skittles. It's a very basic roguelike (randomized maps and items), but it's small enough that I can bring it to work (and easily stuff it into my pocket with the Boss passes by).
Considering how much idle time my job involves, having this has provided me with more than ample entertainment and sanity saving for it's price.
True, I'd love to be able to take my demon summoning on the road... The DemiKids games make an adequate stand-in, but they just don't have the 'oomph' of their darker cousins.
...Considering the old Nintendo's iron fist of PG ratings. Anyone remember the Hero's mother in SMT1? You can bet that scene would have been either cut or censored so hard that any impact that it had would be gone. It still creeps me out to think about it...
Frankly, I'm much happier getting them late but with them being translated by the loving hand of Aeon Genesis.
AI alone isn't the be-all-end-all of offline play, though. I'll remember a game that had an incredible story far longer than a game that has baddies that run for cover slightly more intelligently.
They've tried generic fantasy ganes, generic sci-fi games and completely off-the-wall longshots. Only one of them even remotely pulls it's weight and that's because it's one of the major milestones of the industry. Just save us all a lot of grief and quit hemorrhaging money on MMOs already.
Hell, give up on online play completely. Throw some cash at a few promising single player games! They still exist, after all. All of these project cancellations have really hurt my already shaky opinion of EA -- to the point where I might just make a concious effort to avoid their titles. But if some of the developers under their wing can cook up something really outstanding with their full support (and negligable meddling), it'd go a long way towards turning that opinion around.
I'm sure there's a Madden Online joke in there somewhere...
All that really matters to me is if they make a good game. While it may be true that developers like Wisdom Tree have paved a grand history of mediocrity, that doesn't necessarily mean that all future religious titles are destined to be bombs. I could easily see an RPG system akin to Ultima IV being put to good use. Possibly a comical adventure game about some guy trying to join a church, but is delayed by Wacky Hijinx.
It'd be nice to see people try and keep an open mind about games like these instead of just immediately writing them off with "Oh, a God game. It'll suck."
On many of today's networks, even a simple chess game could hit you for half an hour of airtime--and that's if you manage to make it through without the other player getting fed up and dropping or going into a tunnel and losing reception.
If people are going to be zooming around the highways playing Chess, I hope it never takes off. I already have to deal with enough SUVs swerving around due to someone with a cellphone glued to their ear; I'd hate to see what they drive like while trying to pull off Kasparov's Gambit.
Do the graphics bother anybody else? It's the strangest thing... I keep thinking that they look almost identical to early episodes of Reboot and the prerendered sprites of Might & Magic VI (example). Despite them being fairly cutting edge graphics, my brain keeps telling me "This is so 1998."
I was going to mention that as well. I'd kill to get my Kai on in an Ultima/Gothic style RPG... Such an imaginative series deserves to see some new life breathed into it instead of being relegated to the occasional lucky find in used book shops.
I thought it looked pretty cool, actually. Then again, I'm an absolute fiend for almost anything NES; I'd probably even wear a Power Glove, if it were socially acceptable. It'd match my watch!
No, I'm pretty sure it's the "World Builder's Guidebook" he's talking about. Which really is a pretty darn handy thing to keep on-hand if you need to build a believable kingdom/town/planet every now and again.
There might have been a slight blur over it, but for all I know it could have been my TV. My reception isn't exactly what one would call "quality."
(For reference, this was UPN 20 out of Washington DC.)
Instead of being a bad enough dude to rescue the president, you can be a badder dude, sock ol' Ronnie right in the kisser and go bag a Dragon Ninja hooker. It's edgy that way, you see.
I wonder... What would it be like if IMDB did a poll like this...?
*wavy dream sequence lines*
Tim: "Hey, Bob, would you think Casablanca would be better under Romance or Drama?"
Bob: "Casawhatta? Why're you wasting poll space with that?"
Tim: "It's a good movie, Bob."
Bob: "But it doesn't have any special effects or hot babes."
Tim: "Ingrid Bergman has her charms."
Bob: "But she ain't got DD ya-yas, does she?"
Tim: "...I hate you, Bob."
Bob: "Shut up and get back to work on the Best Evil Dead Movie category."
There's going to be a D&D MMO now? Oi. I can honestly say I long for the days when a new MMORPG was a huge deal that made cover stories in gaming magazines. Now there are so many that I can't go a week without hearing about half a dozen new ones promising to be "Everquest...but BETTER!!"
I highly doubt they'll be getting a license to distribute any Capcom roms anytime soon. So it seems I've got little recourse but to hoist the Jolly Roger when I'm hankerin' for a few levels of Powered Gear, Tenchi wo Kurau II or Alien vs. Predator (the beat-em-up, not the shooter by the same name).
Once they start hosting more titles I have a vested interest in, I'll give them my money.

No kiddin'... You know, you just know somebody has been waiting for a chance to thrown THAT one out there.
Took the words right out of my mouth.

What'll the newbie fodder be? Giant rats, giant bats or giant beetles?
